    I love the baskets you found. I searched and searched for such a thing when I repotted my Elizabeth Ann Buckleberry this year. What I ended up doing is deconstructing a wood slat planter and removing two rows of wood to make the basket shallower. It worked well although I do feel like I could have gone to an even bigger wood basket as it will likely out grow this one before long. Thank you for your great tutorials. It is a humble person who shows others their mistakes, but it is so important to learn from and motivates us views to keep trying.

    I find my Buckleberry can take a LOT more light than many of my other Bulbs. That has always been great for me in terms of growth and flowering.

    Needs high humidity, needs warm temp, needs more moisture, and it will help if you lay the mount horizontal on the bench. In your place needs daily misting.

    Two nice looking plant Geoff, why not hang the pot/tray with a hanging basket chain you’ll only need three small holes and it will free up bench space. Thanks for sharing.

    I have mem. Karen McDonald, bought from Burnham's, and the centre is in moss but I surrounded that with bark and put it in a holey clay pot. It loves that. I think they do like to be moist but I think they like what you could call a wet/damp cycle, not to be constantly wet.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I guess it all really depends on your conditions. I've killed several Miltoniopsis that 'like to be moist' but I've found that once they get below a certain temperature they don't like to be moist at all! I suppose that's true on many orchids. Fingers crossed this produces some blooms I can actually see!

    • @Rockdoc2174

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 I've killed a few "moisture lovers" by using a water-retentive media that stayed too wet for too long. Neither of my Bulbophyllum has flowered yet but they may not be big enough yet.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55

      Haha welcome to the club! The thing with us Uk dwellers is that it's frequently humid, and if you're growing in a greenhouse, despite the most sterling of efforts, big temperature swings are hard to avoid. I've lost most orchids through a combination of high humidity and temperatures that were too low, along with media more suited to warmer climates. Sounds like I'm not the only one!🤣

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 most of mine are in our conservatory and that gets very hot in summer. It does have radiators, though, so I have some control over overnight lows. I'm having to change how I water some plants because they're staying wet too long. It's now a case of working out how much I should trickle through instead of sloshing it around wholesale.

    Hi Geoff! Love your Brugmansia ? blooms! Absolutely gorgeous! You have many other beautiful blooms there now! My EAB is currently I bloom. I am not sure about the temperatures in winter. My has been below 18 and on occasion below 15 overnight I believe. I was trying to keep it low for some dendrobiums. Maybe even down to 12 degrees. It has still bloomed. Mine also dries out too much. I underwater a lot sadly. My pseudobulbs are often shrivelled. I do grow it in a shallow basket with a finer bark (reptibark for reptiles). I will try to post a video in the next while. I think yours should do well in the basket. At least your blooms won’t be strangled. Have a great week.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aw thanks Beverley! Another reason it hadn't bloomed (up until the 2 I garotted!) could simply be the small size of the plant. It was a division after all. And the 2 strangled blooms do prove the culture was OK - if not ideal. I was gutted to discover them. Still, fingers crossed for the basket trick to work but I guess I'll have another long wait...🤷‍♂️I would love to see yours in full bloom - let me know what I've messed up!😱

      The biggest game-changer for me was keeping it hydrated. Rather than pour water through it, I soak it for a couple of hours and that's kept the p.bulbs looking plump. It's had lots of new growth on it this year but still no blooms, so I'm currently in the process of increasing the light. Fingers crossed!

    I would love to try an elizabeth ann, see f it can grow in my living room with some extra lighting. I keep wanting to try bulbophyllum but they seem a bit intimidating. I fear they are not as great as adapting to lower humidity swings as my nepenthes are.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I've heard from some pretty convincing sources that Neps don't mind low humidity. Bulbo EAB however, really do like to be damp for a lot of the time, and that's probably why mine never bloomed up till last year. I'm trying to water them more this year and the growth really has accelerated - but still waiting for blooms...🤞 I think you should give it a go.

    • @BlaisZeroni
      @BlaisZeroni 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 very interesting! Do you think it is the higher humidity or the wetter root system that does most of the work? I do think I will try one and see if it will enjoy a self watering system with a wick in a pot so the reservoir only needs to be filled once a week or so. Could be a fun test :)

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BlaisZeroni I think the wetter roots is the key but of course higher humidity will keep them wet for longer. I'm terrible at watering mounts or doing stuff that needs daily watering - it's always an issue for those of us who work full-time! I suppose I should look into semi-hydro or wicking methods but I've no time for that at present - due to all the watering - how ironic! 🤣

    • @BlaisZeroni
      @BlaisZeroni 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 haha, that is such a typical problem of having orchids and carnivorous plants I feel XD
      I have a small pot set up with sphagnum, perlite and orchid bark with a wick to see how wet it gets. If all goes well I will test with my nepenthes and if that looks promising I will very likely buy my first bulbophyllum to try it out! It should probably be slightly higher on the bark for them. I’m very excited to test it out, i also have a mounted onchidium that I might try this with.

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 good to know! Sounds like you’re on the right track now. Good luck with blooming now that it’s on the recovery path.
      I need to repot mine tomorrow which I when I. bought a month or so ago had came in one of the seedling/liner type of thin plastic grower “pots” which is 4”. It’s fully in loose packed sphagnum moss only so it stays Moist (perhaps too long) but it seems it’s not doing much and perhaps even declining as one leave is wilting and yellowing (I may cut that leaf off - or remove the whole bulb depending what I uncover when I take it out of the moss and examine the roots and bulbs more closely).
      It has 4 bulbs/leaves so it’s still quite small but I’m going with a wider shallow clear plastic bowl that I added holes all around and on the bottom for air and drainage sort of a homemade round basket ;) .
      Hopefully the repot will go well and I’ll have some new roots and growths this summer - it’s too soon for it to bloom. Probably a year or more away.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tara_27244 Yeah I agree with your assessment. These don't often lose leaves like many other orchids - in fact, I've had mine 4 years and haven't lost a single leaf, so it sounds like something isn't quite right. Hopefully the re-pot will help.

    • @tara_27244
      @tara_27244 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 yeah I cut that oldest bulb completely off. down to 2 bulbs and the newest s growth off the rhizome which I hope will plump and put out some roots if it likes this new potting set up (and minus that old bulb). I did rinse the roots and spray with some hydrogen peroxide to be safe in case there was any bad stuff.
      I can now visually see after I peeled off the dried up sheaths there are actually former dried up flower spikes that were cut back on the 3 older bulbs so it is definitely a division off a mature plant. Perhaps where it was cut prompted the issue with that sick bulb/leaf . I can only guess.
      I’ll monitor it over the next few weeks. But I’m a little concerned as there wasn’t much in terms of good roots. It definitely had enough moisture, so perhaps the light wasn’t enough which now it’s summer here it should get many hours of daylight behind a sheer curtain. I’ll supplement with lights as needed.
      Hope it works out. If not I’ll have to buy another plant as it’s one I do want to have ;)
