Well i just wanted to speed up my endings so i unlocked all the new characters right from the begining...and i deafeated the game hard mode in 29 minutes evil fu**ing rainbow as well so yeah pretty easy just slash everyone

You can't speak with the new ones, but you can fight with them. Seems like a simple 'forgot-to-do' on moving the 40-based value to 48.
