We do have an entire novel showing the Marines Malevolent dealing with rebellion populations. In the Iron Kingdom we get a very good in depth look into the minds of the Marines Malevolent, as they are the main force under the Admiral of the fleet.
They are utilitarian and pragmatic to the utter extreme, they do not view civilians even as living things but as obstacles in the pursuit of the enemy at absolute best. Killing them is not a matter of being assholes, although they fully are, it's a matter of getting rid of inconvenient problems more than anything else.
While there are some that fully are assholes and hate themselves, that's always due to them being compared to more "honorable" chapters, which of course would make them bitter and angry. Just look at Captain Vilian, making the right call only to be beaten by a Chapter Master who considers himself above his tactics.
The Iron Kingdom is a bad book, make no mistake, but those chapters that show the Marines Malevolent in action and thought are very good for understanding the Chapter. Shame Arch didn't include any of this.
Another thing he got wrong was the story with the Black Templars. He did not antagonize him because he hated him, because he was petty, he did not antagonize the Black Templars because he cared two shits about his honor or to be an asshole. He antagonized him to give himself a legitimate reason to kill him and take his gear without the other Black Templars interfering. He specifically says to his brothers that he didn't care about the trophy or the honor of the kill, he traded one bolt round for new armor pieces and a very fine sword.
The Marines Malevolent are 100% assholes, but it is not because they want to be assholes, it's because they don't care about other people's feelings or civilians, nor do they care about anything but bringing their hate to the enemy as often and as constantly as possible. A Marine Malevolent can 100% be friendly to you, just constantly resupply him and his brothers, tell him where the nearest enemy is, stay out of his way and don't bother him about petty things such as civilian casualties or honor and you'll be his best friend.

    So a few things;
    1. I think the Marines Malevolent are somewhat Night Lords…. But also Death Guard.
We know that several chapters - even those likely related to those of… Heretical origin - can share geneseed from multiple legions.
The Carcharodons are a good example.
We know they primarily run Raven Guard geneseed thanks to their partnership with the Raven Guard Legion Exiles.
But we also know they likely have some Night Lord geneseed due to their encounters with the Night Lords in their books.
There is also a likely speculation that they have World Eater geneseed mixed in there too.
And it’s reasonable to maybe see why. A chapter that’s out at the edge of the imperial forever fighting and only supplied with the most minimum of resupply every few decades when one of their fleets return to inner imperial space, that they’re are likely chances they have been traded non-standard geneseed by potentially outside means - be it through raid/claims on heretical forces/chapters - or through deals with black shields not apart of the imperiums watch.
Now, think of the Marines Malevolent. Veterans of multiple veterans taken from what we know to be loyalist Death Guards and even Night Lords… a combined force of them and personality does make them quite in line.
    2. I do not suspect a Hive World is their homeworld, but a Penal World.
It would make sense for their idea of fighting until death meaning penitence, but would also again link to the Night Lords/Death Guards theory.
And… it would explain their attitudes too.
Instead of being raised on Imperial/Astartes ideals from birth, they are raised on Penal ones.
Life is but nothing on penal worlds and the rough life expectancy - even for those born on them - it could be interesting.
    3. Link to the 2nd idea is that maybe the reason they replenish so quickly and aren’t up to the fullest of standards of other chapters or even Astartes when it comes to their prowess on occasion.
Is that a number of their chapter isnt made from gene inserts but like Luther and many of the old legions, enhancements that give them a common par but never better.
But more, it would explain how a chapter can be founded so quickly in an age of limited recruits and veterans and geneseed, that a small number were bread from said geneseed, but a majority are but enhanced to be not but youths/men given chance to repent their sins through service as astartes.

    • @ragnarian
      @ragnarian 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

When you say they've got night lord/world water mixed in, do you mean they've got some guys from world eater genestock, some from night lords and the rest raven guard
Or do you mean their Geneseed has been spliced with nightlord/world eaters
Cos both are possible in my opinion, it'd be odd to find raven guard that are so similar to world eaters without having some spliced in rather than just cultural assimilation

Your first one, that it’s Raven Guard, Night Lord and World Eater stock.
As for the fighting system of the Carcharodons it actually based on the RG exiles.
The Raven Guard before Corax got them actually fought in pretty much a similar fashion to the Carcharodons, by infiltrating forward and then rushing in in full on slaughter.
It was why Corax exiled them as he completely saw them as unable to work with his sons of Deliverance - and the fact that during several occasion during working with Horus during the great crusade they took his brothers side (including perts) in frontal assaulting fortresses vs conducting a Corax like lighting assault.

There's a book based chapter (I don't recall their name) who were admitted by the author to be based on their own Loyalist Luna Wolves geneseed concept. The books don't say it outright though.
The Soul Drinkers are of unknown providence, likely traitor genes. (They recently came back as Primaris marines made from the same unknown source)
The brass armour wearing Minotaurs chapter has so many Iron Warrior traits it's concerning.
The list goes on, there are plenty of potential examples. The Space Sharks or the Red Scorpions, the Exorcists and even the Grey Knights (who potentially use hybridised geneseed of their founder marines, for the Emperor is not an Astartes nor primarch and could not have provided organoids he does not possess - Big E likely put his own custom genetic code into the progenoid glands of the founder GKs intead.)

It caused the degeneration, genetic mutation, it's why Fabious Bile has to constantly make a new body for himself. As his genetic stock is still the damaged ones and both he and his primarch could not save it. It's also why Fabious went to go rescue the "pure" and untainted geneseed ship that was lost. Also, the Raven Guard's geneseed was corrupted, it was caused by attempts to rapid grow new Marines and new Seed Stock during the HH and resulted in the raven mutants (literally human/raven looking beastment with astartes level powers). The "corvus" pattern marine helmet (beakie) was designed by Corvus Corax to allow his mutants to hide their mutation and wear a helmet. Literally, in the lore.
The founder of the Grey Knights was a redeemed T-Sun. The gene seed for the GKs is T-Sun that has been "fixed" by the Emperor and enhanced making them even more powerful than the T-Suns.
It's pretty much accepted lore that there are traitor foundings and chapters even to the modern period in the Imperium.

Really the only reason people hate them and Love the Space Sharks is because 1. They don’t have a book to flesh them out, and 2. Salamander and Black Templar fans have a big hate boner for em
Sacrifice 4000 civilians in a Refugee camp to kill Double the number of orks. Makes sense so no Space Marines or Guardsmen die.

It could be argued that the Marines Malevolent sin is saying the quiet part out loud. That unlike other Chapters or Organizations in the IoM, the MM know the reality of their galaxy and will do what ever it takes to protect/save the IoM. No matter who must suffer and die, as long as Mankind/EoM/IoM survives is all that matters. In fact the only real problem it seems that people have with the MM is their cold and callus nature. If they said they didn't like being this cold and cruel. But that it was necessary as per the EoM command they are to defeat His enemies and protect/preserve his empire no matter what it takes. That if given the choice they wouldn't sacrifice civilians, but they are not in a war that lets them have such 'choices'. So they do what they must, as all other Astarte's do in His service. I would say some evidence suggest the MM maybe of hybrid Gene-seed. Though based on Arches description of the MM, they sound a lot like the Carcharodon's. Who are also an ancient Chapter founded just after the HH, the are known for their brutality having no compunction murdering entire systems to make a point/punish the wicked (in fact they along with Minotaur's are the go to Chapter the High Lords of Tera against send against renegade Chapters), they are known for their red and grey tithes, they are fleet based/forever on Crusade, they are known for their ancient and acquainted war gear. They are usually under supplied and have to do their gear/aspirate raids. Because they are usually on Crusade at the extreme and sometimes beyond the Astronomican, far from the IoM and its forge worlds. They also said their the founder was sent away and his sons work to restore lost honor. Though unlike the MM, the Carcharodon's actually look like Night Lords, with the same gene seed flaw as the Raven Guard.

The female space marine take was in adeptus ridiculous, a podcast series where he teaches a, then, 40k newbie the lore of 40k through reading and summarizing the wiki.
His female space marine take wasn't directed at the problems of it. Nothing about how you have male & female exclusive factions, nothing about the woke tactic where they have to diversify everything to give a certain image, nothing about how it goes against the lore etc.
But he did state he personally wasn't a fan of female space marines, because Games Workshop created the sisters of battle and they made a unique version of the female space marine, without just copy pasting it for diversity.
I believe he made that take during the "MAKING A SPACE MARINE: RECRUITMENT, CREATION, PAIN | Warhammer 40k Lore" video.
And if you have seen his other content with an analytical eye (like that video) you can see from his tone & wording, that he is pretty damm woke. Or scared for being cancelled, which is about the same.
