- Beekeeping tips for the month of June will help you know what you should be doing at this time of the beekeeping season. Beekeepers are asking me if they should requeen their bee hive, if their bees are going to swarm and should they add a honey super or a queen excluder. I'll address these questions and many more.

Green drone comb along with screen bottom boards, powdered sugar dustings, breaking the queen's brood cycle can be used as IPM methods to assist in controlling mites on honey bees. These methods are usually not enough and require the additional treatment of various chemicals.

Keep in mind that when he said add supers in JUNE he is in Illinois. If you are in the south the honey flow is already slowing down. We are in the 90s here in Texas Illinois is in the 70s.

Great information about the time of year. Pick up a huge sworm yesterday to many bees for 1 10 box so they got 2 deep will check them out 6 11.

Hi David, really enjoyed your June Tips. I’ve added a second deep and It’s been about a week since doing so, anxious to see how they’re doing. One thing I wasn’t sure about was the feeding so I will be taking the food away as soon as the weather clears. I did treat for mites organically, but I do need to do an alcohol wash….nervous about that! Thank you for your videos🌸
An alcohol wash is the recommended standard for the best evaluation of your mite level.

I live in Atoka Oklahoma , first bees back in April, I read a LOT on bees plus the internet two TH-cam people. You talk more with the love of bees and (not like a book reader of bees) a person with common sense. Thank you
I had two supercedures cells in late May with larva. I removed them since I am new and did not recognize them as such. Thought they were swarm cells. I added the second brood box at that time. Checked a week later and removed one more with a larva. Had good eggs and larva. inspected a week later. Had good eggs and larva. This time no new queen cells. Added honey super since I had good comb in use on 7 frames. Not sure if I was right or wrong with this new nucleus colony. Open to any comments.
Zero turn mowers are killing the pollinators off!!!These huge areas of grass we are now mowing full of Dutch clover.These large areas are baiting pollinators during mowing seasons.Go look in your own yard right now.These mowers go up to 15 mph old mowers less than 5mph

When that lower x5 is about 80% filled. Take a Frame of Capped Brood (shake off Bees into lower Box. ) Then Add your 2nd Storey x5 Box :
Put that Capped Brood in the Centre position. And Drawn Comb (ideally) OR Foundation Frames... in those other x4 Frame slots. Capped "Brood" will pull Bees UP ! Aka, Baby Bees need nurturing. Or / and tricks them to start "doing more Nectar/Pollen/soon to be Laid up by the Queen... Do same on 3rd Storey ! Then do some Splits ! Using x5 Box with x2 Dummy Boards (Foam Board with Timber Topbar !) Makes x5, a cosy "x3 Framer".... to start Cosy, and grow Bigger ! (On removing x1 Dummy Board at a time. And adding more Capped Brood from another spare Colony : This keeps Population up... as older bees die off, while Babies are Bred...! And other Colonies.... are taken from, have more space, less likely to Swarm. Win, win. All around. 😎

I have found that if I bottom super... the bees will move the honey from the full top super to the empty bottom super, keeping it close to the top of the brood.
I had to get 2 queens after a failed split. Both hives had Queen cells capped but the weather etc the queens did not come back.
Can you use a super during a dearth? I've had one on for over 2 weeks and they haven't drawed them all out.
I am in Northern Ireland here we are having rough climate still in June

Yuppers, no one should just consume sugar 😄 Nectar from flowers contain proteins from the pollen grains that are in nectar which bees gather.
Hi David, I’m a new beekeeper starting this year, I’ve signed up for your ultimate coarse, I’m glad i did your videos are excellent I still have a couple more to do. I have a question hope you can answer, we got our nuc the beginning of May this last inspection they have drawn out not quite 8 frames I added a 2nd deep, my concern is they are building a lot of drone comb on the bottom of the frames, and not drawing out the green drone comb. They are just about to the screened bottom board and it’s the 4 frames in the middle any advice would be appreciated. NW Illinois
Thank you for purchasing my ultimate course. I would suggest that you wax those frames as I showed in this video, that might help them draw them out faster. As far as the drone comb it’s just that time of the year when bees are raising more drones for reproduction purposes. You can also try and move the green drone comb closer but yet on the outside of the brood nest area. Change its position.

I would like to be able to purchase the winter bee kind in a patty form rather than the hive lid, because I have a non-traditional hive. I don't see it as an option in your store.
if I stop feeding when I add honey supers will they still draw out the comb to put the honey in?

I would help the needy, and help the elderly with their medication because so many elderly can't pay for their medication and also establish a program for special needs children in the name of my late wife who was a special Ed teacher who passed in 2021.
I had an idea for a shallow super that the bees can fill with honey. That shallow becomes "permanent" property of the bees. The queen will not pass beyond a box of honey to lay in the supers above it. I figure this shallow would be on the brood box whenever the hive isn't in winter mode. Store it over the winter, then put it on in the spring and the bees would have that food, saving you the need to add sugar water.
Wouldn't this be a more natural approach?
Possibly, however the problem will bee that a shallow super where I live will not be nearly enough to feed the bees in the winter. Most of my colonies require 4-6 winter bee kinds of food to make it through the winter. Also, I like not having too many various sizes of boxes.
When it is a new hive and the bottom box is almost full do you put a box on them or not

Hi David, I noticed this year that my lilacs or apple tree didn't get poinated and diddn't form any blossoms. In my apple tree, it use to buzz all spring. I feel it is from lack of bees. It seems as if there are very few bees. I would like your opinion if this could be my problem and how to solve it. thanks

Hey David I live in south Miami and I have a hive of honey bees that have made there home in my back yard compost barrel, I do not want to harm them and they don’t seem to be aggressive but they are to close to my koi pond and I have to dogs that are curious my question is how do I remove them safely any help please thank you

Hi Dave I have a mite question. Is it possible to over treat for mite? let say I want to treat once every 6 or 7 day. for a the summer I have looked and so far can't find anything about this. And is it better to use the vap or put the OA on a paper towel and let it hang in the hive
I cannot speak to that, because the label is the law for all treatments.

I received my nuc late because it was a rainy spring for my area. Was just able to transfer to a hive this week. It was a five frame with bees on 4.5 frames. Should I add another deep box?

I had two questions maybe you can answer for me? Somebody told me to harvest my honey on 4th July weekend is that a good time? Second since I'm already in there can I do a split on the hive or is it too late in the season?

Uh ho, taking advice from others without taking a class or doing your own research can be very misleading. Never harvest honey based on the calendar, but based on if it is ready, by either using a refractometer or by ensure all cells are capped. Regarding a split, that has more to do with the population of the colony than the calendar. Please take a class so you will understand these things more clearly.
Have you had queen cells with larva in them that you come back and they aren’t capped and there isn’t any lava in there anymore? Like could they have aborted the swarm idea?
Yes, I've even seen them tear down capped swarm cells and not swarm at all.
I'm going to try the alochol wash for the first time. I don't like the friendly fire but I feel it's a necessary tool that I need to know how to use.
I know, I hate it too.
My bees are filling the top deep with honey and ignoring the super above it. Some of my supers have a simple ledge inside that holds 10 medium frames; some have metal separators on the ledge and only take 9 medium frames. All the foundations have been primed with wax. Both are equally ignored.
I am old and don't see well enough to distinguish a queen from the pulsing mass of bees. I have been keeping bees for over 5 years. Therefore, I use a queen excluder. I have been using green drone frames. One hive puts drone spawn on the green frame. The other hive filled the green frame with capped honey. I have been routinely removing and freezing drone frames and returning them to the hive. I did powder sugar mite tests which thankfully found 1 or less mites per hive. What can I do to teach my bees to fill the supers with honey?

Oh great. I will look this up. I'm east of Albany on the VT boarder. Its my first year. I got my nuc in and messed up a little, they swarmed 2 weeks ago. Lucky they went right into the tree above the hive. Buddy came and helped me get the swarm and now I have 2 hives. Thanks for the video about swarms. Trying to catch up. A little behind the 8 ball now.

Hi David, I'm asking this more for future knowledge & to protect myself. Last year I had to replace a queen & the person I bought her from was pretty local & apparently a former bee inspector (of 25+ years) in my state. The queen was advertised as mated, but 2 weeks after installing her I still had no brood. I reached out to the seller & all he said was, "Oh, I guess she must have been a virgin queen." No apology, no offer to replace her. What does one do in that situation?
Hi Bonnie, this is a question best answered philosophically. The gentleman misspoke. He has no idea if it is was a virgin queen. She could be just slow in getting started laying. I've seen this many times. What he should have said is, "Tell you what, let's wait 14 days, and if you see the queen but no sign of eggs or brood, I'll replace her free." Neither of you can prove it was mated or a virgin, so it is mentally healthy to assume the best from this gentleman, that he is trying his best to sell good queens, but sometimes stuff happens beyond our control.
@@beek Thank you David. I agree thats how it should have been handled. I know I installed her correctly in her queen cage, waited about 5 days amd checked that she had been released. Gave her another couple weeks and still had no brood. He brushed me off without apology or offer to replace her. I ended up having to give brood to that hive that had open eggs so they could create a new queen.

I would get a x2 Frame Nuc (or block x5 Framer down to x2 Frames), using blocks of cut Insulation Foam as a temp measure ! Add top bar of timber to lift them up like Faux Frames.)
Add a Frame of Capped Brood,including Nectar, Pollen Resource etc.
Put "that Queen" in it. Add another Frame of Drawn Comb/Foundation and monitor it in about x2 Weeks time. And Feed, feed, feed ! 👀
Your "Box with Queen Cells"... Can you choose the best x2 Peanuts* ? (Capped Queen Cell term*!) Keep them... and remove the rest BUT..
before you do.. CAN YOU get "Cell Protectors" or carefully CUT and Cage these "Cells, until they Hatch ! But do not allow them to scamper all... about the Hive, killing all the others (!) These Virgins can be added to a x2 Frame Nuc, allowed to Mature, got out, get Mated, and start being a Laying Queen !
Does thus make sense?
Worth a try.... nothing to lose, lots to gain, or fail on that unliked Queen*.
At least you have options to see what you can get from those Peanuts !?!

"Queen Cups" are not "Queen Cells" (Peanuts) Until they are laid with an Egg and have Royal Jelly. (Wet) If they are Dry (Empty) just leave them, or cut them out.
.... Bees often make them for later Insurance purposes. OR if your Queen Cups are Wet.... see my message before this, aka you have Queen Cells in the making, and needs attention now ! Good luck... 🤞
