Y'a rien à faire !
This piece has never been one of my favorites. With that being said, I have now changed my mind. Emmanuel brought to life a piece that I thought was drab & boring. This is how a variations piece should be played. Loved all his "moods".
A lovely performance by one of the greatest Romantic Era composers who ever lived. His early death certainly deprived the world of Romantic music of what would have been hundreds of gorgeous compositions. Letizia, thanks for this lovely upload. It's hard to believe that there aren't more positive comments here. Out of what right now are 113,028 views, somebody else should have written something.
One of my most favorite pieces. And as a flutist, I greatly admire the talent of Pahud. I played this for my senior recital. Not as grand as him, of course, but I love it.
I performed this piece for my sophomore jury, then general recital. Saw this beautiful person in concert some years ago. God I wish I still played. I definitely need to get another flute. 😢❤❤❤
Played this for jury my sophomore year in college. Not an easy piece by any means, but what a feeling of accomplishment to have mastered it. BRILLIANT Emmanuel. Hope you come back to Boston.
Super. Damn they are good! I played that my senior year as a piano major and it proved so difficult that it was necessary to delay the graduation recital till the year after.
I'm able to play this piece at a masterclass. So excited! Pahud's a great inspiration! (Although this is the fastest version of variation 5 I've ever heard. 😂)
Thank you very much for the clarification, I must say rather diplomatic, what I wanted to emphasize was that in this version, I would greatly appreciate the technical skill of the performers and much less the ability to understand the emotional and musical sense of the passage, what fortunately in other executions, also present on you tube, it captures more. Thank you, hello
Bravura controls the deep lyric expression of the theme and the first variation . such a pity . shouldn't the tempo and performance grow g r a d u a l l y along the variations ? at any rate , I will keep the poetic representation at the beginning performed convincingly by the flutist .
can anyone explain to me why he plays twice the 21st bar on the 2nd variation? the pdfs i found online (both on imslp and elsewhere) show mi - sol# - mi - do# to be played only once... no that i don't like it of course, but why would lesage and pahud intentionally change the otherwise unchanged piece? thanks in advance p.s.: i don't judge nobody of course, and i loooove pahud's interpretation. i'm just asking if that's a matter of taste or something else happens here :)
I saw him in masterclass and he explained that in schubert's manuscript, the bar appears two times, but that dumb editors cut off the second time. Pahud always plays as Ürtext as he can.
beautiful demonstration of instrumental technique .... one day someone will even teach these talented instrumentalists that Schubert is not Stravinsky and that this theme is taken from a Song that has a text ....but today this is perhaps the most that can be expected. vive la technique!!!!
I can't agree with you. Have you ever play this ? This is not just technique. Maybe I would color it differently (in fact I do), but Pahud and Le Sage offered us music and emotions, not just a astonishingly fast bunch of notes.
I honestly admire Pahud, he has such a great tone. But the tempo of this piece is way too fast. I can barely enjoy it. It's an astonishing performance though.
This Flutist should have better vibrato- too wide. Also needs to play on Powell Pre-Cooper Flute. Needs to learn how to phrase better and support the Sound properly. Bob Kendel

Favorite composer, favorite flute player, and an amazing interpretation of this piece. This is a great recording!

Quel talent !!!
I love his interpretation of this piece... I have looked up to him since I was 17 and he inspires me to be a better musician!
I love this piece! The best piece of the flute repertoire in my opinion...
I couldn't agree more, all time favorite of mine, mindblowingly perfect!
This piece has never been one of my favorites. With that being said, I have now changed my mind. Emmanuel brought to life a piece that I thought was drab & boring. This is how a variations piece should be played. Loved all his "moods".
Have you ever been able to learn it and perform it? It's a flutist's staple to learn. Do you actually even play?
Yes. I studied this piece while studying with Houston Symphony Principal Byron Hester in 1979.

One of the best songs for flute performed by the best flutist.

@@patrickderp1044 Thanks for the tip!
one of the best music has been written and played for flute!
THIS (sc. variations) have not been arranged for flute and piano, it was only the theme, and it was not even the lied but only the music of it.

Gracias
C'est parfait!
So beautiful
The Variations and the theme are "Trockene Blumen" (Dry flowers) of the "Winterreise" (Winter journey)
Bravo!!!
Thanks for posting!

Emmanuel est aussi grand que Jean-Pierre Rampal!

Excellent playing from both musicians. But the experience is completely ruined by too many commercials. Shame on you TH-cam!

Unusually aggressive and flashy piano writing for Schubert.
It's a little-documented secret that Schubert often was frustrated by not being able to play his own music...
