  • Commercial avocado production is still relatively new for Lebanese farmers, and the demand for avocado in both domestic and in Gulf countries provides farmers with the incentive to convert their existing orchards to avocado production and also planting new orchards. Lebanon’s climate and geography is ideal for producing avocado fruit which is small in size with a taste that is very appealing-providing the perfect combination for commercial production.
    LIVCD worked with Lebanese avocado value chain actors to:
    • Increase production and availability of avocados on domestic markets;
    • Assist farmers by creating access to improved inputs such as nurseries;
    • Provide the skills and knowledge to graft commercial avocado cultivars onto old trees;
    • Introduce technology that improves the quality and reduces bottlenecks and overhead costs ;
    • Support farmers to conduct feasibility studies to investment in and or accessing financial services to expand or enter in avocado production.
    • Support the establishment of new market channels both in the domestic, local, and regional markets.
    LIVCD assisted the sector to become organized through a strong network between aggregators, producers and trained service providers. LIVCD has supported three extension centers and two cooperatives to be self- sustaining through their provision of paid technical assistance and other services.
    National avocado production is expected to double in the next five years. LIVCD aimed to support the establishment of new market channels both in the domestic local and regional markets. In addition the project has supported the development of an innovative opportunity for second grade Avocado to be used in cosmetic products helping to off take surplus production.
