And he never actually flew it technically either. In the ride its R2-D2 flying the Starspeeder. C-3P0 is just trapped in the pilots chair flailing his arms while R2 does what he wants.
Well actually its not ALL R2. The Starspeeder is initially taken off by the "Auto Take-Off Sequence". So leaving the space station was completely automatic but killing imperial pilots, innocent people aboard nearby Star Destroyers, and jumping to lightspeed is ALL R2. He's got quite a darkside if you think about his senseless killing..
Many people forget that this attraction opened doing a rather dark Era in Star Wars history. There were NO more movies on the immediate horizon, Star Wars toys were regulated to flea markets, the Droid and Ewok cartoons were cancelled and the only Star Wars news of note was a subdued 10th Anniversary celebration. In fact, the only new products related to Star Wars were the niche market of "Role Playing Games". It would be another 5 years until the Expanded Universe would reignite the Star Wars flame.
All I know is they used to play parts of this video on TVs within the waiting areas before entering the ride, and if the line was super long you'd watch it on repeat :)
I noticed hat this video features long lost dialogue between G2-9T & G2-4T. Amazing how at one point, they talked to each other.
In loving memory of the original star tours 1987-2010
