  • Silicon is the second most abundant element, it even exists in our own bodies. What do you know about it?
    Without silicon, we would not have come as far as we have regarding technology.
    Silicon is critical in the calculations processors must do daily. Silicon is the second most abundant element on Earth by mass, making up over 27% of the crust. Most of the silicon on Earth is found in the form of silicon oxides like sand and quartz.

  • @haddow777
    @haddow777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seems kind or silly to blame the shortage on silicon. As you said silicon is the second most abundant element on Earth. The reason Silicon is so great in so many of these applications is because it is so abundant, it is very cheap and easy to obtain. Also, a basic fact of physics and elements is, the lower down on the periodic table of elements something is, the more abundant it is in the universe while also being lighter.
    There are probably other elements higher up the periodic table that share traits with silicon, and thus would make a suitable replacement. The problem is the higher you go up the table, the more rare the element is. This is because stars only naturally produce elements in abundance up to Iron. Iron, due to its difficulty in working in fusion processes, is usually what stalls the engine in stars and kills them. Heavier elements get made through other processes, and thus don't get made in anywhere near the abundance as Iron and lower elements.
    This means, any alternative to Silicon is going to be more rare by quite a bit, thus more expensive by quite a bit. Also, it will be heavier. Since it will share a similar profile as Silicon, that is subatomic makeup, it will likely be physically bigger too which wouldn't be great for very small circuits.
    So, it seems silly to think anything else would really be superior to Silicon.

    • @karhukivi
      @karhukivi ปีที่แล้ว

      It is the shortage of silicon metal, which does not occur as the element in nature.

    • @BradHouser
      @BradHouser ปีที่แล้ว

    • @BradHouser

    I don't know how we can say the transistors in processors use low current because a CPU that consumes more that 100 Watts doesn't even reach 2 Volts.

      2 Volts are very high voltage, electrons can jump the insulation on transistor walls...

    • @deang5622
      @deang5622 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100 watts at 2 volts is 50 amps of current.
      50 amps is a *lot* of current.
      But it comes down to the number of transistors on the chip. A chip consuming 100 watts is going to have billions of transistors.
      The current being passed by each individual transistor is going to be very low.

    The idea that the chip shortage demonstrates a need for an alternative to silicon is false. The chip shortage isn't for lack of silicon. Remember, it's the 2nd most abundant element on Earth. Everything went into shortage as governments and people freaked out reducing the work force and tanking economies.
