All are originally written for violin and guitar except the last one “Sonata per la grand viola” 00:38:07. Paganini performed well on violin, viola and guitar.
@@peterlo9123 I thought I knew some of these wonderful compositions were for violin. Many thanks for confirming this. (I had them as 'fill-in' pieces on a cd of violin concertos (but I no loner have the cd!)
Main reason: usually violists were violinists who couldnt play the violin well, so they sometimes played viola parts (because those parts were easier and violist also were always lacking in number). This caused people to consider the viola an instrument that had poor or bad tone and always sounded out of tune. This is a fact, not a legend. Somewhere between the XIX and XXth centuries a good violinist, Lionel Tertis, decided to become a good violist. The made an arrangenment of Elgar's Cello Concerto and this proved to the world that the viola has a good sound - if played by good hands. He is considered the first viola virtuoso, at least a full time violist (my respect). The second viola virtuoso was William Primrose. Hard to tell who was the greatest. What we can say is that they had different, almost opposing styles The jokes never died, though. I like viola jokes, and I like the viola sound better than the violin's. I would like to play in two orchestras, a violinist in one and a violist in another. In my opinion, when a violinist first tries to play a viola, he: 1) wants to learn it more; or 2) starts to say more viola jokes. It depends on how sucesful was his attempt to play it.

Is this the original instrumentation or is it transcribed? It’s gorgeous and the viola part sounds pretty doable.

Why is the viola so badly spoken? Can't understand, beautiful sound
