And stands aside the fact Niantic accidently gave grunts dialogues to Giovanni, meaning the boss himself telling you to "get lost" when he loses the battle is now cannon in PoGo 😂
When they were first released in Pokémon go back in 2016/17 before PvP/pve was really a thing. As for why they got removed, not so certain but it’s definitely fun to see (eg: Henry’s starmie and Callum’s dugtrio)

The event was trash. Hatch shiny rates were horrible, expecting people to be on routes to catch Basculin was a joke, catch rate on raids was unacceptably low(I shouldn’t need fifteen balls to catch something at level 49). No Arceaus surprise, no Manaphy. Chance of getting special move was pathetic. The only good thing was the people I played with. Shame on you, Niantic. We deserve better.

Dugtrio now learns Mud Shot in Gen9 though so they could bring it back. Would def bump the Dug a little.
