Agree, what the Royal Navy did after ww2 was nothing but a disgrace with some of the famous ships. We didn’t even make any money/proper uses out of the scrap. The parts like the name plates and certain furnishings have been passed around like a cheap lady of the night. Unforgivable
The UK was bad financially after WW2 and the "age of the [WW2] museum ship" hasn't arrived yet, at least in the UK, so it's a pity that none of UK's battleships survived. I wonder if, at the time, the royal family couldn't have purchased HMS King George V from the scrapyard using some of their wealth and made it into a museum ship. After all, KGV and her class really were intended to be named after George VI, Elizabeth II's father, being commissioned during his reign. Bertie apparently persuaded the RN to name them after his father instead, even though there was already a previous KGV class.
I'm involed with HMCS Haida, which is a preserved Tribal Class Destroyer of the same vintage as Belfast in Canada, We fire off guns periodically but we're only allowed to use black powder. If we used cordite, the concussion from just one round would break windows in Hamilton Ontario where she's berthed. There's a funny story about the King and Queen firing Haida's guns. Charles pulled the lanyard on his gun and there was a "pop" and a puff of smoke. Camillia pulled ehers and .... KABLAMMO! ... followed by a smile and a glance.
@@abrahamdozer6273 I didn't know about your Ship, wasn't it Tribal Class destroyers that made the life of Bismarck pretty miserable the night before it was sunk. Thank you for looking after that very special ship.
@@daneelolivaw602 I served in our (Canadian) navy in the "next" generation of ships fifty years ago and after Haida had been paid off. Actually, it's most likely the condition charges that are being touched off. Warship round of that size aren't like the rounds for a gun. The powder and shell are nit contained in one easy to load unit.
'Belfast'!... 'Belfast'!!... All the best to the biggest museum naval ship of Europe and to all her crews. The work well-done and excellent service. ❤️ ♍🇵🇱🇬🇧👍
Great, well shot and edited, high quality video, thanks for sharing. I'm standing just to the left of the S1 Bofors (the nearer pale blue one) in the pale hat.
(Bit late, apologies) Feel honored and proud to see our flag flying off her aft mast there with our terrific allies, wonderful hearing those 6in guns making some noise! Cheers from a volunteer at the Buffalo Naval Park, home to the last Cleveland class CL :)
Wonder when was the last time that the HMS Belfast had a dry dock period- to repair any damage over the last 30 years below the wind -water line on her hull.
Imagine thousands of ships firing their guns all at the same time. That’s what D-Day would’ve been like. What you see here is pyrotechnics at work so essentially just harmless fireworks.

Bel-chan is a Town-class light cruiser, last of 10 in the class, sister of HMS Edinburgh, and first ship to be named 'Belfast' in the Royal Navy. 12x 6" main guns in 4 triple-barrel turrets.
@@stewm1267 Ya, those barrels didn't actually last all that long. Reminds me of some small German guns that did one better. They tried tapered barrels which resulted in extremely high penetration out of pretty small rounds, but and equally extremely short barrel life, making the idea impractical.
Canadian here.
Belfast bombarded Juno Beach ahead of our troops landing there and no doubt saved a few of their lives.
Bravo Zulu HMS Belfast!
I’m a HMS Belfast volunteer and I was in the bridge when she fired those pyrotechnics
I hope you had ear protection.😅

As an American, I wish the Brits preserved Warspite for the sheer amount of history, however, HMS Belfast looks very sharp even in the 21st Century.

@@GreyknightSEO For us, we should have made USS Enterprise CV-6 a museum ship. Would have also been good to preserve USS San Diego, CL-53.
Her service record is even more impressive. At least she was spared the scrap heap.
Now imagine HMS Belfast off Gold and Juno Beaches, firing not pyrotechnics, but live naval rounds...

@abrahamdozer6273 so the rumours are true. Camilla gets something in her hand and it goes off!😉 No wonder Charles always fancied her!😂

She is still looking beautiful
Mah girl
What Belfast has let fly are basically blank 6" shells - first time in 80 plus years since last firing shots in anger!
Belfast served in the Korean war, so it's more like 70 years
She’s fired salutes from her main battery both previously and recently.

And there was I thinking the Captain had had a cooked breakfast at London Gateway services!
LOL, if he had, he likely would have used high explosive rounds rather than blanks.....and may have had to adjust slightly for the breeze.

Funny how it got the nuclear, chemical and biological warfare major modernisation then!
Barrels are replaced on a regular basis. Needing new barrels is basically regular maintenance or wear and tear for those ships.
