    I tried shifting my counting so that the beats would fall on 1 & 3, but it kept correcting to 2 & 4, and I think I've never understood music less

      But that’s why groove sounds corny with backbeats snare drum rhythmic pattern , though.

    foot stamp on 1 and 3 (or all f), clap on 2 and 4, if song really fast even if its swing, 1 and 3 helps the band feel more relaxed

      Strangely - clap on the 1 and 3, and it sounds more regimented. Clap on the 2 & 4, and it sounds more free, and you *invite* a little jazz chaos. Which is what we want :)

    I don't think white americans would clap on 1 and 3. I'm not an American myself, but I'd say that music based on African-American rhythm patterns has become so widespread that unless you play classical, you will automatically learn to clap on 2 and 4. In Europe, the situation is quite different, as folk music of many nations uses the 1 and 3 pattern.

    With slower music it's mid beat 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5. Fever - Peggy Lee for e.g. try clapping 2 & 4 to that and you'll sound wrong.

    I assumed clapping on 2 and 4 was a result of the jim crow culture. The white folk clapped on 1 and 3 so the coloured folk had to clap on 2 and 4.

    • @shaspearman8647
      @shaspearman8647 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      This is a different concept. Here we are talking about grooving WITH music. “On the one” and “clapping on the one and two are different things”. Black folks will still dance and groove with the 2 and 4 with James’ music. We are dancing with the music as if the body is an instrument, we’re adding to the music instead of competing with the music, or with the bass, and naturally so.

      @@wildwesley9328 Depends what you're clapping along to. Early jazz, swing, rock'n'roll, gospel, and so many related forms of music want you to clap on the 2 & 4. Give this one a listen - an English audience (I think) - and it just sounds WRONG! th-cam.com/video/7LThOGnemOc/w-d-xo.html

      Imagine a drum kit.
      1 - kick drum & high hat
      2 - snare & high hate
      3 - repeat #1
