I FOUND YOUR VIDEOS ON THE HISTORY ON PORT HURON. I MUST TELL YOU THAT I enjoyed them so much. I was born i Sarnia and lived there until I was 6. We then moved to California this is where I stayed, I an turning 62 this year and for some reason I have this pull to find out more about where my roots are, i remember my Grandfather often took me to Port Huron to either visit a friend or pick up something he needed. when I watched your videos i actually felt a sense of familiarity and comfort. I would say that I felt a bit more grounded and somehow a connection. I now realize that I have never felt a deep at home here in California. yes i felt that California is my home now but that connection is not there. I am planning a trip now to see all of my cousins and to see how I feel. I am thinking I may retire "back Home" It is funny I never realized that i had this void before but such a warm comforting feeling i have and a yearning to return, thank you for opening up my awareness. i feel that I found the solution to that feeling that I was not complete yet.
I work in a memory care setting for residents with Alzheimer's and dementia. We started watching your videos and I am amazed at the memories that the videos brought back. Thank you so much for sharing these videos. You are making my residents so happy with their walks down memory lane.
Can start off letting you know how much enjoyed your series on Port Huron. Top notch, A-Ok, Best of the Best and a Big Fat WTG! Watched every last danged one of them enjoying your narrative most of all. Top notch, A-Ok, Best of The Best, you get a Big Fat WTG! Hope by every means you are in good health as you mentioned in your end of the series... Well just wanted you to know how much I liked your work. First became interested in similar municipal histories way back in 1972 when moved to Boulder (CO), when was a spry lad of 17. They had a Sunday version in the local paper, the Daily Camera (!?!) Can't remember exactly as maybe was only the Boulder Camera, huh? Was a long ass time ago. Everywhere have relocated since looked for same like history series coincided for me growing appreciation of History. What a joy it was to discover your series at the far end of my life of moving around the country. Appreciated your methodical geographical treatment very much making it easier to place the buildings and homes in their area and epoch. If had any questions it would be regarding your childhood home. Early on you described it as near the corner of Elk and Macintosh I believe, next to the alley and Coal Company. Then later went to lengths throughout the series providing clues with greater accuracy having been raised on Michigan Ave. a block north of Glenwood. With same description of neighboring buildings. The latter site you provided many more clues of buildings and schools you attended, place you first worked etc. that would convince even I. But at the same time when you identified Elk & Macintosh, you did so with such conviction I had to concede it was the former. Would love to have it explained, but am mainly wanting to forward my appreciation for your wonderful story telling. Here's to your health and longevity I salute your effort.
I just discovered your wonderful videos. My father played bass drum in the Port Huron City Band for many years. I can't quite tell if that's him in your parade film but that bass drum was kept in our basement in the 1950s and early 60s. There is a picture of the band taken in 1948 on display at he PH Museum that shows him playing the drum.
I started watching this series six years ago but had to drop it after maybe the 10th or 15th video ("life happened"). Already things have changed so much! Sperry's is now a movie house!
Loved the video. I bet the Sperry’s had a gorgeous house. As a little girl I remember going to the beach and we rented paddle boards which were actually just a flat piece of wood a board and a paddle. But until this video I didn’t remember the lighthouse. However that beach frames sparked a memory. Thanks
Hello Bob, I want to thank you for doing this long, on going, series of historical videos of Port Huron. I wasn't born nor raised here, but I love the city, I love history, and ive been trying to research the history for a while because I want to do some artworks. The local books on the city are great sources but these videos take it to a whole other level of depth and I love seeing and hearing your stories of your childhood, growing up in this great town. Thank you again for all the work you put into these, im sure your father and grandfather would be very proud. :)
Thank you for sharing this history - Port Huron is my hometown, and although I have been gone for the last 12 years, It will always be the place I call home.
A wonderful documentary. I am visiting the town on Sunday July 2, 2017 from Toronto on my way up to Rogers City. Will explore the downtown and go to Mass at St. Joseph's.
This used to be my hometown my grandmother lived on 18 12 Court Street read across from Roosevelt Elementary School I shake my head wondering what happened to my hometown Port Huron is not the same anymore
I used to live here...Kresge's and Arden's-loved them both!!! A walk down memory lane....He could not have used a more forthcoming sonf, "Somewhere in Time". Brings tears to my eyes....
Appreciate the history Watched a couple parts. figured would go to part 1. Been to Port Huron ., 25 years ago. A job., green horn at the time. A Detroit Union carpenter Which doesn't mean much. Going back to Port Huron soon.
i was born 1957 at ten we used to walk from south park to the north end we lived a couple blocks from the north end powers hamburger stand.. made me sad we let this place just tare down our history building by building... back in 1967 this was the coolest place ever.. it stayed that way for a long time...
I love these videos you've made. Is there anyway I can purchase them on DVD? I'd love to give this as a gift to my sister for Christmas. She used to work at Arden's in the late 50's and 60"s. I used to manage the jewelry department at Kresge's so we both have fond memories of downtown Port Huron. Thank you so much for making and sharing these.
Do you have a video about the history of Port Huron Hospital? My Great Grandmother was one of the first employees that worked in the kitchen. My Mom and Uncle ate many meals there.
I love your videos, but wish they had a subtitle that told what area they cover. You could say "The 200 block of Huron", or "Pine Grove Park" etc. I occasionally want to access them as a reference to see what was in a certain area, but I have to search through 20 or 30 videos to find the area I need. Other than that, they are Great! They bring back lots of memories. Keep up the good work!
Joanne Owens When I first started this video series it was just going to be 1 video and then 2 and then...........Well you get the idea. Now with 100 videos it would be a pretty big job but one I will be doing eventually. Super busy right now because I am still making videos plus I am now making DVDs but thank you for your interest.
I used to live on 12th and Howard St. Not to far from DT Port Huron. PH has always been a beautiful place to me. A river town. Oh what memories of my child hood 🥰
I have only watched 3 min 14 sec of this video ( I love It ! ) I will watch everything you got I Live and grew up here ( born 74 ) I was wondering ( I have not seen rest of your vids ) do you have pictures of second Blue Water Bridge while it was on the ground ? I took pics of it and lost them Please tell me you have them ! when I was a kid I and my friends would play in the old Tomas Edison ( small shack ) before they rebuilt it and steal small bottles n stuff out of it / Swim under the one Blue Water bridge / I'm looking for old photos Please that would be great or Please direct me to where I need to be looking TY very much
Sorry I should've said that a different way / When the second Blue Water Bridge was just getting started they had large parts of the structure on the ground ( had road closed off ) it was really neat
back in the 80's I lived on the end of Walnut st. a few houses down from Mr. B's mom and pop store, it was yellow and black if i remember correctly. My brothers and I would do the same things as you, swim at the Thomas Edison Inn, when kicked out, we'd hit just under the bridge. I love and miss the old days. Its a shame my old neighborhood is long gone now... All that remains are the wonderful memories. Thanks for your comment brother.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I visited PH back in 09, and my heart broke when I did not see the ALGONQUIN...such an iconic building. I used to work at "The Pub" back in 1973.
Hello Bob! As you were putting together this series do you recall including WHLS 1450AM? More specifically they had a model T go kart that they drove in many of the parades. I'm looking for video or photos of the kart. If you did and can remember about what number it would be in it would be much appreciated.
Yea its just not the same any more is it. I grew up there in the 60's and 70's. What people don't relied is when you change a,place its just not the same. I loved shopping Woolworth and Kresge Sperry's and sears. Remember when the blue water festival was down by the water? And I have many memories in Kmart on,24 the street and McDonalds. They tore down our memories when they tore down the building s.
