La La Land discussion with writer/director Damien Chazelle, composer Justin Hurwitz, editor Tom Cross, and actors Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling on December 10, 2016 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
This movie is so magical. Even after 2 weeks of seeing it, I can't stop thinking about it or listening to the soundtrack. Chazelle and Hurwitz are amazing. And Ryan and Emma's chemistry is lovely.
I have seen Hacksaw Ridge and I absolutely love it, but I think La La Land should get Best Picture, it's an amazing experience (coming from someone who isn't actually really fond of musicals). I also think Damien Chazelle should get the Best Director award, his work on the film was almost perfect.
Despite all the widespread critical acclaim Damien has received for this masterpiece, he still manages to seem incredibly humble and modest. So articulate, so soft-spoken and so endearing. Amazing. Love you man
Charles Heiston yeah, the thing is the Academy sometimes wanted to 'share' the award. Since LOTR I guess Oscar didn't have big winner anymore. So yeah I guess we'll see
Amen bro! I watched this in theatres three times and I was the only single dude in all three screenings, but I didn't care. It was that fucking good!!!
I am obsessed with this film. I've seen it three times at the cinema so far. I cannot find a single flaw here - they had better rake in loads of Oscars!
I saw it 3 times too! People think I'm crazy but it's really that good! I still want to see it again but I'll just wait for the blue ray to come out at this point.
Ishan Rosha Oh really. You have really bad taste. Please explain how we are supposed to believe that she pulls over for dinner downtown and then just happens to walk right into a club which just so happens to be the club now owned by her former lover. Of all the thousands of places in Los Angeles, she and her husband just HAPPEN to waltz into this guy's club, without her ever suspecting a thing. The worst contrived bullshit coincidence in decades. Horrible film.
darren motise dude why do we need to see films if they're just as realistic as our everyday life? Even documentaries have a certain degree of modification away, no matter how slight it is, from the "reality".
fadedflage how is it not believable? Music & fantasy aside, the love story between Mia & Sebastian is entirely relatable on every level. It's a harsh slap in the face of reality. Love doesn't always work out.
Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight, The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, Mad Max are some of the movies that also came out this century. Just think about your comment now...
Incredible film. Chazelle and Hurwitz have got to win the Oscar for this. Lovely and original, a nice nod of the head to old Hollywood. And as someone who loves films from the 50s (and jazz music!) I'm so glad this has started to make a comeback
La la land will definitely win Best Picture this year! It is well-deserved to have 14 Oscars nominations. It is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen & it's truly a masterpiece.
Did you know, if Damien Chazelle (32 years, 38 days at this year Oscar) win. He will be the youngest winner for best director? If he win, he will beat Norman Taurog (32 years, 260 days at the time he win) 84 years, 3 months records. And if Barry Jenkins win he will be the first African American winner. What a historic night it would be
Praisdelo Talumingan I hope Damien wins, this film felt like quite the passion project, the amount of effort behind can truly be seen throughout the whole film, so many variables executed with the finest detail, what a great director.
I left the theater dancing too! Grabbed my top hat pop corn box, tap danced down the steps, grabbed an old guys hand...we twirled...he dipped me...we parted ways to the bathrooms! A glorious movie going experience. Thank you to everyone involved. Brilliant🎉
Honestly after watching this interview it seems Hollywood film making is so exciting and amazing experience !!! Hope La La Land wins big in the Oscars !!!
I love this movie. Highly charming, entertaining with an emotionally engaging story and lead characters. Excellent in a great many respect. A love letter to Hollywood, to Los Angeles, to classic musicals.
Having seen Moonlight, Mancestor by the Sea, Arrival, Hell or High Water and Hacksaw Ridge... La La Land is still my favorite of the group. I really hope this wins best picture.
Loved this interview! I learned a lot and specially you realize how little details really make the difference in a movie. LA LA LAND has become my favorite movie, everything is perfect! I love the music, the story, the actors, the crew; literally everything
Yeah, you're right, but the funny thing is that all of them seemed to look at Ryan lol. And honestly I didn't get exactly the meaning of the question (english is not my first language), so your argument makes sense.
Great discussion from the cast & brains behind this film. The idea of how to establish their "universe" is intriguing. In the film Enchanted (with Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey) one of its delights is the idea of that universe. We are told all the characters sing in the animated world, so when Giselle crosses over, she loses this ability when she gets closer to the human Robert in our world. The film even makes fun of that idea, it was very well done. It all helps to get the ideas across to the audience - thank you LaLaLand :)
An idiot whose first film received critical acclaim and won few Oscars and second film which received the highest number of Oscar nominations. Yeah, he's an idiot, for sure
Vi o filme hoje e adorei! Sonhar e perseguir sonhos faz parte da vida. Chorei, ri e fiquei feliz mas triste por um amor que ficou distante...parabéns e obrigada por recriarem algo que nos fala da parte boa da vida.
it was filmed like the old musicals were in cinemascope and in one take most of the numbers and scenes, like the number at the top of them dancing, was shot in magic hour so it's all real not weird editing there, they shot 5 times in 45 minutes during two nights at the same hour and the second one of the second night was the one they used...they are lots of interviews where they go detail with all this stuff...
This is the Academy Theater in Beverly Hills -- one of the best venues in the world for film, and they are in front of a group of their peers, nominated for best picture of 2016. To put an analogy to it: If you were a Catholic, that's like going before the Pope at the Vatican to be considered for sainthood. It's a charged room and most people in their are excited.
JSN True, I was expecting it to be entertaining like old Hollywood but it's no where close. I had to watch some Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly after, to feel better.
You all talking about the "Old Hollywood" but just remember... Jazz is about the future. Cinema is evolving as we all should do too. It's imposible to get the old hollywood, so our only choice it's to praise the past by seeing this kind of films, were the past has our time's beautiful characteristics. La La Land it's a gorgeous film.

I know it is kinda off topic but does anyone know a good website to stream newly released series online?
@Bruce Eugene i use flixzone. You can find it on google =)
@Keaton Nixon Definitely, I've been using FlixZone for months myself :)
@Keaton Nixon thanks, signed up and it seems to work =) Appreciate it!!
@Bruce Eugene Happy to help :)

Jonah Williams It's just amaaazing
I agree
I have seen Hacksaw Ridge and I absolutely love it, but I think La La Land should get Best Picture, it's an amazing experience (coming from someone who isn't actually really fond of musicals). I also think Damien Chazelle should get the Best Director award, his work on the film was almost perfect.
Sairi Ss Exactly man
Jonah Williams it did.. er then it didn't...
Despite all the widespread critical acclaim Damien has received for this masterpiece, he still manages to seem incredibly humble and modest. So articulate, so soft-spoken and so endearing. Amazing. Love you man
That's how you stay on top of your game
This movie should win at least 10 Oscars, I hope...
Charles Heiston yeah, the thing is the Academy sometimes wanted to 'share' the award. Since LOTR I guess Oscar didn't have big winner anymore. So yeah I guess we'll see
Well, there were 6
I walked out the movie fighting the urge to tap dance afterwards
Chandasouk story of my life
You always have to fight the urge to dance? Must be tiring lol
Chandasouk I did tap dance my way out of the theater while singing Someone in the Crowd..
Countrycowboy08 I danced while singing A lovely night
Chandasouk me too!
I absolutely love the movie! Just what we need in these troublesome times!
Amen bro! I watched this in theatres three times and I was the only single dude in all three screenings, but I didn't care. It was that fucking good!!!
what does "troublesome" refer to
LOL same
As if you don't know..
How funny it is to read this now
The whole audience is just looking at Ryan and Emma the whole time. I know it.
I had to stop after the sixth time because I'm broke, haha.
7
Loved this movie! Up there with Moonlight as the best of the 2016! That epilogue scene is honestly one of the greatest scenes ever!
Ishan Rosha that will always be my favorite scene .. at first it was the opener . Lol
Hahaha its literature, its a fantasy. It is not believable.
darren motise dude why do we need to see films if they're just as realistic as our everyday life? Even documentaries have a certain degree of modification away, no matter how slight it is, from the "reality".
fadedflage how is it not believable? Music & fantasy aside, the love story between Mia & Sebastian is entirely relatable on every level. It's a harsh slap in the face of reality. Love doesn't always work out.
I love Ryan so much
In the year 2050, they should do an Oscars for all the films that came out in the century so far, and give La La Land most of the awards.
no.
Jake G 2187 Oh please. Just stop. Idiot.
Come back even one year later and look back at this comment. It was good, not perfect
Agreed and Bergman is a boss.
Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight, The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, Mad Max are some of the movies that also came out this century. Just think about your comment now...
My favorite movie! Thank you, Damien!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Incredible film. Chazelle and Hurwitz have got to win the Oscar for this. Lovely and original, a nice nod of the head to old Hollywood. And as someone who loves films from the 50s (and jazz music!) I'm so glad this has started to make a comeback
I've been in love with this movie since I first saw it, Damien, Emma, Ryan and the entire team is AMAZING
La La Land was more than just a great movie, it was a masterpiece
La la land will definitely win Best Picture this year! It is well-deserved to have 14 Oscars nominations. It is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen & it's truly a masterpiece.
Just La La Land 14 Oscars already, it's totally amazing movie.
Did you know, if Damien Chazelle (32 years, 38 days at this year Oscar) win. He will be the youngest winner for best director? If he win, he will beat Norman Taurog (32 years, 260 days at the time he win) 84 years, 3 months records.

I love how smart Emma is and how she’s totally into the movies that she makes.
Best movie.
I left the theater dancing too! Grabbed my top hat pop corn box, tap danced down the steps, grabbed an old guys hand...we twirled...he dipped me...we parted ways to the bathrooms! A glorious movie going experience. Thank you to everyone involved. Brilliant🎉

La La Land is one of few movies I keep repeating to watch because it is indeed a definition of magnificent work of art
What a year it was for cinema!
emma stone made a very pertinent remark about the editing
Loved this interview! I learned a lot and specially you realize how little details really make the difference in a movie. LA LA LAND has become my favorite movie, everything is perfect! I love the music, the story, the actors, the crew; literally everything
absolutely obsessed
5:49 That moment when nobody wants to answer...
Patrick Roncoski that part made my day
Patrick Roncoski, he asked about the feeling between actors/director so they didn't know 'cos 3 coulda answered.
Yeah, you're right, but the funny thing is that all of them seemed to look at Ryan lol. And honestly I didn't get exactly the meaning of the question (english is not my first language), so your argument makes sense.
I speak English and the question didn't even make sense to me
+Camren Camren same here
Interviewer: *long ass question
Me: .......I'm sorry whaaa?

Still waiting for Arrival's conversation.
THE BEST!!!
LA LA LAND is the best picture in my life.
I Love All Of This Movie
My favorite movie! So beautiful! :'-)
hahahahahaha that last "thank you" from Emma was so weird lmao
My favorite movie of 2016!!
I realy hoped that something as beaustiful as La La Land will happen to cinematography in my age.
Damien Chazelle is such a dork, he reminds of Jesse Eisenberg.
Maxblind20 He's a genius!
Maxblind20 No he isn't. He's more of idiot.
darren motise An idiot who went to Harvard.
An idiot whose first film received critical acclaim and won few Oscars and second film which received the highest number of Oscar nominations. Yeah, he's an idiot, for sure
Pleasant enough but should win an award for the most over-hyped film of 2016.
pppatty i disagree but you're entitled to your own opinion
Soy el unico que le presta increible atención a Tom Cross?
Great. Big. Smile. Forever!
LOLOL that leg crossing at the beginning was in sync XD
Vi o filme hoje e adorei! Sonhar e perseguir sonhos faz parte da vida. Chorei, ri e fiquei feliz mas triste por um amor que ficou distante...parabéns e obrigada por recriarem algo que nos fala da parte boa da vida.
damien is the goat bro
My favorite movie❤❤❤
Wish they talked about the La La land mistake were they got mistaken. And ryan gosling laugh his head off.
is there a full version to this? I'm overanalyzing the hell out of the colors they used in the film and I need answers from Damien!! going crazy

5:49 - What is this question? I'm brazilian, I understand writing only
i luv
I guess we have a new rival for the The Lord of the Rings.
I'll take this... xDHahahahaha... #Venezuela
Is there anymore interviews like this coming for people to attend ?
I think if I hadn't read the comments of videos like this, I would've enjoyed the movie a lot more. Was too overhyped and didn't meet my expectations
Райан Гослинг, какой же он горячий, боже, что с ним?
Monolithic film! Well done you!
the guy in the far left, is that David Lindhagen?
The interviewer is way too, shall we say, overexcited?
Luke Koebele I would be too if I was in front of all these awesome people
This is the Academy Theater in Beverly Hills -- one of the best venues in the world for film, and they are in front of a group of their peers, nominated for best picture of 2016. To put an analogy to it: If you were a Catholic, that's like going before the Pope at the Vatican to be considered for sainthood. It's a charged room and most people in their are excited.
Kevin Rubio funny, I never heard of it, and I lived in LA many years.
Kevin Rubio Your analogy is absurd. And false.
Have you ever screened a film at the Academy? I have. And I'm a former Catholic who has met the Pope (John Paul II) so... I beg to differ.
This movie is magical. The interviewer is not sympathetic at all.
Mi pregunta es¿Qué es primero, la música y luego el montaje o bien la actuación sobre la música?
Omg it was such a bore and overrated
Mood&Music&Lyrics Can't satisfy everybody.
JSN True, I was expecting it to be entertaining like old Hollywood but it's no where close. I had to watch some Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly after, to feel better.
Mood&Music&Lyrics lalaland is the closest thing u can get from the old Hollywood, maybe u should take the time machine, and go back to the old hollywood
Li Terence please get me a time machine, this is the best time to have one.
You all talking about the "Old Hollywood" but just remember... Jazz is about the future.
Cinema is evolving as we all should do too. It's imposible to get the old hollywood, so our only choice it's to praise the past by seeing this kind of films, were the past has our time's beautiful characteristics.
