  • Ojetta Parker Smith was raised in Georgetown, SC by her grandmother while her father served in the Navy. She has lived in the Historic District all her life and has seen roads turn from dirt to paved, electricity installed, television invented, and bridges built to replace boats and ferries. She taught school and was one of the first African American teachers in the integrated Maryville Elementary. Interview made possible through a Smart Investing @ Your Library grant from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation and the American Library Association.

Great story...really enjoy listening to stories from back in the day. This was good💕 makes me miss my great- grandmother who was also born in 1917 ( Lucille B. Smalls of Gilbert Street) I miss her so much, she told us good stories...and many of her childhood. This was a GEM to watch
