    In this video, we take a look at how to test a pool pump motor capacitor with a multi-meter. If your pool pump motor makes a humming sound when you try to turn it on, then following these steps can help you determine if you need a new capacitor or a new motor.

    I’m a pool tech and see this issue all the time. I will get a volt meter that can test capacitors. Very helpful. Thanks!

    😀Thank you, you guys rock. Motor (~$600), the capacitor was $14 and available locally. (5 minutes 2 screws) I would have ordered it from INYO, but time was important in the case.

    If my capacitor is rated 124-148 and I am getting 152, is that close enough or does it need to be replaced? It does not have a tolerance % printed on body.

    I found a flaw that caused the pump to burn. The yellow wire from what I believe is the starter cap caught on the flywheel. Luckily I was standing next to the pump and turned it off in time.
    I repaired it by soldering the wire back and added tie wraps to prevent a repeat.
    I just wanted to make you aware of this because it could happen to any pump and if the tie wraps were added in the factory, it could prevent this. Had I not been there, there would have been a fire.
    I have pictures if you are interested.

    Thanks! Definitely a helpful video! Now, I have to see if the capacitance result being higher than the reference range is ok. Mine is 200-240 and the test shows it at 260?? Margin for error, perhaps.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      There might be a +/- 5%; sometimes it is 6% or 10%; that would explain the difference.

    I have the exact capacitor in your video. Its reading 116. So im assuming it needs to be replaced??

      If your capacitor is rated as 124 - 149 MFD like the one we show, then yes, you would need to replace it. Start Capacitor, 124-149 MFD - BC-124 - www.inyopools.com/Products/07501352014032.htm

    KI have a pump in which the start capacitor emits smoke as soon as I turn the power on. Replaced the capacitor , it does the sma thing. What coul be the cause?

    • @Inyopools
      @Inyopools  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Your capacitor seems to be overheating, so I would presume there is an issue with the circuitry. My guess would be something is causing overcurrent. I suggest having a licensed electrician troubleshoot the circuit.

    My Pentair pump stopped working and nothing shows on the display either. A tech checked it and said there is power going to the unit so it’s not electrical. Would a bad capacitor cause these symptoms? Thx.

      When you say "display" are you referring to a IntelliFlo's motor mounted control/timer?

    My pump is making a kinda loud noise but its working it didn't use to make that noise but water is flowing and the pump running. what's wrong with the pump

    • @Inyopools
      @Inyopools  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The most common cause would be bearings that are beginning to fail. The motor will continue to get louder until eventually, the shaft seizes up. The bearings can be replaced, if you are handy and have the correct tools. Most pool owners replace the motor once the noise gets too loud.

    What if there is no humming noise when u turn it on ...pump does not come on... silent

    I have a well pump that won't start and I purchased a start capacitor that goes on the outside of the motor since the original capacitor tested at 205 micro farads when it should be in the range of 161-193 micro farads. The new capacitor tested at around 194 micro farads. The motor still won't start and just hums. Should the new capacitor be in the range or does it mean that it is bad being outside the range by just 1 micro farad? I was planning soon to open the end of the motor to see what is inside. I did not realize that there could be another capacitor. I just assumed the capacitor on the outside was the start capacitor. Maybe it is not!

      I had also not starting motor with run capacitor bad, start cap was good at the end of the motor shaft but run cap failed and didn't kick in. Did you try to spin the shaft by finger? Sometime the impeller gets clogged or the shaft in that area sticks in on older motors. I don't have burnt winding very much cause there is a thermal cutoff protection and the system is frequently turned off by the customer if it doesn't run.

    I can't tell what that symbol is you are turning your meter too. Am I blind? I don't recognize it. It does not look like I have that on my meter. Can someone explain?

    • @Inyopools
      @Inyopools  ปีที่แล้ว

      The meter you're using may not have the ability to test capacitance.
