I remember the X-Wing came out long before the X-Wing pilot Luke figure did. So we had to use Tatooine Luke until then. The same happened with the Tie Fighter toy. They didn't include the Tie Fighter pilot figure until much later. When the kids in my neighborhood played Star Wars, we used either Darth Vader or the standard Stormtrooper figure as the pilot. Some of the kids I knew who had more spending money than the rest of us bought another stormtrooper figure and spray-painted it gloss black, and used that as their Tie Fighter figure until Kenner produced the official one.
I only ever had a crummy Stormtrooper as my TIE "pilot"...(no real pilot until 1980) As it so happens TIE pilots were kinda just black Stormtroopers...so my 7 year old self painted my first ever Stormtrooper black...using this old goopey crystallized black high gloss paint my Dad had in the shed for God know how many years... Then the actual TIE pilots came out for ESB, and I wanted my Stormtrooper back...so my 10 year old self used a scalpel to scrape the paint off. I was a work in progress I like to think. Anyway...am now restoring my poor flayed Trooper's face and other details with a silicone mould I took from a non-damaged trooper..and I hope to have him repainted, and re-carded soon. AS to MY TIE Fighter?..I thought it looked too wide, and so I removed 2 of the bracing pylons, or whatever they are..the part that fired the wings off....and filled the spring sides with hot glue....I wonder if I will ever get that glue out. Ugh.
That's funny, I "ruined" a lot of my old toys when I was a kid, similar to your stormtrooper situation. Many X-wings with guns purposely broken off because I thought they were annoying. But what else are toys for, if not to let a kid experiment and have a little fun with em? I think that's a beautiful thing. Thanks for the anecdote! And good luck with your poor little Stormtrooper.
Fyi. You don't unscrew the back for the battery compartment. You get a coin to push up the top where the "laser"button is Still have mine... tucked away 😁

That's interesting, the things we did as kids back in the day. I'm lucky I found myself some decent figures for my ships at a comic book store.

If ur needing any help or tips on repairs look TH-cam videos on Toy Polloi he has all kinds videos on toy repairs, he’s the go to person
I do actually watch Toy Polloi's vintage kenner restorations every now and again.
The phrase is, "Go-To-Guy".
"Person" sounds cringe at best...Orwellian Newspeak at worst.
