I got to study with Steve in Canada- Banff. He is a unique musician as alto player, composer and conceptualist. His music is a new cross section. He also played good flute and soprano sax with Dave Holland Quintet.
12:35 is the beginning of one of the best sax solos I have listened to in recent time. Sure this is historic stuff but I only discovered this now! Amazing
I don't normally subscribe to the "this is the best..." or "they're the best..." or "that's the best..." attitude when it comes to music, BUT David Gilmore's guitar solo in this piece starting at 24:26, for me, is really the best solo guitar work I've ever heard. Not least of all is the absence of minor Pentatonic; those same old blues rock riffs we hear over and over again are refreshingly avoided for the most part. The solo is like a statement or declaration broadcast from on high.
whatever else you wanna say about it, it grooves HARD and bruth-huz playing some interesting riffs I SHO AINT HEARD.....wishin i had my shit together to get more out of his workshop at Stanford ....2000? it was all way over my head.. he had his band, a whole crew of monsters there there. oh well maybe i can find one now,,,,that i'm finally getting my shit together.
