- In this video I take a look at the new Movnorm Operating System from PortKeys. I do a complete walk through of all of the settings and features available when running Movnorm on my PortKeys LH7P and demonstrate how it interacts with my Sony FX3 when doing wireless camera control.

Update: 13/04/24
I had a response from PortKeys about the removal of the option to have exposure data shown before or after the 3D LUT. I was told that the LH7P does not support this feature however the LH5PII should have it and it will be restored in a future firmware version.
I find it weird that PortKeys say the LH7P doesn't support this feature when it had it with the previous firmware. It is especially frustrating as the LH7P currently shows exposure readings after the LUT is applied and the LH5PII shows it before the LUT is applied. Not being able to switch either of them makes it awkward if you use both monitors as they behave differently!

Hi Paul, is there a way to download and install the previous UI version? The features such as focus tracking is a bit nerve racking for me as I run and gun for weddings, and the previous version looked a lot more ergonomical for quick navigating.
I had considered purchasing this monitor before but I didn’t do it because I didn’t personally like the style and layout of the menu. This new update and your very thorough review has completely sold me now on purchasing this monitor. Thank you tremendously for your time in creating this! 🙏
You’re very welcome, thanks for letting me know it helped.
@focusmedia2465 I completely agree! What a super intuitive and thorough review. I may also add that the speed in which you teach is superb, at least for me. Too many content creators go so fast. I hit pause and rewind constantly. You good sir have made Chinese menu options which were previously laborious and difficult to easy to follow and helpful. I would encourage you to do a complete walk through of the Portkeys and the Sony menus. It may be a long video but I would not only watch it and save it, but I would call it a necessity. Thank you both. Not only a great comment that I agree wholeheartedly on, but a fantastic review that has earned a sub and a like the old fashioned way. ❤
Very useful review. Thank you for putting this together.
Thanks very much @PaulJoy. I was having so much trouble connecting to my A7S3...until now..cheers!!
You're very welcome, thanks for letting me know.
Thank you for clear and informative video about the Movnorm firmware update! Your a life saver!
Glad it was helpful!
Wow, Paul, that's the video I needed and expected Portkeys to do at launch.. but they seem to don't worry too much about communicating about their products. The controllable camera settings available like this in a non invasive way is a game changer.
Please keep us updated on the ability to have the exposure tools displaying the log image while having a LUT applied... This makes no sense they have removed this. .. It's like two steps forwards... one step backwards..
Thanks for the video
They actually make quite a lot of effort to help and often comment on my videos. I haven’t heard anything further re the before/after thing, I’ll look on to it.
Just FYI this Firmware working on my Portkeys PT6 also! So great video
Cool, thanks!
Wow! Thanks for sharing that.
Another great video Paul. The LH5 seems to be out of stock everywhere, including Portkeys own site. Wonder if they're readying the release of an LH5 III at NAB?
Pushed to choose between the two models, do you prefer the 5" with the 2200 nit screen, or the dimmer (1000 nit) but larger 7" version?
Thanks, glad you like the video. I keep both in my kit bag, if I’m shooting outside I normally fit the LH5P11 and if I’m inside I’ll use the LH7P.
I much prefer using the bigger screen but the little LH5 is built like a tank and brighter so better suited to outdoor life.
Great video. Are the camera controls and the lut mirrored on the HDMI out to a second monitor? I want to be able to see the luts applied and the camera control information on a second monitor connected to this. Thank you.
Yes they are. I actually find this quite annoying as you can't turn it off. You obviously can't interact with any of it on the second monitor.
@@PaulJoy thanks. It would be great to turn it off. But I like the feature because if you have clean feed out of the camera, the client will be able to see when the camera is recording on the video village monitor. Ideally it would be great if the monitor scaled the image down slightly to see the whole thing with all the camera info on the peripheral like on a Venice or Alexa.
@@willvazquez3218 Yes, I agree and I did suggest that a while back when trying out an early version. I can't complain too much as I also suggested making the waveform warnings adjustable and they actually did that. I'm guessing it would be tricky with the touch controls plus all the overlays if the image was scaled down.
Dang, I was getting really excited until the end. Really disappointing that the exposure tools don’t display the log info before the LUT is applied :( really makes it a deal breaker for me. I need to see the ACTUAL data im capturing, not what the lut displays. Very strange to remove such a crucial feature… and why would the 5inch version have it but not the 7!?!
I agree however there is hope! I'm in discussion with PortKeys and they are considering putting the feature back. Apparently there are some HDMI Out limitations with the LH7P when the exposure information is set to 'Before' hence the decision to remove it however I'd much rather have the option with limitations than have it removed. Fingers crossed!
Thank you for your video Paul !!! Does this firmware update look similar on all the Portkeys monitor listed on the update website ? Or just the LH7P ?
MOVNORM has a new OS and is available for LH5PII/LH7P/LH7H/PT6
It looks similar on the two I have, there are slight differences though depending on the models features.
Brilliant and this is going to be my next monitor brand. But which model
Is best, probably go for a 5-6 inch size
The LH5PII is great, it's a full metal construction and has a few more features including a motion control interface and a fan. The LH5PII is brighter at 2000 nits. If you want SDI then there's others in the range that also offer that.
@@PaulJoy thanks so much for the reply. Love your videos
Hi ! how bad is the sun on this monitor outdoors ? is it better to take the lh5p ii for outdoors ?
It’s okay, but not as good as the LH5PII.
how does the focus control work for autofocus? can you press your focal point on the monitor?
Yes, it activates touch focus on the camera and moves the focus point.
If ISO is set to auto in camera, does it just display the phrase AUTO on the monitor? Or does it show the actual iso value at any given time like it does on the camera? They told me they would fix this to do that about a year ago
Not sure, I'll check that out for you next time I'm using it.
Thank you for this great video🎉, I wondering if there is a way to delete the camera connected by wifi in my device panel and ket just one or two
You can do that by swiping up on the stored cameras.
@@PaulJoy thank you 😊
This is cool! Portkeys really have awesome value with these features. 😅 Though in my experience, the camera battery drains quickly via cable transmission of my Atomos Shinobi. I'm guessing the wireless option in the Portkeys might drain it faster. 😅😅😅 I know, can be solved with a v90 battery. Though it'll bulk up the gear.
They have good battery life with NP-F batteries if you want to keep the rig smaller, I just like to use a v-mount because it powers the camera and the monitor so requires less battery levels to worry about.
@@PaulJoy is it possible to program the "Tracking Cancel" in one of the button shortcuts? Hopefully yes, it might make the access to the menu quicker rather than tapping the screen frequently. 😅 Thanks, yeah I use NP-F batteries too in my monitor and have at least a few camera batteries in my bag just to keep it as lean/light as I can make it.
Unfortunately not, only the monitoring functions can be put in to the four shortcuts. I have button 4 on my camera (trash can) set to cancel tracking so likely easier to just use that anyway.
How do you get out of the menu with the focus zoom iris etc onto the other menu with peaking zebras buttons function menu ?

Hey Paul I have to Sony a7siii with this monitor and it’s been great ! But for some reason when I’ve imported clips into my editing program I noticed randomly in a few clips there was 1-2frames it went black and then the rest was fine ? Any ideas what’s going on ?
I’d be surprised if the monitor has anything to do with it, could be the memory cards not being fast enough.
Can u show how to load luts?
Just got mine and it wont load up
do you find the wireless connection to be reliable? I'd need need it connected for at least 8 hours on a shoot.
I’ve never used it for anywhere near that long, if I’m using a gimbal and then it’s only normally running an hours tops between power off. Honesty, I wouldn’t trust it lasting 8 hours, not because the Portkeys system isn’t capable, I wouldn’t trust the Sony system to be that reliable, that’s normally where the problems arise. Rebooting the camera normally fixes any issues.
Is there a way to display my M.M. values from a A7s3 on the monitor? That is my most used tool for exposure and I can’t see it on the monitor.
No I don't think so. The MultiMeter can be a useful guide to overall exposure but it can't be replied upon in all situations.
Hi Paul - really useful video! Just got my LH7P, so this is exactly what I've been looking for - thanks!
The big issue I'm still having is the wifi connection for camera control between my LH7P and Sony FX3 doesn't automatically re-establish after the camera's been switched off. Every time I switch the FX3 back on, I'm having to go back into the PC Remote Function menu, which is a massive pain in the ****. Please tell me I've missed something, and I don't have to do this every time!
Hi Alex. Yeah, it's a bit of a pain isn't it. It was possible in previous FX3 firmware versions to keep the WiFi running after a reboot but unfortunately that's no longer the case and as far as I know there;'s no way to do it now other than having to do as you describe.
@@PaulJoy Ah, that's a bit disappointing, but at least I know now it's not just me! Hopefully there'll be a fix at some point. Thanks for the reply, and keep up the good work!
Alex it's the same withe the A7sii. Previously it would just automaticaly reconnect. As a sports videographer, it really destorys the functionality of the monitor. You just can't be spending the time everytime you restart the camera to go through these steps.
@@PaulJoy Paul, I'm am speaking to portkeys atm to explain the issue. As I said above it ruins the main feature of this monitor having to go through this process everytime the camera is turned off & on. Sony have basically said to me, we can't do anything about it. Our policy is not to support 3rd party devices.
@@mauricerichardson I don’t think there’s anything PortKeys can do. Sony that have changed the way Wi-Fi allows devices to connect with the whole End&Go thing.
How long did it take to connect to your camera? Mine's taking ages!
Only a few seconds but then it had been connected before the firmware update and remembered the password.
@@PaulJoy Thanks for the reply. I can't get mine to connect. I'm using a BGH1 though.
Have you been able to upgrade the firmware? I just got my new lhp5ll with the new movnorm OS. I downloaded the newest firmware and followed the instructions, but the monitor keeps saying it can’t detect the file on the usb stick.
No, not yet.
Hi, I've just bought one of their monitors with Movnorm, can you advise me on how do I see full frame without any trabsparent or not overlays?
Hi, could you send the video of the issue via FB or email? we will help you to solve the issue
@@PortkeysMonitor Hi! Thank you for reaching back. I've learned by now, that when I simply slide up or down on the screen the lines go away.
Glad you got sorted.
Hey Paul, I received my net portkeys monitor and I don't know in the new software I could do custom desquezee on the anamorfic mode. I bought it just BCS of this mode for vertical anamorphic shooting. Could you confirm it for me plis?
You can do custom desquezee in the image settings in system settings
Hi there. Yes you can do a custom de-squeeze, it ranges from .25 - 4x in steps of 1.
thank you 😮 but i was wandering how can i go back normal movnorm ui state not a wifi connected state? i can't find it
18:03
@@PaulJoy wow!! thank you so much!
@@user-ot5tl8vr8v No problem, it caught me out to begin with as well :)
I bought it today but the image does not appear. I tried two cameras with no result. It only shows me the start screen
How are you connecting it to the camera?
Hi, could you please tell me whether you connect the camera and the monitor via signal cable?
Is there a monitoring before and after lut feature?
Hi, this feature will be probably added in the future firmwares.
Not at present, it was removed in this version but have Portkeys have said it may come back in future updates.
Thank you
i just picked up this monitor, but my picture menu does not show, brightness, contrast, chroma, sharpness or tint. i'm i doing something wrong?
Hi, when the monitor and camera are connected via WiFi, the monitor will then display information on controllable parameters.
@@PortkeysMonitor Hello, the monitors does not show those features on the picture tab, only the backlight, anamorphic and color temperature show up when connected to a FX3. The touch to focus does not work, but the focus tracking works well. Please advise on how to fix this.
Really don’t know, I thought those were always there as part of the UI.
Does this firmware available for LH7H version?
Yes it is, see link in the description.
@@PaulJoy thank you so much!
can't connect to my sony fx30, when I put the password in the monitor it doesn't connect, any help?
It's hard to keep up with changes Sony make but if Access Authentication is still an option in network settings then try turning that off.
Will it support the A6700?
it supports controlling A6700 now
I can't even buy this monitor- wish I could use the firmware.
Sorry to hear that, hopefully you can get your hands on one.
@@PaulJoy Just got one! They are back in stock. Any info / updates on the Lut stuff?
@@andyk939 Great stuff, I haven't heard anything as yet!
Thanks for the video.
But now it covers the image. That was the best thing from before. :(
Terrible mistake.
That's a valid point, there are some good things about the older UI that have been lost here but overall I'm going to stick with this one as the camera control interface is a lot more useable. I have suggested to PortKeys that scaling the image down rather than covering it up would be better, hopefully they will consider it.
Hope the fix it. Thank!!
@@elgerrald You can change the opacity to see your image.
This blows away anything that Atomos has. Their software is the worst!
I'm not a fan of paying for firmware updates so my Ninja is living happily with firmware from a few years ago.
