I really like this (even if the regular version is best), it's a little rawer and the chorus kinda has more emotion in a way because it's less produced.

So after hearing about how Jon didn't like this, I think the issue with this song was that while the bridge and chorus are fantastic, you can hear how good they are even in the demo, the verse is rather monotonous and boring. All it needed was spicing up. If there is a lesson to take from this, it's that sometimes, when a something just isn't quite working, but it shows promise, DON'T GIVE UP. Keep searching, because once you find that missing ingredient you just might create something amazing.
Totally agree. Changing the verse arrangement up and the now slow build up intro was really what made this go from a good song that existing fans would bop their head to, to an absolute MONSTER of a hit that even the mildly acquainted fan LOVES

Actually, in this line "Whoa-oh, livin' on a prayer", that "oh" and "livin' " are the same note - in the studio version it's C5, but this version is half-step lower so it's B4. And the last 2 "key-change" choruses, which are 3 steps higher, Richie sings alone, Jon is just backing vocals :D

Alec John Such was hacking his parts when they were recording this song so Hugh McDonald (Bon Jovi’s current bass player) came into the studio to play the bass part instead. He merely shifted a few notes around and Richie copped that riff for his guitar part and added the talk box and the rest is history.

Atle Kristiansen it is the original version. In fact, Jon Bon Jovi didn't like this recording that he almost scrapped the song from Slippery When Wet. It took Richie Sambora to convince him to re-work it with a new bass line, drum fills, and the talk box.
Let's be honest. Richie is the true talent of the band. I love Jon, but if it wasn't for Richie, this song would've been a piece of shit and the band would've never achieved the superstar status that they have today. So yeah, Richie deserves all the credit for this song.
Don't forget the bass playing of Hugh Mcdonald. No offense to anybody, but Alec John Such was never a professional level bassist, not even close as a matter of fact.

When playing live shows, Bon Jovi often had to use a sequencer to make up for Alec's playing level. He was let go from the band because of his poor live performances.
