Phil said in an interview that he was really drunk when he recorded this song. He could not get the right mood and feeling in the song, so he went out drinking and went in the studio 5 O´clock in the morning..Its a really cool song. Met him twice in 1982-83. He was a true rocker and a gentleman. RIP
Phil was a Poet , a Great musician and , above all, He gave every young Irish musician , learning to play guitar , a goal , to play music and be heard . ....... legend !
One of the best songs of all time. Phil's voice along with Mark's guitar, and the lyrics, it is a dream made reality. Never get tired of hearing this song one more time, and another....
I met Phil through this song that played a lot on a Rock radio here in Brazil at the time of its release. From there I researched a lot about him, more and more enchanted by his incredible talent. He was a fantastic poet and I love this song. Phil is alive, more alive than ever in each of his songs.
My brother and I jammed this song daily. Fave off the album. Still cry when we get deep about the music, the lyrics, .... We are hundreds of miles apart now but we still jam it ... toasting the Greatest of All Time
He was right on the money i wish he was here 32 years after his passing like he wished in this song.. he would be happy to see that Mark Knophler and Dire Straits made it in to the H0F..Lizzy should be there but , well you know. Phil's songs transcend any honors that can be given out and the joy he still brings!! ☘❤🖤☘⚘ rest well, you are the first one i want to greet when i get to heaven.. thank U, forever 🎸
James Greene He has some catalogue of Poems and songs, ya wonder , Phil must have had lyrics in his head 24/7 , I bet he always had pen and paper in him all the time ?? They compliment each/other here!! 🎸🍀
I listen to this album all the time. Especially this amazing track.. I often think how wonderful it was to be blessed to hear knopfler and lynette together. What a combination of talents. Knopfler with his soulful playing and Phil's heart and soul delivery
@@1975480able Rob Callaghan sorry only getting to you mate was in hospital for a few months back on my feet again honestly Phil and Mark are pure class on this track such a beautiful song like you said everything that came out of Phil's mouth was pure poetry so sad to think that Phil got sick at Christmas and died shortly after I try and listen to the great man every day Best wishes Rob and happy new year
My friend Phil Paris Lynott was a man for all seasons., If God gave you the gift of building your idea of the perfect rocker it would be Phil Paris Lynott, He was a direct descent of the ancient Irish warrior Cú Chulainn, the hound of Ulster. The blessed Phil was the cowboy, the porker player, the rocker, the wild Gipsey boy, the dancing Rudolph Valentino, the poet, the storyteller, the wise one, the lover, the lad how just got back to his town after his travels with many tales and stories to tells to his palls, the master wordsmith, the boy on the corner with his back to against the wall in the center of town with one leg bent and flat of foot placed on the wall for balance with cigaret in hand and a wing and glint in his eye for the passing girls. The man up front driving his warrior players in his band on. The vagabond of the western world, the teacher, the educator, the master musician. Listen to his words in Military Man, it will put a shiver down your back and make you think like never before about been guns and war. He is thought of in equal terms as many of Irelands previous greats, Oscar Wild, William Butler Yeats, James Joyce, Seamus Heaney, Samuel Beckett, Patrick Kavanagh, Brendan Behan, Jonathan Swift, Edna O'Brien,Thomas Moore, Lady Gregory, Seán Ó Ríordáin, Lady Wilde, Jonathan Swift, Oliver Goldsmith, George Bernard Shaw, Seán O'Casey etc Phill was a man for all seasons and anyone would have been as proud as punch to have been called his pall Phil and Thin Lizzy music, poems and stories will be listened to in several hundreds years’ time. Mark my words on this I will be proven right on this.
Been searching for this song for a long time- heard it only 1 time back around '93-`94 on our local (progressive) radio station 99.1=WHFS and was fortunate enough to record it onto cassette from the radio station. What a talent and legend Phil Lynott was. He left us way too early. At least we still have his music. Remmember Phil. Thank you so much for posting this.
This is just brilliant..Phil and Mark..what a duo.. the drums were good too..seems an unlikely pairing..imagine if they made an album together!! Wow..anyway we have this and Kings Call..timeless ..underated..awesone!!!!!
Phil was, without a doubt, the real GEM, the best thing to ever come out of Ireland! And there is quite a lot of good stuff coming out of that green coin...
Two great musicians together in one of the most beautiful protestsongs I have ever known. Thanks for uplaoding, I was so pleasantly surprised to find it here on YT where it was all this time without me knowing.... So glad I found it, thanks for uploading.....
Great song, from philo's second solo album which i only found out about a year ago.Was weird going into a record store to buy a new album from phillip Lynott, touch of sadness, bitter sweet feeling really.Old town video clip always brings a tear to my eye,esp when he walks off into the distance, heart wrenching, can't imagine how it would feel for his dear mum and those close to him.Over 25 years since we lost him, such an incredible talent.Philo was and always will be my HERO.We miss you mate :(
stewart watling Hi, I live in the West of Ireland and have the privilege of meeting Phil's Ma Philomena. As you could imagine, she is a very proud, sweet, kind lady and inspiring in her constant dedication to making sure his Art was never forgotten. The Love for his fans is real and genuine, I also met the still amazing Brian Downey playing drums at a Rory Gallagher tribute gig. I approached him afterward and hearing it was my birthday, he bought me a drink! I was already in heaven as a drummer I never thought I would see him play live.He did 1 Lizzy song, I think it was Fighting. He is low key and seems quiet in person, he plays fast but not hitting hard very free flowing style. The music lives on and even today some teenagers are getting into it so Phil would love that.
Who is listening to this masterpiece in 2021?
You're a legend 😉
Lynott with Knopfler? Guess greatness appreciates greatness.

I adore this song. Discovered Thin Lizzy when I was 14. Almost 40 years later and, they remain my all time favorite band.
Your choice is to be commended.

One of Phil's most profound songs which I think was so overlooked, unless you bought his albums & heard it

At the age of 16 I wrote this Lyrics on my wardrobe. One of the best lyrics in Rock History. Philip was a true Poet!

Fantastic song, and amazing guitar work from Mark as always, shame they didn't do more work together than this and King's Call.

Brilliant, been a long time since I heard this song. Thanks

LEGEND
One of my favorites...
So current now!
mark knopfler should have been bowing to the best lyricist of his time
Phil was AWESOME but Knopfler bows to no one :)
@@NG-Lespaul He should bow to the quality songwriter he once was, before all those tedious solo albums.
No one in the history of music has ever controlled their own destiny quite like Mark . Always kept his head despite the traps of mega stardom.
Mark never made a bad album
to hell with MTV. Phil Lynott is the star of Ode to Liberty
Very prophetic he was please come back or we can come to you and chat in the next life >>> 🙏
Never really taken the time to get into Lynott's solo stuff, but songs like this make me determined to do it one day.
The Irish Bob Dylan u n marvellous

Awesome and overwhelming theme, thanks

I remember him still I' ll always will..

Phil could put his swing on anything ... kings call is a great tune also..they defo worked well together
Great job, but "We must leave those standing" should be "We must keep on spending". Thanks for posting this.
Happy birthday Dude. you got soul
Young people , please understand this song!
I prefer Kings Call, great video on that too!
I prefer this one. It has all these interesting fills while I'm basically just waiting for the solo on "King's Call".
Wszystko sie zgadza. Philo kapitalnie i Mark dotrzymuje kroku! Swietny numer!
Phil should have been the lead singer of dIRE sTRAITS. That guitar and voice are a great combi.
Why? Nobody can replace Knopfler there. Let them be where they were.
Thin Lizzy had some great guitarists too. Singing with Dire Straits would not have been an improvement.
Hmm interesting, to bad we can't have more of this collaboration.
This is real Music not the crap you hear now
That one dislike is deaf.
adlovett98 Sadly, it is now 13. What do they know? Nothing about what good music is.
As everyone goes apes.. over the SultansOfSwing played sideways guitar, can a moment be spared to acknowledge the tasteful drumming?
