Well it's kinda more than that, His dad wakes him up really early to have him deliver Tofu on top of a mountain pass, His dad knew he'd probably drive fast just to get the delivery over with and sleep like you said so he gives him a cup of water to make sure the tofu doesn't get ruined and so his driving would be smooth, and after 4-5 years of driving the mountain pass he pretty much becomes the fastest (or next to the fastest compared to his dad) on the pass.
