Thanks for this Andrew, my dad had an old rowing machine for whitewater rafting and consequently I love rows- and have finally gotten to a toes and rings at the same height level and added a small plate- I superset them with weighted ring push ups and that’s 1/3 of my upper body day🔥
Nuts what progess we can make when we REALLY decide to start truly using our body as resistance. And sounds like you're making class gains here mate!! 💪🏿
So slightly different muscle focus I guess. Great video, particularly as I recently got rings, though would have liked a little more detail on how they compare to pull/chin-ups given that, as noted, rows are usually characterised as a progression towards pull ups. Currently, I'm hoping they may be significantly better for rear delts, which is likely disproportionately weak compared to front delts for most people (prob bad for posture). I'm still not entirely clued up on what movement planes the delts operate in tbh.
About time people showed rows some love! What I find frustrating, though, is that progressing from incline to horizontal is very hard to track. Even tiny changes in the position of the feet have a major impact and make it really hard for me to achieve proper progressive overload. That's where pull ups are a bit simpler.
They are a fantastic exercise! You're right though, the set up is so important to monitor, and that is why I try my best to have the EXACT same set up each time I do it - so worth it though 💪🏿
Thank you for this. I have been thinking for awhile about actually quitting pull ups and focusing on bodyweight rows, since honestly I'm not that strong in either. You convinced me. Appreciate your willingness to share and put it out there
When short on time I'll typically do 3x superset of pull ups and dips, followed by 3x supersets of horizontal rows and decline push ups or pike variety. If there's a better or more adaptable horizontal pulling exercise than the humble bodyweight row then I've yet to hear about it! Excellent work mate
Awesome video, I always felt rows have been slept on when they unlock so many things and continuing providing value even to advanced athletes. I think the main issue is finding the right set up,
100%, Malcolm that is what I see too! Metting the rings or the bar at the right height, understanding where to put your feet etc. many people see that and just say 'screw this, I'll do barbell rows'
Pulling to the chest will still be great - this is the normal bodyweight row. But as you get more advanced, pulling to the waist line is a great progression
I do these exact things with rings...I discovered them on my own by flipping my hands over and you pull more towards your waste line instead of your chest. They are awesome! Subscribed. Your backyard setup looks awesome bro.
Great video. Thank you. Do you ever get pain on the inside of your elbow - what they call golfer's elbow? Is there a way to remedy this? Could you consider addressing in a future video? No matter what, thanks again!
Great video man. I'm the only one doing rows at the calisthenics park, they're all missing out. The progression you show with scapular rotation is called "Arc Rows" btw. There is also Wide Rows to target your rear delts. My favourite has to be One Arm Rows. If you can do them horizontally you're hella strong. And finally a popular choice for the more advanced crowd is Front Lever Rows.
Thank you! And yeah I love one arm rows too, but you're right, they are not for the faint hearted and require a silly amount of strength. I currently do them at a big incline. p.s. I am VERY far away from front lever rows 😭😭😭
Superb excercise! I NEED to add these in ASAP as I also took them as beginner only. Stupid of me when I've only recently added machine cable low rows but using a wide bar for a shoulder width grip. Therefore I'm basically doing the machine version of THIS very excercise! It's benefits can be felt straight away as I'd previously only ever done close grip (palms facing) low cable rows. I immediately felt the big change in muscles being used (they pumped up) with it feeling like a SUPERB exercise for the entirety of the upper back
Fair play to you for pivoting back to them Dave! And yeah I can't stress how OP rows are generally but Bodyweight rows really do take the cake.... They take the whole bakery really 🔥🔥
Thanks for that friend, I could never do that exercise even though can do twenty pull-ups and bench over 400lb never thought of taking it to my midsection, probably my body shape makes it impossible for me to take that exercise any higher up.
Big thumbs up for a cat :). Gorgeous After watching it again and actually listening to what you had to say I say big thumb up for a content as well. Good information and surely food for thought designing a training plan.👍
Sorry about your golfer's Devin! At least the good news is that while you are recovering from that, your rows will get stronger so your pulls should be maintained - or may even improve when you get back at it 💪🏿
Brilliant. Perfect explanation and endorsement. Liked & subbed. Looking forward to more wisdom, as this really is gold. By the way, you have an interesting and natural voice; why not consider narrating as a side hustle. Just a thought.
Had to re-watch this part at 2:20 you say "training for speed" then your cat comes flying past 😂
🐈💫🥰🤣
Pull ups,Dips,Rows,Push ups,and Squats. All Body weight only. Works for Me at 63. Peace to All and Good luck on your fitness journey.
@@gerardcooney1810 No hip hinge movement?
Thanks Gerard!! 💪🏿
Looks gd, I'd only add OHP and direct ab work
Do what works for you and keeps you going to the gym!
My exact split, along with hamstring curls and calf raises
Nice to see a real natural physique in action. Thanks for your dedication to teach people the right way to train.
Thanks Madjid! 👊🏿
@@CaliToTheCrowd You're welcome my friend
Rows are one of my favourite exercises with rings! And it did wonders for my back!
100%! Their A1 for building a THICK back!
Pull up chest = lat pull up of your weight
Criminally underrated exercise on this criminally underrated channel
👊🏿
5:20 cat follows the movement with eyes
She's checking my form 😅
loved this video, even most calesthenics people dont relaise how good bdy rows are
IKR!!! Sad really as it is a class exercise 👊🏿
Yep..Bodyweight rows are a great exercise. Calisthenic Movement introduced them to me and they are very useful, especially in a circuit of some sort..
you're right, Duncan! They're an A1 exercise!
LOVE your kitty coach! That cat is a great trainer!
Drill Sergeant Sasha is the reason for 90% of my gains 😅

Any bodybuilder would say pull ups are for the width of the back, while rows are for thickness, they’re complementary.
Amen to this 👊🏿

Sure thing but bodybuilders dont do pull ups because the lat isnt the limiting factor
@@_anon464rows for sure. I got big rear delts. Never Trained them islolated

if you only have the time to perform one, then absolute high quality rows would be my recommendation too.
good hustle, David! 💪🏿

she's a nutter, but yeah she's not bad 😅
Literally still do these as my row just with 11.25kg attached to me, I love them!

one arm rows on suspension trainers/rings are also underrated

happy to see more ppl like u discussing body weight rows and very underrated

Excellent and well reasoned presentation.
Body weight rows are helping me get better at pull ups
Thank you. Precise and quick to explain.
no problem 👊🏿
Great video! Brilliantly explained. Thank you my Hebrew brother. Liked and subscribed. Stay blessed. Shalom
Welcome to the Cali Crowd! 👊🏿
Dude you have amazing physique! Well done!
haha cheers 💪🏿
Do you have to pull to your belly like a bent over row or pulling to chest is ok?
Pull to your belly
Pulling to the chest will still be great - this is the normal bodyweight row. But as you get more advanced, pulling to the waist line is a great progression
Very informative and refreshed mobility of the upper and core muscle of the body.
Like your teaching style, and those suggestions sound useful for when I'm stronger. Thank you!
Gorgeous cat, too. :-)
Thank you! And yeah she's a great cat! 🐈
Thanks Andrew, I picked up BW rows again after a long time :) They ARE great
100% - I don't know any other horizontal pulling exercise that feels the same 💪🏿
Best body weight row vid I’ve seen in a while. Thank you.
Cheers Ryan! Glad you liked it! 💪🏿
If you aren't doing full front lever rows in a 200 lb fatsuit... You still have plenty of room to progress on rows.
😂😂😂😂
Don't forget the 400KG ankle weights... on EACH ankle 😅
I mean like, just the full ROM front lever pullup to "touch" will keep most people busy for a while even after they get the full FL
Love your setup 😍👍
Literally the pride of my home gym 😅
excellent information, andrew. i've been doing inverteds on rings, and will keep these points in mind now.
Glad you liked it, Bruce!! And yeah bring on the gains! 💪🏿

This video is the best arguement for including bodyweight rows
100% 💪🏿
This is really well said
Thank you 💪🏿

Thanks Jaxon! 👊🏿
Horizontal inverted rows are a beginning gymnastic prep for real (chest to bar) pullups.

hi Adam! I have a video incoming on connective tissue and golfer's elbow will have a section it that video so watch this space 👊🏿

It’s because of the rows and all its variations, I was able to do pull ups.
I was saying to anyone who would listen that they were ‘sleeping on this’
Spot on! Rows are just A1! 💪🏿
Neglect...to our own peril
Yup!
Can you please do a video on pseudo planche push-ups?I think they are hard to do with perfect form and very useful
incoming soon 👊🏿
Australian pull-ups or inverted rows
Andrew Lind my name very similar good to meeting you
Welcome to the Cali Crowd 💪🏿

Turning my back on calisthenics for a while was a bad idea. Started doing weighted pullups and dips a few months ago and progress is coming steadily

Yes, they are harder
Your cat is beautiful!
Yup! And she knows it! She gets away with almost anything 😅
I want to see your cat do workout 😄
I'll have to get Drill Sergeant Sasha to go a follow along soon 😅
Inverted rows
Are they harder than pull ups? Fuck no.
Tim. You'll probably find more people that can do pull ups than fully horizontal, chest to bar bodyweight rows 🤷🏾♂️
Harder than pull ups 😂😂😂
