Steve Renouf - absolute legend. I hope that he is remembered as such because he was always a quiet achiever with no histrionics. NSW used to place two men on him in state of origin games which tells you just how good he was.

the knights came 2nd only losing out on points difference and joey had an injury that knocked him out of the finals, at the very least it would have been a good game, i'd take the knights even if i didn't support them

I don’t even know the Newcastle back row so Tallis and thorn wont be troubled by them.
And I’d be confident that a broncos bench of Carroll, Ryan, campion and devere would win that too. Then Add to that Brisbane faced Newcastle in Newcastle and flogged them 26-6. In the state of origin that year Alfie absolutely demolished johns Fittler and Daley almost single-handedly. The reality is, 97-98 broncos weren’t gonna struggle with 97-98 Newcastle. They didn’t in 1996 either.

Johns was so much better a halfback compared to Alfie. Put Alfie at 6. In fact, put Matty Johns at 6 and let Langer tough it out at 9.
Also, Petero was not as good as Harragon.
And the knight back row was Simpson, Muir and Granville with hard men like Marquet coming off the bench. Better than the broncos back row.
And most of all. The knights werent traitors who ruined the game.
The knights were the first club to show allegiance to the ARL.
The worst of them is Bill Harrigan. A referee choosing to be a part of this sham competition.

One thing many don’t seem to remember is the reason there’s guys wearing numbers like 33 and what not is because super league didn’t actually have positional numbering. It had individual numbers. The reason it didn’t work was stars like Langer, Renouf and sailor for example just stuck firm with their numbers from the positional system. So no one really noticed.
Renouf the “pearl” is the most underrated player of all time. Pure class arguably the best centre of his era.

I'm well aware that it was Murdoch's idea. But I think Arthurson was suggesting in his comments, that the Broncos were the first team approached and agreed to Super League.
Ken Arthuson maybe a one-eyed Manly supporter, But that does not discount that he was high up in Rugby League. And would of known some connected people, that would have had a pretty good idea on what was going on. He was chairman of the ARL when it all happened. I think that makes him a pretty solid source.
Well if we use your logic then none of the stats or anything from before 1998 should be counted in the NRL. The NRL is a combination of the SuperLeague and the NSWRL. There have been 3 completely separate competitions that have all played rugby league, and the current competition chooses to include the history of both the older ones. That means we have to discard 90 years of heritage, 90 grand final winners, the immortals and heaps of other stuff.
But the NSWRL, ARL and the NRL are all the same competition. The only thing that has happened is they've passed the control of the competition off to the other organisation. First from the NSWRFL/NSWRL, then in 1995, they passed control over to the ARL, in 1998 they passed it over to the NRL Partnership (owned by News Corp and the ARL), and now it's been passed on to the ARL Commisssion.
I don't agree with Zbfague, as I believe the SL failed miserablely, and didn't put a dent in the ARL.
The 1994 raiders team is the greatest club team I've ever seen but in a very close 2nd is this 1997 broncos team which I rate higher then there 92 and 98 teams.
Yeah that was a heck of a tall order for the Sharks to face: Langer, Walters, Renouf, Lockyer, Sailor, Tallis, Webcke, Smith, Mundine, Hancock... cripes!

Such a weakened comp for both Superleague and ARL. I’m surprised those grandfinals still stand. I guess Brisbane winning the following year cemented peoples beliefs about who the top team was in 1997. The superleague grandfinal had nothing on ARL due to the dramatic finish. 👍
How good was there system tho, bill harrigan was always persistent and thorough, never scared to just make a judgement call and no video reff needed hardly ever......our game needs more reffs like this.

John Ribot had positions on Bronco's boards, including a being a shareholder, when he approached them about joining Super-league.
Also Arthurson dissatisfaction with these administrators, is well founded. Ribot threatened to sue Bulldogs players for leaving for the ARL- even after ARL players walked away from their contracts for Superleague. Gallop as NRL CEO complained when SBW walked out. Yet forgets to mention he was a lawyer for Newslimited, and broke 200 ARL contracts in the courts.
I don't see why the Knights shouldn't count their premiership. After the Super league comp ended and reformed with the NRL. The ARL made it clear that all records of Superleague would not be included in the NRL record books. That includes premierships. By the way the Newcastle vs Manly grand final left this Super league grand final for dead.

Now you tell me "to get past it" because it's "not sinking in". The original comment was made by Boulty123 that Super-league did not start with the Broncos. I don't care if Ribot was the owner or not. It's doesn't change the facts, that the Broncos were the first team approached about Superleague.

@Au55ieBloke787 It was News Ltd's attempt to take over the ARL. It effectively split premier level rugby league between between two competitions (ARL's Optus Cup and SL's Telstra Cup). The two competitions agreed to merge later that year.
With conditions to do more destructive work in destroying ARL clubs especially the Foundation 1908 clubs & promoting their clubs. That was no merger it was the final knife & then comes 2008 100 years of Rugby League and those idiots thought they could edit 100 years to clubs in current form. They’re only able to get away with it, when South Sydney was re-established
The NRL records state otherwise, and that's all that matters. It's even on the front of the Broncos heritage jerseys.

For those too young too remember, this is what's considered the real premiership of 1997. The ARL competition that Drugcastle won was very poor, the skill level was abysmal. When both comps combined the following year, as expected the mighty Broncos steam rolled every team.

Canberra only got done for salary cap rorting in 91. They didn't win the comp that year. So all Raiders premierships stand proud. Brisbane got let off in 92 and 93

Boulty123 years later after Super league had ended and it was couple after Ken Arthurson was Chairman of the ARL. Arthurson appeared on the Sudnay Footy Show. Paul Vautin asked him straight out where did Super League started. Arthurson fired back straight way "it started with the Broncos". Arthurson also said he never blamed the players for taking more money and going to super league. But he did blame the administrators who started the break away comp.
You know the highest paid team in arl and super league was the parramatta eels in the arl. Stop acting like super league was about money and arl was about sport. It was all about money and the arl was certainly part of it, and frankly their Sydney centric BS is what got them in the situation.
I take your point on the records. But the TV ratings and crowd figures don't prove anything. A Broncos team in the grand final and a NSW team is always going to rate higher with the Queensland viewers. Then two NSW teams playing each other. Also Brisbane had never held a grand final before and it's venue is bigger in capacity in the QEII then the SFS. And it was held before the ARL's grand final.
I liked Peter Sterling's suggestion of having a Superbowl type Grand Final Knights vs the Broncos.
No way the ARL would have let that happen, they wouldn't want to get destroyed on national tv. Although everyone knows what happened the next year when both comps combined, the Broncos slaughtered everyone else, leaving no doubt who the REAL premiers of 97 were.

Again you need do some reading. It was about news corporation and it's owner rupert murdoch, owned the super league and they started it because they couldn't broadcast the ARL. John Ribot WAS NOT the Broncos CEO at the time of the super league he was the FORMER CEO of the Broncos. Also News corporation are a majority owner of the broncos and full owner of melbourne. also they were not the first to join.

As for suing, you only do that when you have a case and the money to do it and you can also have the latter and not the former. the terms and conditions of contracts are pretty loose and have to pertain to federal laws which considers many things. so really they couldn't do shit other than be publicly disgusted. so they just have to get over it.

so... even if the "fact" that Broncos were CONTACTED first, which is irrelevant. though should be expected that the idea of the people who own them and started the competition, would want them in it to hold any weight. though the discussions came about prior to that and were put forth in motion by the outraged parties who didn't get the broadcasting rights. hence giving birth to the super league, then getting teams into the comp.
You do realise it was played in brisbane because it was the super league, not the arl. Quit whinging because you have never won a grand final. No matter where it was played you would not have won this year.

Super League's great "vision" was to generate revenue for News Limited after it missed out on the Pay TV rights to the ARL. It had nothing to do with the greater good of the game, which is evidenced by the underhanded manner in which News Limited tore apart the game to start up their rebel competition.
