I’m so happy to hear this. I’ve only recently gotten into digital realism. What I’ve found out is that... when I paint something just like the reference, I’m actually more vulnerable. From having a sketch base onward. If the guy in the photo has a wide neck or the girl has bigger hands than you’d expect, it looks as though I, being new at this, simply misjudged the proportions. I also had a few cases where faces were not at all symmetrical, from one brow being less arched and looking lower, to the bottom of the upper lip arching higher on the left, to the right eye being 30% less open, and her eyeshadow removed much of the natural shadow along the eyelids as they curve outward along the eyeball. I realized I needed to actually be “‘More true to life,” than the photo if I wanted to really make the eyes look right. They looked weird and flat without those shadows that had been lifted by the model wearing light eyeshadow in the inner third of her eyes. I can go out the reference side by side, or even slide it under my photo, and it becomes apparent in not over-emphasizing, but it’s still not... harmonious. It detracts from the piece. This was problematic for me. I felt realism was capturing the truth of what is there as closely as possible, that the better I got, the closer it would be. So I wondered if this meant I’d actually stray from realism and go into something else. But I think it might just be the difference between a copier and someone who makes art. I wouldn’t call myself an artist yet. But I hope, if I keep on, one day I will be.
What a great way to explain the originality of a painting rather than just a straight copy no matter how amazingly accurate it is. Thank you as always for sharing your thoughts and painting process. I find your videos so inspiring. T x

Well i don't know much about art nor painting. But i believe what you learn is kinda essential for you to progress to a level that you can reflect your art to others. Once you master your skills you can find your own path and bind techniques you learn there to reflect your art. I think Alpay already practiced a lot and now he can ignore things and alternate some of the techniques with his skills and build his own aproach to reflect his art. Of course art has no limits but i don't think what they teach there is irrelevant.

Can you please do an in-depth tutorial on how to paint veins? Also, how can we figure out the positioning of veins and how they're supposed to branch out? I've always been curious about how to paint details like veins but I haven't found many tutorials on this subject.
Studying anatomy is great for many branches of art. If you learn where the veins are, how close to the surface, their structure, you’ll know better how to paint them. This is quite a callback, but I know about four years ago Jazza (Josiah Brooks, has a channel here) put out figure drawing videos and also had an ebook with a ton of reference photos in it and discussed anatomy and muscle groups and the circulatory system, that kind of thing. You can find videos and photos of veins and the general circulatory system online easily enough though. It was very helpful. Especially on older people, muscular people, or large breasts, knowing how transparent the skin should be and how much the veins should show through is important. I’d also recommend portraits of people in those categories of various skin tones, as what you see come through changes depending on the tones on top of it. A mid blue looks different under a yellow filter than under red or green, after all. Just some ideas. It’d be cool if he did a video, of course, but this way if he doesn’t, you have some ideas.

I agree but I also need to say that rules are very good for problem solving. Not adhering to them but rather practicing them enough to know them. 'Drawing what you see' isn't for inspiration or interpretation but it's a very good means of achieving technical acumen. Few people can paint as adeptly or as quickly as what is depicted in this video. It takes a lot of time to develop that kind of confident hand (for most people) I would encourage people to break the rules but break them in the context of actually knowing them.
I would love to see a video showing how you mix your colors, how much paint you mix as well as what viscosity you are looking for. please please please?
What I personally got out of this was to stop trying to imitate and worrying about perfection but focus on self expression. As a perfectionist in art, that’s hard for me to grasp. But I’m sure I’ll be able to get past that. Thanks for the video
Ditto. I can basically only do digital art because I’m too worried I’ll mess a picture up on hour five if it’s IRL. And with realism I thought the point is to draw what’s there! 😅 But each time I got negative feedback, strangely enough, it was stuff that looked odd, but matched the reference. If a guy had a thicker neck than usual or a woman had large or long hands. Or if the face is asymmetrical, brows uneven, lip raised higher on one side, and one eye closed farther. Painting what’s there just served to get me into situations where those things got pointed out. I even digitally slid the reference under my piece and saw I wasn’t exaggerating the features, but even just... acknowledging them was getting me into trouble. It drew focus in a bad way. So I’m still figuring out how far to go from the reference and when it’s important, but since it’s called REALISM, I wasn’t expecting to do that at all. But he’s totally and completely right! Doing what’s there isn’t enough. I figure it’s the difference between a copy and art, but I’m still figuring out how to give myself permission to go off the path to “improve” it. It’s a very odd prospect.
I’ve got a lot of purple and cool tones in my skin tone, self portraits can be annoying due to that. But I like pale cool skin tones too much to not do it. Also, as a tip, some darker skin tones can have a bit or green or a deep red.
I have a question when it comes to how you have your workspace such as what's the best way to keep it uncluttered and what is the best way to prevent messes etc

I love how translucent you've made the skin with subtle shifts in color. Thank you for explaining the process in detail! I do have one question though...as a realism painter, how do you decide what to paint as a body of work, and what is the process like? Do you create small studies/concepts for every piece first, then paint them full-scale after all studies are done? Or do you paint one at a time as the inspiration strikes?

People love watching recordings of real life. We do it all day every day. Me watching this right now is me watching a normal slice of your very ordinary life. Depending on what slice is showing, people will pay a pretty penny. Whats important is that its not your own life that youre watching. Familiarity is what is boring, not realism. also there was plenty of light and shadow in those hands and you painted it. plenty of places where planes turned or gradations occurred. so you weren't just painting colors, you were painting values as well. just because there's not strong directional lighting doesn't mean there's no light and shadow. i saw plenty. if i screencapped this and turned it black and white i would see a lot of value changes
