surprised him didn't mention the bassline on Daffodils. One of the inventive bass techniques i've ever seen and it's an phenomenal line throughout the track. Has to be seen live to appreciate
I think Albert Road is my song of the year. Though you'd probably only get the most out of the lyrics if you're familiar with the experience of growing up in a Northern English market town.
i found this band a couple months ago in the leadup to this album and thought the collection of singles was an EP and that that was all we were gonna get from them. so glad this album came out because it's really good and adds to my evergrowing collection of uk indie bands i can't get enough of. bcnr, divorce, and yard act being some other of my faves currently.
Strongly recommend this album. Listened to it on release on a whim, everything except The Best Tears of Your Life was good to great, Not Everybody Gets to Go to Space and R&B omega slap.
Had the pleasure of seeing them live a few months back, beyond excellent, they are going to do something special one day. However, the album is just a bit too mid-tempo to really live up to the hype. However, there’s so much potential on show here I can’t help be excited for whatever comes next. The World’s Biggest Paving Slab goes so, so hard.
If English Teacher titled this album …… uh um uh um uh hold on let me think um uh wait uhhhhhhhh……… “To Pimp A Classroom”, you would have given an album an 11 out of 10.
I actually think this album IS mind blowing. No weak spots for me. Great lyrics also. Contender for Album of the Year, for me. Perfect album closer also.
This might be the first time I’ve agreed with any of your takes, some real misses on this album but the tracks they get right are really incredible and im looking forward to seeing what they do next (and seeing them in a couple weeks!)
It's actually funny because I really love all the songs that you had gripes with, and I play the second half a lot more often However, this is also one of my fav releases this year, so I generally don't have a problem with anything here
Highly recommend listening to "Sprints - Letter to Self". I know there's no shortage of punk/indie bands this year, which is no bad thing, but they really are very good. I think they stand out from the ever growing crowd.
Anthony, I was thinking right, you ever plan to make an actual review of that one kid cudi album you skipped? Specifically “Satellite Flight: The Journey to Mother Moon” You have rarely ever talked about it and I really wish to see what your thoughts on it are
Sometimes, like on World's Biggest, there's something about the engineering that leads to the guitars and sounds in general on this record lacking an edge and blending together into a nondescript jumble of noise, not nearly as pleasant as shoegaze records like the recent feeble little horse album, but still hard and I'll admit this is still a great record and I enjoyed it most of the time. It's sometimes giving BC,NR, like Broken Biscuits could've flat out been on Live at Bush Hall between the instrumental movements and the vocal switches from singing to deadpan. But their range to also pull off something more aggressive seemed good too. They're clearly very capable and I look forward to more, the engineering was just a huge snag that held back this record's best songs for me.
Speaking of being late to the party with excellent English indie albums that came out this year (😉)…..would love to see you review Nadine Shah’s “Filthy Underneath”? ☺️ For my money one of the best albums of the year so far, and from what I can see it’s being criminally slept on. Have a listen and tell the people, Anthony! :)
Interestingly I’ve always felt “You Blister my Paint” to be the song that could’ve ended the album. In the first few plays I would get caught off guard when the album continued playing.
Not an Indy fan but this is one of the more interesting new records l have heard for some time. Like anything good, they sound a bit like ( fill in the blank) but not so. Stand out from the Mercury nominations and deserved winners
Amazing album. I think the band will grow over the years, and this album will gain further praise when it's reviewed retrospectively based on their journey.
Can you review Fabiana Palladino's debut album "Fabiana Palladino" ? An absolute marvel of an album. I'd like your take on that album. Album also co-produced by Jai Paul.
I've listened to this album a few times now and, yep, this is a pretty fair review, although I believe I like it more than Anthony. As a sidenote, however, I really don't like the album art. It reminds me of something dada/surrealist Max Ernst might've done, which is what I think they were going for, but not nearly as good.
Really good band. I don't know when I hear Lily Fontaine sing I can't help but think of Adele, ha. Yeah that might be crazy and nothing wrong with Adele but (to me) they both have this kind of musical theatricality to their vocal performances. This is to say there is an acting kind of thing going on. Maybe every singer acts, they probably do but with great singers you don't feel it.
So glad Cal graduated from the Tortured Poets Department and became Anthony’s English teacher 🥰

That’s a fair score but Albert Road is a fantastic closer and I hope melon realizes this soon.
I think Albert Road is my song of the year. Though you'd probably only get the most out of the lyrics if you're familiar with the experience of growing up in a Northern English market town.
absolutely loved this album. They had me hooked with the other version of R&B and then Albert Road
i prefer the previous version over the album version

Gotta say, wearing a Mac Miller’s Faces mixtape sweater was a pretty bold move, Melon.
Your thumbnail game has been on point!
Yes anthony you deserve an A for letting Cal chuchesta appear in every video
They were announced as the opener for Idles in Boston this September so I've been checking this album out, I enjoy it and will take some time to grow.

I agree with Blister my Paint and Sideboob being a bit slow, but Albert Road is my favorite song of the album. Also, some love for Broken Biscuits❤

I can see Anthony giving it either a 9 or a 5. I really hope he reviews it eventually.
In the chorus of "The World's Biggest Paving Slab" I can't un-hear the similarity with Desperate Journalist's "Be Kind".
