If she had hit him with the shovel though, it could have killed him, especially if she hit him in the head? People strung out on drugs are dangerous because I dont think they feel any pain? Years ago 5 Deputies jumped my cousin trying to subdue him. He was strung out and they still had to use their batons on him.
She was not ready to be helped, as an adult she still had free choice, her thinking was messed up by drugs, but it was Still her free choice. She chose not to change, so their hands were tied. Trying to force change, and taking away people's rights, is how you end up dead too. As he kept saying, easy to think of something better later, and no way in a "far from ideal world" to see outcomes before the fact.
Honest to goodness this man is the most rational, smart, level headed, decent, heart connected man. He inspires and gives me faith there are decent human beings holding a position in true sense of the word “ in service”. He would be a wonderful choice to lead the US as president. I would love to meet and hug him!
Why is it that when someone truly great, like this Sheriff comes along, people automatically want him for a president? It's so foolish. He'd get assassinated right off the bat when the powers that be would try to school him on how it is to be a part of running the government, by other politicians, or their toadies. Something bad usually happens when humans get into power. They become easy to corrupt with their perceived sense of power and cave in to pressure from the good old boy system. I don't believe this Sheriff would allow that to be done to him. He's too aware and I think he lives according to our laws. Since politicians are so shallow in character, they wouldn't be able to tolerate the real thing in office. Dream on, Susie, or get your head out of the clouds and wake up. It's the people out here in life who elect the yahoos that get into office. No president could clean up the whole process while any of us sit on our hands out here and excuse the criminals for what they do to society!

Sheriff Grady makes a very valid point about mental health professionals and those termed "co-responders". The points he makes are valid here in Australia. Mental Health professionals have a vital role to play in terms of patient/client management however for a variety of reasons Police are the ones called upon to deal with someone who is in a mental health crisis. Our mental health teams do not work 24/7 nor will they attend locations to deal with crisis management. They will not even proactively search for absconding patients. The reason they do not respond is due to the dangers that people in crisis and at times others present on scene pose. This is also the same reasons why Police are often formally requested to provide or be present during a mental health escort from one facility to another when clearly the person is the responsibility of the Health Department. This is why over the past 10-15 years Police have been given ever increasing amounts of mental health training to be better equipped to deal with people in crisis. In my opinion, the more training Police are required to do in relation to mental health is an indication that the mental health system is failing. However, Police can have all the mental health training in the world and despite that training, their intentions and efforts to de-escalate a situation can develop, usually rapidly, that requires the officer to defend themselves or another which ends in tragedy.
Agreed. It is up to the individual Officer. They are given small pay raises and are better equipped....I know a guy that worked up for our department. Saved 8 people from drowning , accidents, suicide....and 1 body recovery and got that people on death row. Good guy; seems to care about the job
Having worked in corrections and incarcerated youth, at-risk group homes, and at-risk public schools, I feel the deputy acted appropriately in self-defence. The shame lies in the lack of mental institutions and facilities to house the growing number of drug-addicted mental cases. Thank you officer Grady for your outstanding service.
honestly the cop could of just out ran the woman lol...the cop basicly made it a legal suicide by cop, if that cop didnt have a law saying hes allowed to kill her in that situation, he and her would still be alive and he would be completely fine lol thats just a fact.

Just listening to the comments tell you how lost America is. It is absolutely absurd that this woman dies to he hands of the Police. I lived in 8 countries and the US is by far the most violent. In France; the Police is not allowed to discharge it's weapon only if presented with deadly force at the same level. This is not normal. This is not a lawful action. I am a retired Deputy Sheriff, having proudly served for 27 years in California. I wish I had the privilege of working for Sheriff Grady, he is a man of character and backs his people as long as they are doing what's right. My entire career I worked for a Sheriff that was corrupt and sadly several members of her command staff were corrupt. During my career, I saw people promoted because they slept with someone or because they were a certain race and threatened a lawsuit if they were not promoted. During my career, very few people were actually hired because they had a degree, worked their way up through the ranks, were qualified and deserved to be promoted. Sadly, throughout my career I saw firsthand supervisors blatantly lying and getting away with it, the corruption started at the top, our Sheriff was a disgrace especially to those who proudly wear our uniform and I'm glad to see that she is being forced out of office. Sheriff Grady is a Godly, moral man of character the citizens of Florida are blessed to have him as their Sheriff. Thank you Sir for your true leadership and for setting the standards up high!!!
"Hweih doesn’t deny that her sister, the mother of two young girls ages 6 and 2 months, had a history of trouble that includes assault, drugs and battery on a police officer. But it was brought on, she says, by mental health issues and drug addiction. " That does not prevent the police from defending themselves and others. It makes the family responsible for doing as much as possible to get that family member UNDER self control if possible, if not under control of a psychiatrist or psychiatric ward or hospital. The police are not at fault if there is not clear communication as to what is wrong, or if the social services do not get the person into the right place, or if the court does not function fully for the person.
Whether as a cop, a male or female private citizen, or whomever (fill-in-the-blank), if presented with a real threat (perceived, real, there's no mistake), the person who is in defense mode with an attack has no idea of the threat person's background, how he / she was raised, how many kids he / she has, or if this is an abused or battered person. Each of us has the fundamental right to self-defense. What about YOUR kids? What about YOUR job and family and YOUR aspirations and goals? As Gordan Runyan states near the end in his excellent book, 'Resistance to Tyrants,' "second shooter is first victim." Something the liberal press has no clue, or seems that way. You must have made the decision long ago that you will use violent non-lethal or lethal force on someone who is about to harm you. This deputy was trained, alert, and he gave the woman plenty of opportunity to stop. She did not. I am sure he feels bad about it, but he had no choice. Kudos on Sheriff Judd for stating, clearly, the obvious, and for backing his people.
All power to the sergeant. He gets to go home. It is not good that a life is lost but she came at someone who was able to protect themselves. Don't mess with people. If you take drugs, that is your problem and the consequences are on you.

@Chau Pham Theres a link in the description above to the news story. She didnt look very big and didnt look like he was either? If she had hit him with the shovel though, it could have killed him, especially if she hit him in the head? People strung out on drugs are dangerous because I dont think they feel any pain? Years ago 5 Deputies jumped my cousin trying to subdue him. He was strung out and they still had to use their batons on him.
No we dont, he is nothing but a politician wearing a uniform instead of a suit.
And stands behind the truth and justice when hus officers aren't honorable or worth being stood behind.
This privacy versus accountability topic needs more discussion.
They're no expectation of privacy in public this guy is full of it
Sad what happened and I pray her children live a great life and are loved, She should have listened and the family should have helped her
She was not ready to be helped, as an adult she still had free choice, her thinking was messed up by drugs, but it was Still her free choice.
Yes he uses commonsense and logic this country is in a bad place but you know what happens to good men in politics just remember Kennedy.
Sheriff Judd, thank you for everything you do. It's just so hard to understand why in the world people want to blame law enforcement instead of the criminals.

You beat me to it!!!!
I love this sheriff, but let’s not be completely ignorant here, that was a dumb answer. The person asking the question has the job of reporting the news (take that with a grain of salt), the police have the job of dealing with situations like this. For him to basically ask a journalist why he wasn’t being an officer is ridiculous. His explanation on body cameras is equally as ridiculous. He’s a great sheriff, but he’s a LEO through & through, & with that comes some not so great characteristics as well, regardless of whether you choose to be ignorant of that fact or not.

Kudos to you and your team on your actions taken to keep the community safe. I like your stance on body cams.
This "deputy " sucks! A tazer... Could had called for back up! Stop senseless killing. If this was YOUR child... Then what??? You're sick in the head. People are lacing drugs and most don't know. You need training about life. Go to hell.

There have been very limited instances in my adult life where I've really been brought to question my own beliefs and opinions about certain things, and listening to this Sheriff talk about the body cameras is one of those instances. I can't say definitively that he's totally changed my mind about the subject, but I most certainly am questioning it and am DEFINITELY more open minded to the topic and its different sides. Wow. Keep questioning things and you’ll find most of the time officers are right in the decisions they make. I catch myself giving officers the benefit of the doubt and then you find some where it’s impossible to do that.

Looks like she dug her own grave with that shovel so to speak .
