First off, nice video & 2ndly, all you just did was wire the switch backwards with the two power outputs coming from 2 sources! I did this with my motorcycle's undergrowth led pods! It's nice to be able to control how & when something works! Again nice & easy to follow video!

@@shijansantos You can run it to the battery negative or you can ground it to a chassis ground, which ever is easiest to you. It just needs to be a ground. Thanks for watching!

I did mine on a relay so if I put it in reverse they would be switched on and off automatically with the high beams. Foreward off-road lights are similar, but with the ability to disable them with a dash rocker as well as off with low beam.
@@RockyXTV planning on installing some flush mounts to rear bumper of 2007 Ram pickup Want to wire them to a 2 position “ON-ON” 3-way old school metal flip switch and wire them also to the cargo lights my concern is do I have to run and use a relay also I ask because The Cargo lights have a switch in the cab which may allow me to turn AUX lights on from inside the cab using cargo light switch the plan is to use the Aux lights when reversing or line up to trailer at nighttime but not necessarily be on with my reverse bulbs as I have led ones in my tail lights with plenty of light for normal situations in parking spots not so much for trailering/towing The 3-Way 2-position “ON-ON” switch I’m thinking of using will be mounted somewhere close to my hitch under rear bumper and Plan is to have the first “ON” position so AUX lights function with cargo lamp switch in cab but I can use the other “ON” position to flip lights on from back of truck if disconnecting trailer or need light behind truck so I don’t need an off function on my switch Have 7pin trailer plug in in the back of truck so my hot to battery and grounds can be wired off of it 1) do I need a relay to wire lights up in this manner 2) can I run my wires to my cargo lamp hot wire that is behind cargo lamp outside of the cab with T-Taps to not have to wire all the way inside cab up to the cargo lamp switch 3) can I grab from 12v hot from my 7pin or should I run my hot all the way up to battery
Great Video; I will be installing this set up this week. My question just to make sure; if I wanted the switch to 'throw' the opposite as what you showed (down is in tandem with stock back up lights) I just install the switch in dash that way...wiring stays the same....yeah...makes sense...
Great VIDEO! Thank you!! I have only one question though... as I am confused about the "orange" wiring. When talking about the switch, you discuss orange going to pin 8 on one end and to the battery (for constant on availability and switch light remaining on if switch is grounded) or to fuse box (for ignition on activation) . MAKES sense on both senarios. THEN regarding the relay... you note that orange is connected to pin 30 and then back to the battery. SO... will there be TWO orange wires connecting directly to the battery... one to switch and one to relay? THANKS

Perfect timing for his video! I just bought a Globex Performance rear license plate mount thing on my 2016 jeep renegade... I am using Rigid Radiance. I wired the red ambients as a third (fourth?) brake light. I am working on figuring out which is the reverse light so I can tap into to get the same functionality as this from my relay. One question, is there any difference with a 6 pin switch?
It would depend on the brand of switch, MOST of the time manufacturers stick to a universal pin layout as to make all switches the same, but sometimes you get a company that just doesn't follow the rules. I would just reference the pin numbers in this video and see if they match up to the pins on your switch because with a 6 pin, I THINK it's just another ground pin. I cant see the switch, supposedly if i use a 7 pin dpdt and use one side so it acts as a spdt, do i still connect the wires to the pin number like in this video? (7 to ground, 8 to battery or dash, 2 to 86 in the relay and 3 to the tapped positive of the reverse light)

You say that you ran power from battery to the switch and power from battery to the relay, but when you hook up the power to battery, you only have one wire. Did you pull power from somewhere else to the switch or something?

Idk if you have a video for this question but I want to add a dual color (white and amber) light bar to my 4runner spoiler and my plan is to have it like this where the white turns on with the reverse and also have it turn on with a switch but now my problem is how can I wire the light bar where I can also turn the amber on with a separate switch. So pretty much the light bar has 2 color and I would like to have each color its own switch and also have the white turn on when I hit reverse, is that possible?
May I ask help from you? I purchased the exact switch you demonstrated and connected it to two 7" LED's in my pickup exactly the way you demonstrated., everything worked for about two weeks then the manually controlled backup LED's quit working. They work in R, but not when I want to turn them on independently. I have checked and rechecked the connections, all are ok. I have checked the continuity in the switch, this is what I found: Switch Top press in, continuity only between pens 7 & 8. Middle switch in neural, no continuity in any of the pins. Switch bottom press in, continually only between pins 8 & 2. I don't know what this means. I don't know if the switch failed. Can you somehow give me some pointers to fix this issue? Just added more info for you. The power supply for the SPDT switch is supplied by another switch and this is connected to SAPDT pin 8, pin 7 ground, center pin to relay 86, bottom left pin to power from reverse lights.
I have a switch with 3 leg switch hot natural and trigger can I splice in to the trigger wire (white) in to my reverse lights and still have it work the same like you did ? Already have a harness
Terrific video and instruction. I want undertake the same installation as you have shown, however, with one addition. I would like to add a switch in the rear of my vehicle that would allow me to turn the rear lights on and off manually. Are you able to help with how I would wire this switch to work with the three position switch at the front. Thanks
You could add another switch to the rear, but it would be independent from the other switch. You would have to turn the lights on and off at the rear. You couldn't turn them on at the rear and then off at the front, or on at the front then off at the rear and so on. Automotive switches and wiring makes it very difficult to replicate a typical "3-way" switch like you would have in your house.
Appreciate this video. I going to hook up the external backup lights to my truck. I was told I probably wouldn’t need to have a relay, but you are using one for these . The lights I’m going to use are 9,000 lumens . Should I be concerned about using a relay?
My aux rear LEDs are very bright. I did not put a switch on them because I know that I would be more than tempted to flip them on to get even when someone is driving behind me with their brights on. Mine come on only when I shift into reverse.

Relay *Pin 30* = Battery + with a fuse, *Pin 85* = Ground, *Pin 86* = + From switch, *Pin 87* = + For Aux lights. As for the switch, pin numbers would vary from switch style & brand. I hope this helps, thanks for watching!

I have watched this video a couple of times, but I am using a different switch which is why I think I am still a little lost. My switch has 6 pins on the back of it and I am trying to do exactly what you have going on to where one position is reverse comes on when in reverse, one for them on without in reverse and one with them off.
Is it possible to make the neutral of the switch (middle) for the lights to come on when reversing. The top push in when you want to use them freely and the bottom to turn them off?
Followed the steps. But when i manually flip thr switch, it doesnt come on. It comes on auto with the reverse and turns off when flip in the middle. Any help? Do i have a bad switch or relay?

Does the green wire runs from the batterie negative side?

If using low Amp draw LED lights you don't HAVE to use a relay as long as your switch can handle the current.

Isnt pin 86 a ground and pin 85 goes to your switch from your relay. Thats how i have my relay/fuse box setup. Just curious
Pins 85 & 86 can be switched either way, no real wrong or right on those. This is just how I've always done them.

The relay is a standard automotive relay, available at any parts store The pins on the relay are numbered.

Switch bottom press in, continually only between pins 8 & 2. I don't know what this means. I don't know if the switch failed. Can you somehow give me some pointers to fix this issue? Just added more info for you. The power supply for the SPDT switch is supplied by another switch and this is connected to SAPDT pin 8, pin 7 ground, center pin to relay 86, bottom left pin to power from reverse lights.
I have a switch with 3 leg switch hot natural and trigger can I splice in to the trigger wire (white) in to my reverse lights and still have it work the same like you did ? Already have a harness
Does the switch turn just the lights on when the key is off?
I already done that kind but little different mode. reverse lights on with auto hazard light on and separate hazard switch for not in reverse mode.
Terrific video and instruction. I want undertake the same installation as you have shown, however, with one addition. I would like to add a switch in the rear of my vehicle that would allow me to turn the rear lights on and off manually. Are you able to help with how I would wire this switch to work with the three position switch at the front. Thanks
You could add another switch to the rear, but it would be independent from the other switch. You would have to turn the lights on and off at the rear. You couldn't turn them on at the rear and then off at the front, or on at the front then off at the rear and so on. Automotive switches and wiring makes it very difficult to replicate a typical "3-way" switch like you would have in your house.

I have some crazy stupid bright reverse lights can you do that to the actual factory reverse light to come on separate with the switch
Appreciate this video. I going to hook up the external backup lights to my truck. I was told I probably wouldn’t need to have a relay, but you are using one for these . The lights I’m going to use are 9,000 lumens . Should I be concerned about using a relay?
Since you are adding direct power to the switch, will it drain thr battery if you leave in the auto position?
There shouldn't be any parasitic draw from the switch alone.

My aux rear LEDs are very bright. I did not put a switch on them because I know that I would be more than tempted to flip them on to get even when someone is driving behind me with their brights on. Mine come on only when I shift into reverse.

I did have it hooked up with a on/off/on switch like you show, but now i need just a 2 position switch rather than a three.

Could you write out the pin numbers for the relay and the switch as a little side note
Relay *Pin 30* = Battery + with a fuse, *Pin 85* = Ground, *Pin 86* = + From switch, *Pin 87* = + For Aux lights. As for the switch, pin numbers would vary from switch style & brand. I hope this helps, thanks for watching!

I got it to work but I’m get buzzing coming from the switch when the reverse lights come on with the aux lights.
No use for a diode with this switch?
I have watched this video a couple of times, but I am using a different switch which is why I think I am still a little lost. My switch has 6 pins on the back of it and I am trying to do exactly what you have going on to where one position is reverse comes on when in reverse, one for them on without in reverse and one with them off.

Is it possible to make the neutral of the switch (middle) for the lights to come on when reversing. The top push in when you want to use them freely and the bottom to turn them off?
Followed the steps. But when i manually flip thr switch, it doesnt come on. It comes on auto with the reverse and turns off when flip in the middle. Any help? Do i have a bad switch or relay?
