He’s defending his Deputy🙄and he’s supposed to! This poor woman died bc she couldn’t or wouldn’t get the help she needed. The rehabs/mental health ppl dropped her like a hot potato. Because she’s violent. Her own Mother tried! It’s sad but, the Sgt. didn’t become a Sgt. because he can do the best pit maneuver💆🏻‍♀️these LEO’s HAVE to do these trainings. When you’re in the moment, faced with a angry meth’d out Baker Acted person who is unmedicated: with a shovel, no less…you have a half a second or less to react. You pull your weapon and fire and your adrenaline is exploding and you MUST keep your wits about you AND remain calm. Sheriff is defending his man bc he did the right thing. Like he said: where were YOU? It’s sad that her parents are left to pick up the pieces and maybe raise her poor children, who have to live with this as well. There’s SO much the layperson can learn from this Sheriff. He knows what he’s talking about. I’ve never seen a man of his caliber, sit in front of a camera in a press conference, and educate the citizens correctly. He’s right. There is one disadvantage of not having body cams. Body cams have helped the police in the court room far more than they help criminals (99% of the time). Most claims of police brutality are proven false after body cam footage is reviewed in a courtroom. So body cams can be a good thing to have.

Why is it that when someone truly great, like this Sheriff comes along, people automatically want him for a president? It's so foolish. He'd get assassinated right off the bat when the powers that be would try to school him on how it is to be a part of running the government, by other politicians, or their toadies. Something bad usually happens when humans get into power. They become easy to corrupt with their perceived sense of power and cave in to pressure from the good old boy system. I don't believe this Sheriff would allow that to be done to him. He's too aware and I think he lives according to our laws. Since politicians are so shallow in character, they wouldn't be able to tolerate the real thing in office. Dream on, Susie, or get your head out of the clouds and wake up. It's the people out here in life who elect the yahoos that get into office. No president could clean up the whole process while any of us sit on our hands out here and excuse the criminals for what they do to society!

The person asking the question has the job of reporting the news (take that with a grain of salt), the police have the job of dealing with situations like this. For him to basically ask a journalist why he wasn’t being an officer is ridiculous. His explanation on body cameras is equally as ridiculous. He’s a great sheriff, but he’s a LEO through & through, & with that comes some not so great characteristics as well, regardless of whether you choose to be ignorant of that fact or not.

Sheriff Grady makes a very valid point about mental health professionals and those termed "co-responders". The points he makes are valid here in Australia. Mental Health professionals have a vital role to play in terms of patient/client management however for a variety of reasons Police are the ones called upon to deal with someone who is in a mental health crisis. Our mental health teams do not work 24/7 nor will they attend locations to deal with crisis management. They will not even proactively search for absconding patients. The reason they do not respond is due to the dangers that people in crisis and at times others present on scene pose. This is also the same reasons why Police are often formally requested to provide or be present during a mental health escort from one facility to another when clearly the person is the responsibility of the Health Department.
This is why over the past 10-15 years Police have been given ever increasing amounts of mental health training to be better equipped to deal with people in crisis. In my opinion, the more training Police are required to do in relation to mental health is an indication that the mental health system is failing. However, Police can have all the mental health training in the world and despite that training, their intentions and efforts to de-escalate a situation can develop, usually rapidly, that requires the officer to defend themselves or another which ends in tragedy.

I am a retired Deputy Sheriff, having proudly served for 27 years in California. I wish I had the privilege of working for Sheriff Grady, he is a man of character and backs his people as long as they are doing what's right. My entire career I worked for a Sheriff that was corrupt and sadly several members of her command staff were corrupt. During my career, I saw people promoted because they slept with someone or because they were a certain race and threatened a lawsuit if they were not promoted. During my career, very few people were actually hired because they had a degree, worked their way up through the ranks, were qualified and deserved to be promoted. Sadly, throughout my career I saw firsthand supervisors blatantly lying and getting away with it, the corruption started at the top, our Sheriff was a disgrace especially to those who proudly wear our uniform and I'm glad to see that she is being forced out of office.

But it was brought on, she says, by mental health issues and drug addiction. " That does not prevent the police from defending themselves and others. It makes the family responsible for doing as much as possible to get that family member UNDER self control if possible, if not under control of a psychiatrist or psychiatric ward or hospital. The police are not at fault if there is not clear communication as to what is wrong, or if the social services do not get the person into the right place, or if the court does not function fully for the person.

Whether as a cop, a male or female private citizen, or whomever (fill-in-the-blank), if presented with a real threat (perceived, real, there's no mistake), the person who is in defense mode with an attack has no idea of the threat person's background, how he / she was raised, how many kids he / she has, or if this is an abused or battered person. Each of us has the fundamental right to self-defense. What about YOUR kids? What about YOUR job and family and YOUR aspirations and goals? As Gordan Runyan states near the end in his excellent book, 'Resistance to Tyrants,' "second shooter is first victim." Something the liberal press has no clue, or seems that way. You must have made the decision long ago that you will use violent non-lethal or lethal force on someone who is about to harm you. This deputy was trained, alert, and he gave the woman plenty of opportunity to stop. She did not. I am sure he feels bad about it, but he had no choice.

Is there a reason why he had to shoot 4 times in order to subdue her ???

People on drugs and adrenalin are hard to subdue most of the time...Of the 4, I'm sure only 1 stopped her...Sad, but necessary...

Some of these "reporters" have never seen a body after an attack with a shovel. Extremely gruesome.

Do the reporters ever listen to themselves? Why is it they cannot understand what they are being told. The Sheriff's Department should bring reporters along with them and have the reporters handle these situations. That MIGHT put a lick of sense into the prejudiced reporters.

@@dd_ranchtexas4501, yep, worth thinking over. Send them in first to get to know the situation and then they can tell the officers how to handle it. Should they come back, that is. 😂 I just don't see a down side to it.
