Can You Cook Dinner With a 100 Watt Solar Panel? Simple

  • Can only a single 100 watt solar panel cook a whole meal? I have built several insulated solar electric cookers (see below), but many would prefer to buy one off the store shelf. What if a company was already manufacturing one these appliances, but didn't know that they were? In this video I test a potentially plug-and-play direct DC solar electric cooker solution. I will plug it into a 100 watt 12v solar panel - and show the end results. Let's see if it works!
    There are not many (if any) direct solar electric cookers on the store shelf, they tend to be a DIY project. The thermal cooker shown in this video was never intended to be used this way, so it's possible for the appliances to burn out. However, I think it's worth the risk. This cooker acts like a hybrid slow cooker or instapot. With low power input, it takes a long time to work. With 50-60 watts, it cooks pretty fast.

    1. This cooker was never intended or designed to be used this way, so proceed with caution.
    2. There should be liquid in the pot before starting to cook. Never run the cooker while dry
    3. Probably should exceed 50-60 watts. The rated specification states 36 watts.

    Well that's pretty slick! Much better solution for winter solar cooking too since it's so well insulated and can be inside and not out in a snow bank!

      @colin8532 Good thinking... I sure do not want to be in a snow bank trying to cook lol. The solar panel is immune to freezing unlike humans. I'm sad that this cooker is out of stock now. Oh well

    very cool! I find this direct solar DC very appealing for cooking because batteries are expensive and fragile. Because it's not a fire hazard this means you could also cook like, inside a tent!

      @dominictarrsailing That's exactly right... and a pair of wires can bring the cooking indoors out of the elements, a very civilized experience

      @OFFGRID_Trucker Sounds like a good time to slow cook a steak and some veggies :) I sure like the idea of a solar ice maker. Been working with various refrigeration compressors and already made some "frost" on solar. If I can find a cheap icemaker, it just might happen!

    I use an All American Sun Oven to cook mostly meat (because im a carnivore) and all i do is set it (30-minute adjustments) and forget it. Easy peasy!

      Burns Milwaukee (older name I think) User since 1998. Worlds best solar cooker in my humble opinion. I love cooking Soup Beans! (yeah, brown beans for up North) just cannot be beat. I have made several home versions, some very efficient but I believe a Burns or All American is one the better solar investment s!

    Since the lids seem to seal to be leak proof and to be as energy efficient as possible on many similar units, was there any pressure build up during boiling/cooking during your tests? Curious if this could be an issue since just a couple psi could be dangerous when opening. Overall really like the idea.

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @jimbaggett1233 The lid is made out of plastic with a double layer, no rubber gasket - seals OK without being air tight. Does not build any pressure that I could tell. Burned myself with hot condensation dripping off the lid when it was opened!

      @@solarpoweredge maybe someone else has a similar cooker . As a truck driver, truck stops and RV centers sell 12 volt cooking appliances .

      @solarpoweredge  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @richardduke9788 Yes, that would be great. If you run across any insulated cookers that have a DC input, please feel free to post here. It's hard to find ones that have insulation. (I did find a DC slow cooker but it's just a ceramic pot)

    Wouldn't an heater as a restrictive load, when connected directly to the solar panel - put a strain on the solar panel itself and/or on solar panel's junction box or what was its actual name for it?

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @BulmaSoft No worries, it won't harm the panel at all. It's safe to connect a heater to a solar panel or any resistive load. In fact I run modified space heaters this way :) th-cam.com/video/TJG-ZnqJR9w/w-d-xo.html

    Good fun. Cooking is just another type of engineering - you follow the scientific principle carefully, only making changes only when you question or can improve on the process. Rules of thumb; use as little water as you can, get the salt right, use butter or some other fat, never use just one opinion - including your own.

    • @solarpoweredge
      @solarpoweredge  3 หลายเดือนก่อน
