    This is THE BEST video for changing a Dakota fuel pump correctly. Thank you very much for posting it.

    Cutting an access panel in the bed is the very easiest way to change the assembly. They do make a pump and inner basket kit that’s so much cheaper than an entire assembly. Thanks for sharing 😊

    UPDATE: The bolts holding my bed on my 99 Dakota were rusted tight. Even after sitting in PB Blaster overnight & hitting them with heat the head on the first one snapped off. My truck has a bedliner. Took linner out, cut hole, changed pump, used some scrap & self tapping screws to put the piece I cut out back in sealed with alum duct tape, put bedliner back in. Less than 30 minutes.

There was some water in it & more junk than I would of thought, good thing I did. Had problems with fill hose, connectors & every freakin thing else DUE TOO WHERE I LIVE. Had to buy new tank straps also, they didn't look that bad but WTH WHILE I'M THERE. GREAT VID. AS ALWAYS MARTIN & GREAT JACK TIPS. Did this about 6 years ago on my 98 durango, pump was little different, durango has 25 gallon, frame is wider. Pump was dead tank was full. I jacked it down poured into cans. when tank was empty I put a drain like you use on trany, down low to the front for next time. Going back together I forgot gasket, been six years never had a leak or smell. I see my 2001 durango has skid plate under tank.

    Hey was watching this to see something with the kota and noticed you have a rear view camera installed....what camera did you install on it? I know on the full sized trucks they have cameras that go where the tailgate handle it and they also send you a new rearview mirror with the camera built in...is there anything like that for the Dakota's and durangos?

    One thing I learned at my new job, for seals and tight fitting parts, get a tub of transmission grease...it dissolves...we use that for everything at the shop. It's also good for hard to get to bolts for installing and removing...put a little bit of the grease in your socket and fit it over the bolt and done. Transmission grease dissolves in just about anything so it's easy to clean off

    You may consider getting another Bosch fuel pump and storing it. Unfortunately they have stopped making fuel pumps for XJ’s I even called them and confirmed this so it may not be a bad idea to get another one for the Dakota.

    I might change the pump on my 00 Dakota, hard start. But I'm not sure if something else could be causing it, and the plugs look good too. Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

    • @martinbuilt

      try cycling the ignition switch on for several seconds and off at least four times and see if it starts right up. If so the anti flow back valve is the problem, same as my truck.

      I'm planning on changing the front and rear axle to 3.92 gears with a Posi in the gears. I have purchased the axle.
      I also want to actually convert it to a full time 4WD.
      WJ will always have projects going on with it. I am building a performance engine for the WJ.

    My 92 Dodge Dakota 3.9 keeps dying as if it’s running out of gas. I put a new fuel pump in it sometimes it’ll start and run for a little while maybe 15-20 minutes then it dies. it looks like the seals where the hose goes into the tank for filling it are cracked really bad is that my problem. Please help I’m out of money and I need the structure run badly.

    Does the low fuel light come if fuel pump goes bad. Also says low gas on the trip meeter. Is that normal for bad fuel pump

    • @martinbuilt
      @martinbuilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think the low fuel light has anything to do with a bad fuel pump. It could have something to do with a bad sender.

    • @martinbuilt

      Yeah, perhaps what you could do is remove the bolt on the left side of the box and loosen the ones on the right side and then Prop up the left side of the Box and replace the assembly that way.

    My guy it's much easier just to take the bed bolts along with the filler neck off and raise the bed. It takes about a hour or so doing it that way and you don't have to worry about how much fuel is in the tank

  • @Kolonol1
    @Kolonol1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is one I will thankfully never have to do for a fuel pump lol
    I cut a hole right over the pump. In a truck bed, just cut a piece of sheet metal about an inch bigger than the hole and you can use sheet metal brakes to bend the metal to match the contour of the metal you removed. You can screw it in, weld it in...whatever....and it looks like it was made that way...I don't drop tanks very much lol

  • @0101018888
    @0101018888 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I personally loosen and tilt the bed when replacing fuel pump. I think it's easier. To each his own whatever rocks your boat.
