Just a small correction Arch, but the Paladin doesn't have to kill all 666 Daemons. He just has to kill one OF 666 specific Daemons. He is also given their true name first so he has a greater advantage than he would otherwise have.

As both a fan and player of Chaos and Space Wolves, I should despise the Grey Knights. However, I can't help but love how ridiculously over the top many of the aspects of them are.
Personally, I like to think that by being some of the few that can master use of the warp without being consumed by it, Grey Knights only pretend to be about controlling Chaos when they really just want to smack down the competition so no demons or anyone else can achieve their level of warp mastery. In other words, they actually are Chaos Space Marines that see service to the Imperium of Man as the best way to achieve their goal of eventually dominating the Warp themselves! :)

In earlier 40k editions it used to be: 4+ to hit as cultist, 5+ to wound with a laser pistol and after a failed 3+ armor test you are dead. Unfortunatly this happend like every game and not once in 10000 years 😄
I doubt a mortal human has ever slain a Grey Knight in direct combat. By performing sabotage, setting off nuclear charges or some other indirect way, maybe a horde of a hundred thousand crazed cultists, each one holding a melta weapon, enough would get through to finally do damage (Grey Knights are too badass in-lore to be brought down by a single melta blast or a melta bomb) it could happen and probably has at least once, but a standard mortal human/mutant charging in with a chainsword and laspistol... I do not see that happening at all.

They are ment to fight demons and will not be send in on there own to cleanse a corrupted hive city with millions of cultists in it. If there are dozens of gray knight paladins (if not more assuming casualties) who have all bannished all of those greater demons, it kinda suggests that these demons are getting out of the warp on a fairly regular basis. That kill 666 specific demon's task seems kinda silly, there is just too many things that could prevent even the greatest of Grey knights from completing it. What if the final demon on the list keeps on getting killed by other imperial forces while the aspiring paladin is at the other end of the Galaxy? What if they simply get fed up of being killed and decide to stay in the Warp for a few thousand years. A better version of this task would be if the aspiring paladin had a list of the names of a few thousand demons (or even tens/hundreds of thousands) and had to kill 666 of those demons.
Imagine a Grey Knight spending 400 years hunting down a specific demon only to find out that it was destroyed by a Culexian Assassin 500 years ago and they didn’t know to tell the Grey Knights about it.
The 666 is just because GW has to keep it edgelord for the Christian community, that kind of religious symbolism and ideology was a MUCH bigger deal in past decades, like 10-20 years ago you'd see angels fighting demons and the fear of the devil in a lot of movies. There has to be FAR more then 666 demons in that book, because if each has around a 100 years of respawn time, there couldnt be more then 1 paladin every 100 years or so MINIMUM. Imagine after banishing 665 demons a guardsmen kill steals the last 1 so the the poor naked guy have to wait a full respawn must be quite the sight. Also I imagine that when they pop up again in the galaxy they must have some sign like their name turning red in the pages of the book (i would love a respawn timer on the right upper corner of the book next to their name).

Well actually just because it takes a thousand years on there and to get out doesn't mean a thousand years past it in reality because they're in the warp could take a thousand years for them and less than a couple of months of actually passed in reality

The way you described meeting with the demon for the hunt was good, I imagine it more like the Kool-Aid man busting in the wall and dragging away the demon father to kill him, while his poor demon wife and demon children cry out In fear. But breaking it down to being just another Tuesday is absolutely amazing.
Now I'm no lore master, but the Grey Knights have been a favorite of mine since I was introduced to them. The armor scheme tickled my pickle, and while I was learning more about them, it struck me as a kind of ultimate sacrifice. To be one of the scarcest beings in the universe, qualifying for the astartes, a psyker, being the epitome of incorruptibility and loyalty. The absolute peak of human development, and then voluntarily relinquishing 'you'. All the testing, training, blood, and sweat to basically sharpen a sword that you won't swing. Tldr, everything that you put into being a grey knight wiped away to be something like an astartes servitor. Now this could be a misunderstanding on my part, total head canon, but it just scratches the grim dark itch that proper 40k satiates so well.

I've heard that a gray knight once simply "sat" on top of the demonic tome during his second quest. While he was doing that, he also noted every one of it's words down, analyzing and evaluating it.
As always! I really enjoy listening to your stories of all the fun and wonderful things in the 40k universe! But one thing in today's story that I have to point out (as a fan of the Gray Knights).. The candidate will hunt down and banish *one* of the six hundred and sixty-six most powerful Daemons to ever manifest in the mortal realm, armed only with his Nemesis Force Sword and the beast's true name, gleaned from the pages of the Iron Grimoire.
This is of course ignoring the first and most important quest involving pushing the like button, subscribing and setting notifications to all so you never miss a stream. Many poor souls never complete this quest.
The 8 Quests is still easier than getting back on Kibscord! I was right. Rittenhouse was an innocent hero. BLM Bubble Butters was wrong. Let me back on!

Knowing a Daemons real name is the old Rumpelstiltskin trope, So basically a greater daemon has been around so long and lied to every mortal they ever met about their name, that even they may have forgotten it to protect themselves. Hence the cheesy OP stunlock they get when they hear it again.

grey knights are space marines who are expert at killing daemons, other than that they are slightly better than the rest custodes arent comparable to space marines, they are much more powerful in every regard

Seeing as it may take a thousand years to complete all the tasks, I don't think all the GK Paladins did it at the same time....but that would suck to learn your brother already killed that one & now it has a 1000 year respawn timer.
@@Hellfire918 If there are *dozens* of paladins, it takes a millenium for ONE to achieve the status, and the entire order has only been in existence since the final moments of Horus Heresy in M31, there has to be something missing. To get a single dozen of paladins would take 12 thousand years, and M31 was only 11 thousand years ago in current canon age.
Regarding the power of a daemon's name, even disregarding the legions of guards, would it really be a simple as walking up and going "Hey Bealzebub, time to go home"? I remember listening to a Grey Knights audio drama (can't remember the title, but it was about banishing Mortarion and the rise of Kaldor Draigo) where it was implied that knowing a Daemon's name entailed serious risk to the mortal who knew it? IIRC the name was planted in the mind of the Supreme Grand Master whilst being buried in layers of psychic obfuscation. It therefore required the Knight in question to psychicly force the name directly into the daemon's mind in order for it to have effect. Would this explain some of the plot holes in so far as daemon's names holding ridiculous power?
You know, i still think that a better way to deal with those 666 greater demons is to send in a couple culexus assassins. They at least are able to actually kill the greater demon. All a grey knight can do is banish the demon back into the warp and that's nice and all, but it's just not comparable to killing it. Have the trial for the grey knight be to track down the greater demon and clear the way for the culexus. Much more efficient.
I've been playing Deamon Hunters. An XCOM like game based in 40k where you play as a squad of grey knights. The paladin is a class you unlock later in the game. Sadly it kinda sucks. I hope they buff it soon. Majority of my squads are made of a librarian for mass teleport, an interceptor for critical hits and a justicar to spam honor of the chapter so the interceptor gets more actions. In the game there's a random event that can occur. One of your knights may get the quest to become a pld. If you accept he will go away for a few weeks and when he comes back, he is a pld. The sad part is because the class is rather weak, I don't want certain knights to switch classes.
Grey Knights and Custodes are so far above anything but champions of the Astartes, Saints and such for each and every one. I love their astics and psyker skills.

They are getting out of the warp on a fairly regular basis just because it's a thousand years to get out of the warp on their end only a year could have passed in reality because of the whole time dilation thing
It could take at least a deamon 100 years to get back out maybe 50 if really lucky
The idea of having a greater daemon lead them makes cultists rock hard, so summoning one is the primary goal for them.

That kill 666 specific demon's task seems kinda silly, there is just too many things that could prevent even the greatest of Grey knights from completing it. What if the final demon on the list keeps on getting killed by other imperial forces while the aspiring paladin is at the other end of the Galaxy? What if they simply get fed up of being killed and decide to stay in the Warp for a few thousand years.
A better version of this task would be if the aspiring paladin had a list of the names of a few thousand demons (or even tens/hundreds of thousands) and had to kill 666 of those demons.
Imagine a Grey Knight spending 400 years hunting down a specific demon only to find out that it was destroyed by a Culexian Assassin 500 years ago and they didn’t know to tell the Grey Knights about it.
Sometimes Warhammer lore gets carried away, that's for sure.
It is because Arch made a mistake. He doesn't have to kill 666 different daemons, he just has to kill one OF 666 Daemons. Just one of them.
The 666 is just because GW has to keep it edgelord for the Christian community, that kind of religious symbolism and ideology was a MUCH bigger deal in past decades, like 10-20 years ago you'd see angels fighting demons and the fear of the devil in a lot of movies.
So yeah I call BS too, like how the fuck does that number stay current and accurate??? They can't even stay in touch properly when Tyranids are eating a PLANET....the fuck are the Imperium going to keep up with minor details like the lifespan and travails of warp entities??!? Far better they could have an innumerable list of prime targets, and if any demon does something noteworthy like corrupt a really noble individual or lead a successful incursion, via interrogation of cultists and collaterals, they could get a lead and attempt to follow the bastard scourge who's CURRENTLY causing issues. There has to be FAR more then 666 demons in that book, because if each has around a 100 years of respawn time, there couldnt be more then 1 paladin every 100 years or so MINIMUM. Imagine after banishing 665 demons a guardsmen kill steals the last 1 so the the poor naked guy have to wait a full respawn must be quite the sight. Also I imagine that when they pop up again in the galaxy they must have some sign like their name turning red in the pages of the book (i would love a respawn timer on the right upper corner of the book next to their name).

Now I'm no lore master, but the Grey Knights have been a favorite of mine since I was introduced to them. The armor scheme tickled my pickle, and while I was learning more about them, it struck me as a kind of ultimate sacrifice. To be one of the scarcest beings in the universe, qualifying for the astartes, a psyker, being the epitome of incorruptibility and loyalty. The absolute peak of human development, and then voluntarily relinquishing 'you'. All the testing, training, blood, and sweat to basically sharpen a sword that you won't swing. Tldr, everything that you put into being a grey knight wiped away to be something like an astartes servitor. Now this could be a misunderstanding on my part, total head canon, but it just scratches the grim dark itch that proper 40k satiates so well.

Knowing a Daemons real name is the old Rumpelstiltskin trope, So basically a greater daemon has been around so long and lied to every mortal they ever met about their name, that even they may have forgotten it to protect themselves. Hence the cheesy OP stunlock they get when they hear it again.

Its another reason why they are virtually imprisoned on Terra. You can keep recruiting Grey Knights as long as alpha level pyskers as still able to be found among the ordinary astartes.

I don't think the math works out here, if there are dozens of GK paladins and the 666 demons are the same each time and banishment removes their access to the material world for a thousand years... How exactly could all of the dozens accomplish their task?
Seeing as it may take a thousand years to complete all the tasks, I don't think all the GK Paladins did it at the same time....but that would suck to learn your brother already killed that one & now it has a 1000 year respawn timer.
@@Hellfire918 If there are *dozens* of paladins, it takes a millenium for ONE to achieve the status, and the entire order has only been in existence since the final moments of Horus Heresy in M31, there has to be something missing. To get a single dozen of paladins would take 12 thousand years, and M31 was only 11 thousand years ago in current canon age.
Regarding the power of a daemon's name, even disregarding the legions of guards, would it really be a simple as walking up and going "Hey Bealzebub, time to go home"?
I remember listening to a Grey Knights audio drama (can't remember the title, but it was about banishing Mortarion and the rise of Kaldor Draigo) where it was implied that knowing a Daemon's name entailed serious risk to the mortal who knew it? IIRC the name was planted in the mind of the Supreme Grand Master whilst being buried in layers of psychic obfuscation. It therefore required the Knight in question to psychicly force the name directly into the daemon's mind in order for it to have effect.
Would this explain some of the plot holes in so far as daemon's names holding ridiculous power?
You know, i still think that a better way to deal with those 666 greater demons is to send in a couple culexus assassins. They at least are able to actually kill the greater demon. All a grey knight can do is banish the demon back into the warp and that's nice and all, but it's just not comparable to killing it. Have the trial for the grey knight be to track down the greater demon and clear the way for the culexus. Much more efficient.

I've been playing Deamon Hunters. An XCOM like game based in 40k where you play as a squad of grey knights. The paladin is a class you unlock later in the game. Sadly it kinda sucks. I hope they buff it soon. Majority of my squads are made of a librarian for mass teleport, an interceptor for critical hits and a justicar to spam honor of the chapter so the interceptor gets more actions.
In the game there's a random event that can occur. One of your knights may get the quest to become a pld. If you accept he will go away for a few weeks and when he comes back, he is a pld. The sad part is because the class is rather weak, I don't want certain knights to switch classes.
Calling it now...it's Primarch Zero. That's the one that's been imprisoned in that mountain.
