I legit get depressed when thinking about this time in yugioh. I was at my most competitive state, was in high school, I would go to locals. I was so happy with the 5ds tcg format and the anime. I wish I could go back....
Brother. We can't go back but we can play the format. Edison is very popular. Nothing going to replace Taco day at lunch > locals that night, or whatever your version was, you're right.
Find a locals! I recently moved and just found a locals that has group chats and plays Edison and goat every week with really solid turnouts. It’s just like playing Yugioh in 2010 all over again and everyone is down to build another format deck just purely for fun. Am absolute blast. You can’t be in 2010 but the game play is the same and the players are better
If I had to define Edison, it would be "The format without a tier 1", which is still true to this day. The closest thing to tier 1 is Blackwing if we include both pure and Vayu (Not Vayu turbo, it doesn't play like blackwing and only uses 7 blackwing monsters), because the 5 different HERO decks feel like 3 different builds (Frog, Dark and Beat, the latter 2 with 2 variants each), not a single deck is reaching double digits, which is why I said that at the beginning. Meanwhile Goat has a lot of sameyness, even without considering the fact the format is skewed towards Chaos Turbo, Warrior and Chaos/Goat control (3 Decklists occupy) due to an overabundance of almost mandatory staples who occupy half of your deck letting little room for creative deckbuilding. It's not like the format is perfect or anything, there's cards like D.A.D, royal opression, Cold Wave and Brionne around, while stuff like Trap Dustshoot, Brain Control, Gale, Stardust and Goyo are a bit too good at controlling the opponent (Seriously, there's a canon reason to make Stardust limited), but those are quite minor compared ot everything else it offers aka just a metagame who's the ideal to have in ygo (Looking at you, Tear Zero and Snake-eyes).
One of the best formats ever. I played it in covid outbreak with a friend and we loved it we even quit goat cuz we could use our beloved syncros and now I have like 8 edison decks lol. Btw my favs are hero diva beat and hero frogs
Current Edison is wildly popular and rather than just one or two decks becoming top decks that we see in other formats, it’s growing more towards any deck being playable. Way more played than goat. Goat had 14 pods at LA. Edison had over 100 lol
And is not like the decks are same-y. There's synchro decks like Zombies and Blackwing, Beat down with Heroes, Monarchs for tribute summon, Control with Machina, boss cheat with Dragons and Plants, Midrange with Lightsworn and Gladiator beasts, not to mention there's lots of hybridization. While there's plenty of powerful cards, they are limited by being a soft one per duel/limited and, unlike GOAT, they demand more specific deck construction, and if they are not limited they are difficult to access to like Red-Eyes.
Awesome vid! Always nice to see these popular retro formats from a more historical point of view. I have no idea the orders of these releases and hits and how people viewed these cards and decks at the time. No one played dragons? Insane to me!
That was the time where Yugioh had the perfect game speed. Beginning of XYZ was okay too imo. Now we’ve clearly removed the limiters from our D-runners…
I've noticed that in my week of playing Edison. Games last around 9 turns from my experience, which is kinda perfect for a game where you usually play 3 cards every 2 turns, one of which is to cycle.
4:14 or in eu cases, the cards at all, you'll notice this being a running problem in the games history and them being discontinued in the TCG is nothing but a boon for the game.
@@KaoruMzk you think ? I dont even start my first turn my opponent get a full board with 4000 atk and "negate effect" card. It's unplayable, and I have wait like almost 10 min for this becuase of special summon.

Thanks! It helps that I haven't played much Edison. I try and keep as little "modern" aspects as I can.

synchro era was the last good thing about yu gi oh. When xyz come, it was over.
XYZ weren't terrible off rip. They didn't seem real broken until Pens. Main deck monsters became very powerful at this point as well.
IMO once you get to Dragon Rulers there's no going back. Cat was out of the bag, Yugioh was all about winning on your first turn.
