I was a engine run man in Engine Conditioning in the Air Force back in the late 60's. I would go from one plane to another running engines and checking them out and what was called trimming engines where all 8 were set at the same E.P.R. (Engine Pressure Ratio). I loved running them and the KC-135 Tankers. I finished out my career in the Air National Guard as a Flight Engineer on C-130 Hercules. The Air Force and Air National Guard were good to me and gave me a chance to see the world and gain knowledge I would never would have gained if they hadn't given me the training and skills to operate these magnificent aircraft. Can you imagine a 18 year old at the controls of the engines of a B-52, and KC-135 Tankers while other guys my age were flipping hamburgers or working in a gas station. What an experience and memories.
+Richard Jones That's a good life story... and I'm sure you're not the only one who turned out OK (partly because of the military). Thanks for your comment.
You are confused. A lot of young men found themselves and their pride serving this country in the Armed Forces. There were 8 million in the service during Vietnam, and only 1 in 17 carried a gun. It takes a whole lot of men and material to defend a nation and a way of life. You have no idea how lucky you are to be born under the protective auspices of the United States government and its military. Have you been mistreated or crapped on in your unfulfilled life? It's not the fault of the United States government, or her military.
I got stationed at Homestead fl in the winter of 1958. We had B-47's and KC-97's there. I worked on Nav aids and normally on Kc-97's. Got to ride on a lot of refueling missions. We were hearing about B-52's and Kc-135's but normally didn't see them there until I worked ion a transient kc-135 once about a year later. A fun time in my life.
I remember in the first Iraq war, these would take off from near our house in Oxford, UK. We would go down after school and watch them take off. The thrust of one plane shook the entire area!
Some of those were probably G models, which were still in service back then. The G's had J57 turbojets, which were even older, louder, and smokier than the low bypass TF33 fans that are only on the H models. The B-52s in this video are all H models, which is the only model B-52 left in service.
Adrian Whittaker, I live in the city where Barksdale is. I happened to be in the right place at the right time when the bombers scrambled and saw them depart. There was no question what was going to happen next.
My brother was on Vietnam 3 times. He also was stationed at McGuire AFB for 2 years and mustered out there. They had a bunch of these planes in the sixties and seventies. They flew out every day towards Russia. AWESOME watching them take off and land.
I was at Loring AFB in Maine and watched 12 go off in under 5 minutes in 1966! They were fully loaded with nukes, and the crews didn't know where they were going till they were in the air, and didn't know if they were on their way to Russia for 30 minutes or more! It was as dramatic as anything I've ever seen! These planes are in a class by themselves.
That would be a good old fashioned Delta alert. After some unfortunate accidents with aircraft carrying nukes, SAC stopped doing Delta alerts and Chrome Dome.
Awesome! I grew up near Barksdale in Bossier City and watched for years when I was a kid seeing them fly low and loud over the house doing the touch and goes. We called it the sound of freedom!

I first fell in love with the B-52 when I saw one at the American Air Museum segment of Duxford Air Museum in the U.K. It’s the best collection of American aircraft in the U.K. They have a B-29, B-17s, B-25s, a B-24, P-51s, P-47s (they did have a P-38 but crashed it at an air show) a Grumman Avenger, an F-15 and their latest addition is an SR-71. Nothing does justice to the scale of the B-52 like witnessing it yourself. I think it’s a Vietnam era A model
Barksdale AFB! January 16, 1991, early in the afternoon: Seven B-52 of the 2nd Bomb Wing take off to their mission to Iraq. January 17, 2 a.m. over Saudi Arabia, more than 8.200 mls away from Barksdale, the B-52 fired 35 AGM-86 against eight targets in Iraq, all in the area of Mosul: communications centers, centers of air defense and air force bases. Operation Desert Storm has begun. 34 hours 20 minutes after their take off, the bombers of the 2nd Bomb Wing landed again at Barksdale AFB. Respect to the crews of the BUFF!!
A friend of mines dad here in Bossier worked on KC-135's at Barksdale at the time. He went to Saudi Arabia and his wife decided to cheat on him while he was gone so they split when he got back. 👎👎👎 Yea I still remember that and I was only 10 yrs old at the time. I remember when 9/11 happened I was laying on the field at LSU Shreveport stretching before baseball practice and the sky went black with smoke from the full squadron taking off I guess so they weren't on the ground to attack.
Balls 19 used to be a K.I.Sawyer AFB bird, because I flew on her in 1977. Along with Balls 4 and balls 2.
Best time in my military career. But I was young; 19 years old. Too bad the gunners position died with Glasnost.
Roger, Beckner,
You should see what KI, SAWYER is like now. A fucking garbage dump. Nothing but drug labs, and low life scumbags there. A real waste.
Roger, Beckner,
Bottom line is that they could have kept the base open for the national guard. Instead they fucked everything up and turned it into a garbage dump.
That's what democrats do.
Ah yes, a modern day bazelguese
