heard this song a million times ,, but to be honest ,, this for me is the best version yet. Makes every hair on my body stand up,, not a lot of covers do that.
I don't understand the negative comments from Rt fans. I'm one myself (I've seen him live over twenty times solo and with band). I love it almost every time I hear another artist cover one of his songs. The fact is a lot of people who are Rt fans now would never have heard of him if it weren't for these covers.
I've been a Richard Thompson fanatic for nearly 40 years. Played this fully expecting to be repulsed, but I am really pleasantly surprised. Very nice cover of a great song!
They are definitely from Idaho. But the relocated to New Braunfels Texas close to 10 years ago as did most of the Red Dirt musicians from Oklahoma (Cross Canadian, Stoney LaRue, Jason Boland, etc...) BTW, this is a great song and RK does a great version of it. A true tribute to R Thompson
This blew me away! Fantastic! Have to confess, tho, sometimes I've clicked 'thumbs down' on a video, not because the music was bad, but because the video sucked. So if I thumbs down a video, it doesn't mean I'm deaf. In this case, thumbs WAY up all the way!
+Jerrylee Stewart-Gonzalez Because it's a fan favorite that they play at every show they put on. You have to go to their shows to hear it! Makes it more special that way.
A studio version could never do it justice. You have to hear it live, you have to hear the story, and if at all possible, you have to hear it in Idaho, to hear it at its best.
But, of course, Richard Thompson alone with his guitar is the best way to go. But I agree with earlier reviews that it's great to see a younger crowd exposed to this fantastic song. Thumbs WAY up!
By the way, I know a little something about Stanley, ID, since I lived about 30 minutes from there. Stanley has about 300 permanent residents. If you don't know who Casanova Jack was, then you never lived in Stanley.
Great song. By all who attempt it! But f**k that. WOT about a F**KIN VINCENT! Sheer poetry in motorcickle engineerin, nothing but nothing can eclipse one. Oh please god, let me win the lottery :-)
The vocals really give the attitude that's missing from Richard Thompson's original. However, the guitar work isn't as up to par. That might just be because it's a completely different genre.
Just out of curiosity how can you possibly call RK "the Nickelback of country"? Nickelback gets shit for being corporate sell outs. This band isn't even on a major label and I've never heard them on the radio once. Your comparison makes no sense at all.
bout time somebody covers the great songwriter of our time Richard Thompson!! This is a F***ing awesome version to boot. I'm now Reckless Kelly's biggest fan!!
ive always loved the RT version of this song, being a redhead and a biker ive heard it sung a time or two, but i absolutely love this version, fabulous
Thanks to richard thompson for writing this(and many more great songs!)...Thanks to reckless kelly for having the taste to play this song AND namecheck Mr thompson so more people will hear of him...great cover..great band!!
These guys really have a handle on this song. Nothing beats RT's guitar playing but this singer's tone and phrasing are excellent and dare I say it, better than the original.
Now we're talking!! Beautiful intro...you go "Reckless Kelly"! May God bless you and "52 black Vincent black lightings"~~to ride. I love this version....thank you! Sehr Guht!!
I can't believe I'm just now finding these guys! They are awesome! I have a new name to add to the list nexr time someone says there's no good music anymore. Jason Isbell, Shovels & Rope, John Fullbright, Glen Hansard, Imelda May and Reckless Fuckin Kelly!
+Andrew Kling Jason Boland & The Stragglers, Micky & The Motorcars (Micky Braun and Gary Braun are the front members of the Motorcars, brothers of Willy and Cody Braun...the front members of Reckless Kelly), Cody Johnson Band, Eleven Hundred Springs, Bart Crow Band, Wade Bowen, Turnpike Troubadours, Stoney LaRue, Cody Canada & The Departed, The Damn Quails, The Thieving Birds, The Dirty River Boys, Whiskey Myers, Roger Creager, Radney Foster, Robert Earl Keen, Josh Grider
Since I found this version of one of my favorite songs yesterday I think Ive listened to it at least 30 times and every time its put a smile on my face !
I have probably seen them play this song live 50 times. I always try to find the moment when Cody switches from mandolin to fiddle but I never notice. I always get so swept up in the narrative of the song that I miss that second, his transition is so smooth.
Now, THAT'S a great cover of possibly the BEST love song of all time. FINALLY, someone has done Richard Thompsons song justice. Great, great job. Loved it.
who said their version was supposed to be the same? why can't it be that thompson inspired them to make a new version that spoke to them a little better? who said their intent was to compete with the original? how do you know they aren't making a bridge to thompson's slightly less accessible sound? and if you are wrong about all of this, i guess that would make this a pretty damn good version huh?
Nobody does this like RT, but damn these guys truly did the justice. Richard still does it best, but I'm impressed that a younger crowd is now exposed to the genius songwriting of Richard Thompson. Now, go watch a live version of this by Richard Thompson and prepare to be amazed.
I had no idea there were so many versions of this incredible song, another brilliant take on this, love the strat version of the main lick. Richard must be so proud of this song, I bought rumour and sigh when it came out and it's still in my top 5.
Great live version of Richard Thompson Classic! The Braun Bros and band are great, their fans know every lyric to all the songs. Again based in Austin . Texas rules!
(This after giving a thumb's up on this video) Noble effort, but I signature songs are just tough to cover. The only person who should ever play this song is RT. Again, noble effort though. If you've not had the pleasure, check out Richard's original, solo, live, whatever. CRAZY that he sings the tune and plays as he does. Great that Reckless honors RT at the beginning.
I've seen Richard Thompson four times, once with Teddy, and just got tickets last night to see him again at Kent Stage July 24th 2024. I've met him twice and he is phenomenal. This is an EXCELLENT cover! These guys really did a great tribute to this song!
I saw RK for the first time in Columbia, Mo on Friday night and holy shit. I've been a fan for about a year now, but I finally got to see them live and I was just amazed at how good these guys really are. Garth is the best concert I have ever been too, but these guys come in close second and that says a lot.
Negative comments? Interesting. Granted nothing can top the original, but this is an excellent cover, IMO. Performances like this give RT's music great exposure, and RT fans who disparage covers like this are being snobs! Consider Del McCoury's version. (Box Hill becomes Knoxville!) I believe it won a Grammy in bluegrass. A great timeless song like "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" transcends musical styles and cultures.
Just to add a little more to the conversation, check out the Aussie - Jeff Lang's cover. Probably the fastest hands on a guitar I've ever seen. Appeals to some, but not everyone. But he sure handles a guitar. I still prefer R.T.
This is absolutely the best version of this song. It's very respectful of Richard Thompson's version. But please don't diss the Brits. They have have a very vibrant musical scene happening there.
They seem to have neither the technical abilities, nor emotional depth to add anything to the song. The listener could just as well read the lyrics as a moving poem and skip this performance.
Superb....not heard this version before. Great fun! But "...down to THE Box-hill....?". Should be "Down to Boxhill...." Boxhill being a motorcycle meeting place in England. Excellent!
the difference in the two versions McCoury's and R. Kelly's is no secret. Ol' Del has been makin music about 45 years longer. I'm fond of Del's version myself!
Hey HullBloke - I was out of line for me to question his heritage, but I should have made it clear there was no apology for the musical statement. RT is a unique talent....
heard this song a million times ,, but to be honest ,, this for me is the best version yet. Makes every hair on my body stand up,, not a lot of covers do that.

Best version of this I've heard, bar none.
I love this great band, awesome tribute to Richard Thompson here
I've been a Richard Thompson fanatic for nearly 40 years. Played this fully expecting to be repulsed, but I am really pleasantly surprised. Very nice cover of a great song!
What a great version of a spectacular song... think I'll go have a listen to Richards version.
One of the greatest songs ever written. Reckless Kelly does the best version of this outside the author Richard Thompson.
Yes it definitely is one of the finest songs ever written...
Sean Rowe did a damn good cover of it also.
if you can, find the Top Floor Taivers version, it's awesome too.
Del McCoury Band does a really good bluegrass cover, too.
th-cam.com/video/CrGOs1a1lOk/w-d-xo.html I like this one best !!!
A really good cover of a classic song albeit in a different 'wrapping'. Love to see the band should they ever tour the UK
Nice job, this version...a beautiful Richard Thompson lovesong...
That's an excellent version of a classic song!
best version ever.
damn straight, i want this song played at my funeral. one of my goals is to own a 52 vincent, one damn good lookin bike!
Love this live version... thanks shrNHB for all the RK postings!
A true tribute to R Thompson
so glad I found this marvelous cover of marvelous song. Thought no one could outdo RT but they definitly do it justice!!!
This blew me away! Fantastic! Have to confess, tho, sometimes I've clicked 'thumbs down' on a video, not because the music was bad, but because the video sucked. So if I thumbs down a video, it doesn't mean I'm deaf. In this case, thumbs WAY up all the way!
Why is there no studio version of this? this is my favorite version of the song.
same man.. I love the red-dirt-raiseing-hell sound they gave this song
+Jerrylee Stewart-Gonzalez Seriously love it
+Jerrylee Stewart-Gonzalez Because it's a fan favorite that they play at every show they put on. You have to go to their shows to hear it! Makes it more special that way.
A studio version could never do it justice. You have to hear it live, you have to hear the story, and if at all possible, you have to hear it in Idaho, to hear it at its best.
I ripped it from the youtube video so you can at least put it on a CD :P

Yes sir! I like that a lot.... damn good!
Very good cover of 52 VBL!!!!
These guys rock it!!
I just wish it was on an album
Just wish this song was on itunes from RK
As an RT fan, this is an *excellent* version.
it is bro, its on th album with the flaming boot o the cover
Great version of the tune - wonderful! I still like the Del McCourey version better but nothing wrong with this one IT ROCKS!
@fxrider71 Square 4... now there was yet another kick ass motorcycle.
how to build a song.....cooooooooool
But, of course, Richard Thompson alone with his guitar is the best way to go. But I agree with earlier reviews that it's great to see a younger crowd exposed to this fantastic song. Thumbs WAY up!
@muskey1450
cheers,i was told it was a particular area,so,is it a pub,bar,club,or what?
By the way, I know a little something about Stanley, ID, since I lived about 30 minutes from there. Stanley has about 300 permanent residents. If you don't know who Casanova Jack was, then you never lived in Stanley.
is this song on any of their cds?
Box Hill (Knoxville in Del McCourey's version)
Reckless Kelly sounds nothing like Nickleback. Wow thats funny! I saw these guys live in TX at Oktoberfest. They didn't do this song though.
Betcha James Aide was a 1%er....... Bad ass motorcycle.... bad ass way to pass.
Just out of curiosity how can you possibly call RK "the Nickelback of country"?
Nickelback gets shit for being corporate sell outs. This band isn't even on a major label and I've never heard them on the radio once. Your comparison makes no sense at all.
I liked this version so much I bought the CD.And I might add I am definitely not a new country fan.
bout time somebody covers the great songwriter of our time Richard Thompson!! This is a F***ing awesome version to boot. I'm now Reckless Kelly's biggest fan!!
In my opinion- there's nothing in this world that beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl....
What if shes a 300 pound redhead and she busts the suspension of the Vincent?
@@rneoman ok, Tuck. There are limits.
This is my favorite version of my favorite song in the history of time. Thompson's still a beast but this version just rings with me better.
ive always loved the RT version of this song, being a redhead and a biker ive heard it sung a time or two, but i absolutely love this version, fabulous
Nothing like leaving a piece of your soul with someone. I love this version of this song the best.
I love riding, was born in 1952, name is Vincent. My song!
Now we're talking!! Beautiful intro...you go "Reckless Kelly"! May God bless you and "52 black Vincent black lightings"~~to ride. I love this version....thank you! Sehr Guht!!

+Garrett Tacha you forgot Stirgil Simpson and Wheeler Walker Jr
+Garrett Tacha I like sturgill but I don't love him. just got back from seeing J.D. Mcpherson, definitely worth checking out.
+Andrew Kling check out bob log III
+B Bob I'm on the good part of TH-cam TEXAS COUNTRY MUSIC DOREVER
Since I found this version of one of my favorite songs yesterday I think Ive listened to it at least 30 times and every time its put a smile on my face !

that’s awesome haha
He plays fiddle the entire time. At least on this recording he did.
@@jeremypancake so he does! David is picking the mandolin part at the beginning on guitar in this earlier recording. Good eye.
There has never been a better version of this song.
Now, THAT'S a great cover of possibly the BEST love song of all time. FINALLY, someone has done Richard Thompsons song justice. Great, great job. Loved it.
ww
Yes yes I agree
HEAR, HEAR!
Great version of this song. I would have to agree with others who have said the best other than Richard Thompson himself.👍👍
Great cover of a great original. RK is trying to pay tribute to RT's original that they admire. Everyone lighten up.
Nothing like leaving a piece of your soul with someone. I love this version of this song the best.
who said their version was supposed to be the same? why can't it be that thompson inspired them to make a new version that spoke to them a little better? who said their intent was to compete with the original? how do you know they aren't making a bridge to thompson's slightly less accessible sound? and if you are wrong about all of this, i guess that would make this a pretty damn good version huh?
great version, but when Del McCoury does it I cry, like a damn baby
Yes, Dell is quiet talented. Listen to his song, let an ol race horse run ?
Thank bring me tears when I think of my dad
I think Del's version is the best version out there bar none
12/30/2020 @ 1815 hrs &123 twats have given thumbs down... WTAF?

I did not expect to be crying over a song at 10:30 on a Wednesday, but here we are. Damn, but that's good!
Great live version of Richard Thompson Classic! The Braun Bros and band are great, their fans know every lyric to all the songs. Again based in Austin . Texas rules!
But they are from Idaho, which also rules! :)
Muzzy Braun's boys all grown up
Do you guys ever tour over in the UK, would love to see you live?
Best version I had heard. What a great voice he has.
A crackin' version of a Richard Thompson great. Well done RK. An' thanks for postin' this.
Well, nothing matches the power of Sean Rowe's cover - nothing
I like black hair and red leather.
Nice interpretation.

Nope, this is a soft version. Sean Rowe didn’t write it, but his version is the best. It has passion and urgency.
Still listening July 2020
20 people are running out of road.

First time I ever heard this and it's GREAT.
Hands down best version of this song ever performed!!! Reckless Kelly rocks!!
Their DVD with this song and their whole DVD of this tour is my favorite thing to watch... sad they don't have Jimmy Jam anymore
Nowhere near as good as Thompson's guitar on his version. Doesn't do it justice.
If you don't catch yourself tapping your foot this song you don't have a pulse.
Going to see RK at the oldest dance hall in Texas in March or April...can't remember the exact day lol but its on mah calendar
still like thompsons version the best but this is great!!! so much better than that del mcoy version or who ever they are
hey reck, what a great job, the best i have heard. thanks, can i borrow your church key for a moment, thanks
If you haven't seen these guys live, I would highly recommend them!!
i think the loss of the finger picking took a lot away from the song, but all in all not a bad cover
You don't come across a 2006 TH-cam video often these days.
The writer of the song can be seen performing it at
th-cam.com/video/sxSCJpnojuM/w-d-xo.html
Every time I listen to this song it plucks my heart strings right from my cojones, without fail
I listen to it about once or twice a month! Makes a bad day better, Make a good day even better!!
He was runnin' out of road ,he was runnin' out of breath.
I fought with the law since i was 17
And I robbed many men to get my Vincent machine
I would seriously consider robbing people for a 52 Vincent.
Wow!!! Awesome version of my favorite Richard Thompson song... Amazing band!!!
This a really good version of this RT classic. Thanks. 5 stars.
and 3 of my favorite things: motorcycles, redheads, and tastefully done versions of great songs! good job, y'all!
