We should consider ourselves lucky that we get to live to see the earliest Damien Chazelle movies. He will go down as one of the all time bests. Hitchcock, Kubrick, Spielberg, Fincher, Nolan, Chazelle.
First Man being announced just made me have even more consideration for him as a director, if he can translate his talent with music related material into other genres, then he will really become one of the greats.
yeh nerves arent a bad thing it doesnt mean you dont know your worth it just means there is anxiety because there is alot of overwhelming factors at play. i am so tired of reading 'they look nervous' like its a shameful to be nervous. its fucking logical to be nervous.
Sitting next to Gibson and in front of Denzel Washington on the same table with Oliver Stone surely would make nervous for sure. I didn't know who this guy is before this clip and I already forget this dude's name
Irony: He talks about how nervous he gets performing or being in front of a crowd or camera and at the END OF THIS VIDEO, they slap him in front of the camera for promo duty.
I know what you mean, but your actions speak louder than your words and all of these directors will have seen Whiplash. That film stands toe-to-toe with any other in Hollywood.
I was about 12 when I watched 28 Days Later when it came out, and that's when it dawned on me that Filmmaking was a thing... it wasn't just movies, there's an actual craft behind this, and different techniques achieve different psychological affects to a very intense degree.
JJ Keller its the beard , it makes him look like a bear ready to unleash an ass whooping. The beard is for a role. Additionally, it pretty obvious he doesn't do Botox , all the lines and wrinkles of on his face really comes through.
These roundtables are basically they get who they can get. I don't see Snowden or Queen of Katwe factoring much into award season, but maybe they just couldn't get any of the other major contending directors here.
Mel's the master at this table. One of the greatest directors ever. He deserves an Oscar for Hacksaw Ridge. That's how good the film was. Welcome back, Mel.
JonTron Hacksaw Ridge was a portrait of Desmond Doss and a portrait of an era where people were most innocent and less cynical. If you think that, I think you would get bored by films like Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago. All of which are masterpieces of cinema. Hacksaw Ridge was old-school movie-making at its finest.
Rascal Of Joy Please. Comparing Hacksaw Ridge to Doctor Zhivago, Gone with the Wind and Lawrence of Arabia is nothing short of a crock of shit and you know it. Hacksaw Ridge had an abundance of awkward camera work, bland/Lifetime level dialogue, inorganic plotting and milquetoast acting that in no way channeled the movies of old. Hacksaw Ridge was not Allied. Never mind the fact that half of the stuff exhibited in Hacksaw Ridge would never fly past an oldschool MPAA.
JonTron Hacksaw Ridge is comparable in scope and execution to such films, because they put on a show. Hacksaw most definitely did not have an abundance of awkward camera work. The dialogue was not the best, but it had its moments and they were good. The acting, especially from Garfield and Weaving was top notch. There are some shots that are simply beautiful and poetic. Funny, you say that, since many people compared it to old-school film-making.
What did Oliver Stone say? Couldn't get no matter how much I rewind. Did he say, "For hire, would you do anything I produce?" Doesn't make sense, though.
Daniel Lemos Cury He asks "did any of them get produced?" Stone's so impressed with Whiplash that he finds it hard to believe it could be anyone's first script, so he's trying to find out if any of Damien's earlier writing efforts resulted in noteworthy productions or even just got picked up.
1:50 I know someone who pretty much loves everything, haha...I mean...there are some subjects he's less interested in, of course, but they are the minority...only few he would want to partake in, though...
Phobophobia There's no breaking into song and dance but there's still characters playing diegetic music for the sake of driving the narrative. Call it a non-traditional musical.
Mel's the master at this table. One of the greatest directors ever. He deserves an Oscar for Hacksaw Ridge. That's how good the film was. Welcome back, Mel.
Reda Ggl Chazelle and Jenkins are better directors? You do realize Mel reinvented the way battle scenes are shot in medieval films. Apocalypto has been called by Scorsese one of the best films ever. Robert Duvall called it the best film he saw in decades. Jenkins is a good writer, but he's not at Gibson's level. Chazelle is a great writer and a good director, but he's got a long way to go to catch up to Mel and Oliver.
Rascal Of Joy Firstly, Gibson is not a writer. Secondly, Apocalypto is one of the most grossly, historically inaccurate films I've ever seen. Still love it, but it needs to be said. Jenkins has only made one feature, so there really is no need for comparison there. Although, I'd strongly assert that Moonlight and Whiplash are better than any film Mel has ever made. With the exception of Apocalypto. Oliver is a HAAAAAAAAAAAAACK
JonTron Gibson is a writer... He co-wrote the Passion, Apocalypto, and has written screenplays for Lorenzo the Magnificent and other stuff. Let's get something straight. Excellent movie-making has nothing to do with historical accuracy. They are two very different things. Braveheart is historically inaccurate, but it's film-making at its finest. It reinvented the way battle scenes are shot.Jenkins has made two films. Moonlight is his second. His first was Medicine for Melancholy. Moonlight, La La Land and Whiplash are absolutely not better than any film Mel has directed. Go tell that to anybody with knowledge of film and they'll laugh at this statement. Oliver Stone is a hack? A man who has been nominated 11 times at the Oscar and won 3 Oscars, two as a director and one as a writer cannot be a hack. What you gonna tell me next, that La La Land and Moonlight are better films than Platoon, JFK and Born on the Fourth of July? You must be smoking something really strong. Both Jenkins and Chazelle are talented but they have a long way to catch up to both Gibson and Stone, who actually have directed difficult films.
Rascal Of Joy Kidding with the Stone is a hack comment. Well, not entirely. I have found his far more recent works trite. While Mel has certainly made his fair share of contributions to scripts, Gibson has himself asserted that he wouldn't have been able to properly finish those scripts without outside help. Not that this really matters, because I'm not fond of auteur theory, the idea that a director has to do everything for his film to have his/her clear stamp/signature. See: Scorsese, Hitchcock and Bigelow. Chazelle, on the other hand, I was mistaken regarding Jenkins, got his start in the film industry WRITING. He is as much of a writer as he is a director. Gibson is not. That is the distinction I wanted to make. HISTORICAL ACCURACY ABSOLUTELY MATTERS IN FILMS. I am sick and tired of hearing this persistent bullshit that historical accuracy doesn't fucking matter. I don't fucking buy it and I will never fucking buy it. The idea that actually doing extensive research and paying respect to real-life events is a hindrance to filmmaking is absurd. If you want to take liberties and make up bullshit, then make a fictional movie! Don't hide behind the veil of "we cared more about the emotion." You are telling stories about REAL LIFE people. Real stories. Real points in time. And to be inauthentic is a fucking disservice on MANY levels. It's lazy and should be rightly criticized.
We should consider ourselves lucky that we get to live to see the earliest Damien Chazelle movies. He will go down as one of the all time bests. Hitchcock, Kubrick, Spielberg, Fincher, Nolan, Chazelle.
Chance Parker definitely
And what about the all time best and most famous Tarantino?
Nolan? Hahahaa ok film bro
Scorsese?????
Are you seriously putting Chazelle on the same pedestal with Kubrick???
The thing that is so amazing about this guy is that he's barely 30 and he's already written and directed two timeless Hollywood masterpieces.
roloug95 And that were just the 2nd and 3rd movie that are truly his (written&directed).
Jenkins and Chazelle are the biggest talents here, it's so cool to see them interacting
Stone *was* pretty good, but he's def dropped off.
+Vseslav Botkin Mel Gibson is a hell of a director too.
True I think Chazelle, Jenkins and Denis Villeneuve are probably the best of recent years.
Jenkins is a talentless hack
@@lewiscranston881 Denis is a beast, probably my favorite director whose debut feature was in the 21st century onwards
he is one of this generation's greats
not yet. Still needs to finds his unique style; there's so much obvious influence in his work right now.
Got the potential, regardless.
kenneth merced calo his music style is clearly distinct already ... he's going to be the music method-director. At lest from what I can tell.
First Man being announced just made me have even more consideration for him as a director, if he can translate his talent with music related material into other genres, then he will really become one of the greats.
@@kmanet4118 he gave us Whiplash and La la land. Already one of my favorites of this generation.
Mad Max looks like he finally went mad.
Mel has always been mad since mad max
He's so talented .. I want to be like him when I grow up
all the best brother...just go for it
Damien sounds nervous...he could be just shy...or scared Mel Gibson might strangle him hehe
Still can't deny the talent from both Mel and Damien.
Well, he's the youngest and has the lesser experience of the table. He respects these auteurs.
yeh nerves arent a bad thing it doesnt mean you dont know your worth it just means there is anxiety because there is alot of overwhelming factors at play. i am so tired of reading 'they look nervous' like its a shameful to be nervous. its fucking logical to be nervous.

he made whiplash at like 28 plus he wrote it guys a rockstar.
Chazelle will go down as one of the best directors of all time. Can't wait for his future projects!!!
Irony: He talks about how nervous he gets performing or being in front of a crowd or camera and at the END OF THIS VIDEO, they slap him in front of the camera for promo duty.
the fact that he's so young yet many great works he's done, is just mindblowing..
Poor Damien. He's so full of life and all of these other directors look like they are about to crucify his thoughts.
Uhm Oliver Stone basically gave him the biggest compliment for his script on Whiplash ...
Yeah I wrote that comment prematurely...but his experience at the table did seem intimidating until the end.
I know what you mean, but your actions speak louder than your words and all of these directors will have seen Whiplash. That film stands toe-to-toe with any other in Hollywood.
Chazelle has to be the best young filmmaker in Hollywood since Paul Thomas Anderson in the 90s/early 00s or something
Xavier Dolan is better. But of course he is less known because he makes independent movies.
@@dioalfonso I've only seen J'ai tue ma mere and Mommy, they're both fine but if he wasn't in his 20's I don't think he'd have the following he does
So in love with Damien Chazelle right now! La La Land was so beautiful literally something out of a daydream . So here's to the ones that dream !!!!
I would give a kidney to be on that table...some great people there.
I could arrange that for you. E-mail me:onlyonekidney@gmail.com
i.d give both to sit next to Denzel
Cool guy. He has a real nervous energy.
kind of like jesse eisenberg lol
Lol. That's exactly who I was thinking off.

He is one of the best
Mel Gibson has the best beard I've ever seen.
I'm thinking about shaving mine. Can't compete with that greatness.
lol yeah same
bubble king he came form the audition of Beauty and the beast
Man. from writing Grand Piano and Last Exorcism 2 to this!
release the whole damn thing!
There's so much greatness at that table.
He's talking about "The Last Exorcism Part II" when they ask him whether anything got produced
Oliver Stone just sat across from this man and asked him that question.... wow... that dude must be pinching himself
I was about 12 when I watched 28 Days Later when it came out, and that's when it dawned on me that Filmmaking was a thing... it wasn't just movies, there's an actual craft behind this, and different techniques achieve different psychological affects to a very intense degree.
Wow, really suprised and cool to see Mel there! Can't wait for the full version, I hope they will upload it on TH-cam.
What's with the way they're all looking at him? 😂
Mel Gibson is terrifying.
JJ Keller its the beard , it makes him look like a bear ready to unleash an ass whooping. The beard is for a role. Additionally, it pretty obvious he doesn't do Botox , all the lines and wrinkles of on his face really comes through.
The beard is for a role he's playing in a movie with sean penn.
Pram De Rooy what movie?!?
Mr mysterious Professor and the Madman
He isn't terrifying, I don't even get the comment or why it has any likes at all. So an older man with a beard is scary? You are ridiculous.
Scorsese, Tom Ford & Denis Villeneuve missing
Tom Ford is in the screenwriters roundtable
I like this lineup, and I like this moderator. Keep 'em coming.
Two moderators; didn't see that. Oh, well. Still should be a good roundtable.
What a cool cat; articulate and intentional.
Am I the only one who thinks that Damien Chazelle is hot?
Jocelyn López he looks like Hitler's so yeah I agree
Jocelyn López he's super cute
Jocelyn López yes
I think he's so cute!
I do. His shyness is something I find cute
La La Land was amazing
3:49 mel does some strange beard ritual 😆

Damien looks like a character from Dr Seus
He needs to win Best Director!
Mel Gibson's beard is marvelous!

Legend in the making
Why isn't Denis Villeneuve here?
Hannah The Amateur or Scorsese
These roundtables are basically they get who they can get. I don't see Snowden or Queen of Katwe factoring much into award season, but maybe they just couldn't get any of the other major contending directors here.
honestly, i mean i respect Oliver Stone, but put Dennis V. in his place instead...
Villeneuve was probably busy shooting Blade Runner
Denis is in Hamburg shooting Blade Runner!
Damien = Genius

Been a fan of Mel Gibson ever since I saw Apocalypto. The man can direct!!!
And I haven't seen Glory yet, so thanks a lot Damiel Chazelle :///

"What the fuck is this shit?"
Damien made it
this is great. when will we see the other clips from this roundtable?
Scorsese and Tom Ford had their spot taken, it would've been Greater and Freshier together.
Raul Gama I agree
Raul Gama Denis Villeneuve too
Jack Parker Totally!!!

Mel Gibson and Oliver Stone on the same table? WOWW
Him and Timothee Chalamet seem very similar to me.
Mel and den look so intimidating i can see why he was nervous
When do full episodes start being uploaded?
dang he's really cute
Mel @3:49. "Sure, kiddo you can direct a movie but can you grow a beard n do this?"
where's the other directors video?
saw him on a chat show
2 hyper
made me fear la la land....
Oliver Stone is the boss
Needs Denis Villeneuve, Kenneth Lonergan, Martin Scorsese, and Tom Ford.
Is it just me or does Damien look a LOT like young Stanley Kubrick
sans the beard?
definitely just you.
Chazelle should play Kubrick in movie about Neil Armstrong by him.
Meh I kinda see what you mean
Can someone explain me about the last Stone's question involving "production"? Thanks!!
Damien wrote other scripts before "Whiplash". Oliver Stone asked him if it was the first script that was produced
Which one directed Sharknado 5?
what was the last question by Oliver Stone?
Is the British guy moderating EVERY single roundtable this year?
despite he start to make good films again but Mel Gibson can't get that love and respect again he had back in the days
What does Oliver Stone ask to which Damien replies, "Yeah" and everyone laughs
what does Oliver ask Demien at the end?
What does Oliver Stone say at 4:18?
he's asking if any of the scripts he wrote for hire got produced
What did Oliver Stone say? Couldn't get no matter how much I rewind. Did he say, "For hire, would you do anything I produce?" Doesn't make sense, though.

Thanks. That was a very good question that I would deflect myself if asked.
Can someone tell me where to see the full vids. Why is THR teasing us like that??? #cruel
Oliver Stone and Mel Gibson at the same roundtable?
yeah, you are right. Fuck the others.
Damien and Xavier Dolan are too young to make movies that r this good
I'm not a native English speaker, so, what does Oliver Stone ask in 4:19? "For hire,..... produced?"
Daniel Lemos Cury He asks "did any of them get produced?" Stone's so impressed with Whiplash that he finds it hard to believe it could be anyone's first script, so he's trying to find out if any of Damien's earlier writing efforts resulted in noteworthy productions or even just got picked up.
thanks!
I wanna be him....
1:50 I know someone who pretty much loves everything, haha...I mean...there are some subjects he's less interested in, of course, but they are the minority...only few he would want to partake in, though...
no tom ford???
that was a MAJOR SPOILER!!!!!
If studios buy your script do you have to sign a nda? Why else wouldn't he say which scripts were produced?
Because they are probably bad horror movies, and doesn't want to reveal that.
Mel's beard tho.
WHERE THE FUCK IS MARTIN SCORSESE?
Where's Ben Affleck tho
I absolutely loved Whiplash not so sure he chose to do a musical 😒
Whiplash is a musical.
I'm assuming based on your reaction that you havent seen La La Land yet.
bobunitone no it isn't. Wtf did you watch lol..?
Phobophobia There's no breaking into song and dance but there's still characters playing diegetic music for the sake of driving the narrative. Call it a non-traditional musical.
yeah I agree the movie didn't have that much singing or even that much dance numbers
Queen of Katwe wasn't that really good...
Is Damien a Jew? Cos Mel looks pissed off at him.
Praise from Oliver Stone to Damien! Haha TRUMP2016
