  • This video will give an honest review of the Winnebago Solis. We've had the Winnebago Solis 59P for one year and wanted to post an honest review of how the van has performed, what has broken, and what if anything we would like to see changed. Also if we had to do it over again, would we purchase the Winnebago Solis again. So please join me, as I give an honest review on the Winnebago Solis.

    Thanks for the review. I have a 2021 59px hardtop that I bought to use as a hurricane evac and return unit. 2 months after I bought it, my town took Hurricane Ida's eyewall; I drove 100 miles west to get out of the path. In evacuation, I lived in it for 2 weeks after only using it for an overnighter since the purchase, and it did exactly what I needed it to do. Spent the first evac night in a hospital parking lot running the generator for a/c till I found a campsite the next day with electricity (yes, it's hot and humid in south LA). I've had it for a year now with minimal issues. Enjoy, and Le Bon Temps' Roule!

      That is awesome! Yes, it is so nice to have for those situations. Sometimes we just love it when we have long track meets with the kids, gives us a place to have lunch and unwind between events. We have been really happy with it! Let the good times roll as well my friend!

      @@CarolinaCampervan Again, thanks for replying. Question...any input on cold weather? I live in south Louisiana so freezing is a possibility for short periods. I really don't want to winterize every time we get a rare freeze so that I can enjoy camping during our mild winters. Winnebago advised running the heater at 60 degrees to protect the water lines on those occasions. I'm still concerned with the lines I can't see below the floor and possible exposure under the rear passenger seats. Last year I drained the Solis during what mild freezes we had, which left my system empty for camping. Any input on how winterized/protected the Solis actually is if I wanted to keep lines active?

    • @CarolinaCampervan
      @CarolinaCampervan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@miken199 We live in Charleston, SC where it does occasionally freeze. I did not winterize last year, but I did do a sanitize. I feel it would have to stay pretty cold, mid 20’s or so, for a while before things started to freeze up. I feel where I live there is no need to winterize unless some weird abnormal weather comes through for an extended period. We went out west last year where we had some really cold weather for a few days and everything was ok! I would say south LA, you should be good to skip the winterization process unless some freak cold front pushes in and stays for a while. Have a great day! 👍

      Curious about your satisfaction with the pop up camper. I live in the south too and worry that the air doesn’t cool the top bunk sufficiently. Also have never really appreciated the noise factor with the screen walls. Thoughts?

      @@CarolinaCampervan I’m in the market for a Solis PX. I’ve got two girls. I was diagnosed with stage IV cancer a few months ago. That’s the bad news. The good news is I beat it. It changed my life. I’ve always wanted one of these vans for the exact same reasons you mentioned in your video regarding family experiences. I’ve learned not to push things off anymore. The time is now to live. Not tomorrow. I subscribe to very few channels because I am a unbelievably busy software executive here in the Silicon Valley. I subscribed to your channel and wish you good luck, by the way, because of your sincere and genuine approach. And I have the same Segway scooters that you do, lol! We are brothers from another mother! Sincerely and genuinely wishing you the best of luck, my friend! Live for today and enjoy the hell out of your children! Yahooooooooooo!!!!

I truly appreciate your kind words and comments like yours help me put things in perspective too! My kids are in high school now and I wonder where the time went. On a lighter note, the scooters are pretty sweet! They fit in the van perfectly and there so light to transport around. If I can help you with any other questions you have with the van please let me know. Take care of yourself and I truly hope things keep looking up for you! Thanks again! 😀

    This may have already been mentioned, but I did not scroll through all the comments. One reason the water tank may bulge (not say this happened to you) is filling through the city pressure tank fill. If one does not turn off in time, the tank will quickly pressurize as the overflow can not handle the volume of pressurized inflow. And this pressure causes the tank to expand. Ask me how I know? Fortunately the tank I did this too had lots of space around it. It took quite a while for the water to quit draining through the overflow. A fun experiment would be to fill one of these tanks either the tank or a fitting failed. Thanks for the video. I am considering the 59PX non pop top as Van 2.0 after a good experiences in my Solis 36A. Solis 36A was perfect proof of concept camper van for me.

    Great review and very interesting! We are picking up a new 2023 Solis 59PX in a week. It had an issue with the generator shutting off after a few seconds, so we left it at the dealership. They wanted us to purchase a $4,300, 5-year warranty on the RV that covers the chassis and living quarters. What are your thoughts on purchasing an extended warranty? Thanks for the Amazon link on the seat covers also!

    • @CarolinaCampervan
      @CarolinaCampervan  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for watching! Personally, I never buy warranties on anything we buy. I feel if your product is that crappy, I will never buy from you again and will tell everyone about my experience. Also I usually just squirrel away some money for future repairs, knowing it’s inevitable. We’ve had the van for over 2 years now and Winnebago has fixed any issues we’ve had so far at no costs. (Replaced my coach switch and mailed me a bulging water tank bracket.) We’ve been very pleased with the van so far and can’t wait to head to the Florida Keys on Thursday! 👍😀 Thanks again for watching and I hope you have a blast in your new van!

    Thanks for the great Solis tour. I was wondering if you had considered using wedges on either side of the drain, allowing the wall to block/absorb the pressure of the bulging tank and keep it away from the drain pipe? I'm looking at used vans and this is one of the things I will now check and ask about!

    I have been full time in my Solis 59P for just over a year and would 100% buy a new one if something happened to it (accident or whatever). It's just absolutely perfect for my needs. Agreed on wish-list item of awning style windows. It's tricky sometimes during rain - usually if it's not too windy I pop the top and open the windows there (since the overhangs of the pop top being out further prevents most rain from coming in) and put on the exhaust fan. Personally I like the AGM batteries because many times I am in below freezing temps at night so I don't have to worry at all about keeping them warm, and if they only last a few years it's not that bad since I can replace them for a couple hundred bucks at virtually any auto parts store at a moment's notice. The armrest is just an unfortunate Dodge chassis thing (the 2500 doesn't come with passenger armrest but the 3500 chassis does).
    Interesting that you got yours from Camping World as I have heard horror story upon horror story. How was your experience? From what I've heard, they get you in the door with those low advertised prices but they make most of their money by really padding out the financing rates, so in the end, even if your sticker said $79k, you might be paying $100k or way more based on interest rates and all the added fees.

      Thanks for watching and 100% agree with you! Love this van. I have been able to go on so many adventures with the family. It has been great, regardless of the minor items I listed. With you being full time, you must have seen some pretty cool places as well! What has been your favorite place? Yes, camping world was not the best experience, but more so because we flew out to get the car and their computer system was down, so it took forever. Then we had a bit of a drive back. When we had issues after the fact, they were very slow to respond as well. Price was what was advertised apart from tax and doc fees, so typical. Although, I did ask for the total price when we were on our calls and got a finance contract before our flight. Really appreciate you watching and maybe we will see you on the road :)

      Awesome....On the highway I would say right around 17 mpg. Not too bad considering it's a tiny house on wheels. As you know, it also depends on how fast you drive and the direction of the wind. Tail wind add another mpg. head wind subtract one. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any further questions. Have a good day! 👍

    What kind of MPG are you seeing? Engine ever feel underpowered or struggle with hills? How’s the engine perform at elevation? I just started exploring the idea of a camper van after visiting an RV expo. Came across your video and really like the honest review, keep up the good work.

    • @CarolinaCampervan
      @CarolinaCampervan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We typically see an avg of about 17 mpg which isn’t too shabby for the weight. The 59P comes in right around 10k lbs with water, gear, propane, etc. I live in the Charleston, SC area where it’s super flat, but traveling in the mountains is fine. It does have a low gear option for super steep climbs if need it. I usually just take it easy on steep stuff; 1) I not too comfortable in super mountainous areas and 2) I just don’t want to blow her up! 😀 But essentially it has the same engine that a Dodge Ram 2500 Pickup has so it’s a beast. I just reserved a solis PX for spring break. Is the generator on this a generator or does it just run the chassis engine? Can you leave any bedding in the pop top bed? How old are your kids? Are they really hard on the van? We're in the market and if this trip goes well we may buy one. How do the kids like riding in the seats? They seem not super comfortable. Thanks for the video. • @CarolinaCampervan
      @CarolinaCampervan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Awesome, I think you'll really like it. I have a 59P which does not have a generator, but the 59PX obviously does. It is a stand alone generator so it will power the AC outlets without being plugged up to shore power. The 12 volt and usb outlets will work via the coach batteries without the generator or shore power. We do leave a thin mattress topper in the pop top and we store the ladder up there as well when not in use. My kids are 16 and 13. They aren't as careful as I am, but they haven't broke anything so far! As far as the kids seats, they actually aren't too bad. We've driven with the kids most about 8 hours in a day before and no complaints. Thanks again and let me know if you have any more questions! 👍

I do have a few goal zero power stations, a 500x and 1500, but honestly use them much. As far as issues go, Winnebago actually sent me the bracket for the bulging water tank. We typically don’t sleep on city streets. We have slept at gas stations like Flying J & Pilot and in some residential neighborhoods while visiting friends and family. We typically try to book a camp site at a state or national park when traveling, but there are a fare amount of BLM (Bureau of Land Meanagement) lands in certain areas that you can stay for free; especially out west. As far as gas mileage goes, on average we see about 17 ish per gallon overall. Not too bad considering the height and weight of the van. Just let me know if you have any more questions. Hi! Yes, we just have the P, so slightly smaller and fits well in parking spaces. However the X does give you a generator, AC and the option to make your bed King vs. Queen or extra storage. So it really just depends on what fits best for you. There were times when we parked that the X would have been too long, but that was rare. As far as the pop top goes, we have not had any concerns based on the locations we have stayed. If there is a concern, would just leave it down for that night and have alternate sleeping arrangements. There are options to make a bed out of the front two passenger seats and our son has slept under the murphy bed when we were unable to pull the tent out. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any additional questions!

      No, there is not an AC with the P, but I have another video how we stay cool in the summer. The pocket and PX have an AC though.

    How do you feel about the cassette toilet vs having a black water tank? Where/how do you empty it? I understand that doing that in a public toilet can be quite messy. Also, do you use the inside shower much, or prefer the outside one? If inside, does a lot of water end up on the floor out side of the bathroom area? Last question - most of the vans come with an awning - do you miss not having one? Thanks for video - it was very helpful as I try to sort out which model to go with.

      Thanks for watching and the questions! We really like the cassette toilet due to its ease of cleaning. We typically empty it at dump station at the parks where we're staying. We have emptied it at a rest area before, but yes it's kind of gross. Also we try to only go #1 in the cassette unless it's an emergency. Also we put toilet paper in a sealed bag we stick on the bathroom wall. It makes clean up much easier. I used to use the outdoor shower more, but I really like the indoor one much better now. We take the clothes hanging bar from the bathroom and place it at the bottom of the shower against the door holding the shower curtain down in place. This eliminates a bunch of water getting on the floor, but we still place a towel outside on the floor to catch any extra water. With the pop top Solis, you can't mount a permanent awning, but we have a moon shade portable awning that does a pretty good job. Here's a link to a quick video we did on it. th-cam.com/video/8DfLQf1Rzbk/w-d-xo.html Thanks again and have a great day! 👍😁

    How has the van itself run? Maintenance easy to keep up on.
    Ac and generator work reallly well? You didn’t have the pop top roof leak at all?

      Hi Glen, Thanks for commenting. Maintenance has been pretty easy. We have not had any problems- we don't have a generator or AC (except our portable one) and the pop top has not leaked.

    Hi. Have you been happy with the Ram platform itself - have you had any problems with the motor, trans or suspension? Also, are you happy with the front wheel drive as a camper van ? Still trying to decide between Ram & Ford. Thanks in advance

      Thanks for watching and the questions! So far so good for us with the overall platform. We’ve had zero motor or transmission issues. I did replace the back cushion springs with sumo springs. Big difference in my opinion! We’ve been fine with the front wheel drive with the van, but I’m sure if it was equipped with rear wheel drive it would feel the same. Winnebago did a pretty good job distributing the weight during the build out. Again, thanks and let me know if you have any more questions. 👍

    I was wanting to get one of these but the prices went up soo high it's become impossible now.

      Yeah, I think it has to do with the features on the new Promaster, not to mention everything else in the world is going up in price too! The lowest new 59P I’ve found with pop top was 99k. It is located in Pearl, MS. It was on RV Trader. The sticker on ours was 107k and we got it for 79.5k. Might be worth reaching out if your still interested. Throw a number at them and the worse they can say is no. Anyway thanks for watching and have a great day! 👍

    How hot does it get in the back when driving in the summer? I’m concerned about no AC unit in the back.

    • @CarolinaCampervan

      It has not been an issue for us, but we don't have people sitting in the back while driving. those in the passenger seats are fine.
