This was not a huge shock considering she beat Swiatek quite comprehensively last month at the World Tennis League Exhibition. When Swiatek is taken out of her comfort zone dominating from the baseline she struggles.
For me it seems that she is blundering some shots. It started to happen since wta finals. She can either play brilliance of angles either miss from smash. Something happened to her, but she is no long world no.1 to me.
The main winning tactic: hit in the direction the ball is coming from. She surprised Iga so many times with this.. and at the end when Iga figured it out and and stayed in place after hitting, Rybakina used the free space .. LOL
Also Jule Niemeier did something like that in the first round. She just hit back with speed at the body of Iga. But Niemeier wasn't mentally strong enough to take her numerous advantages from Swiatek. Iga could have lost in the first round and if so - it would not have been such a big surprise cause she is somehow vulnerable at this point. She has to work on her weaknesses. That's quiete normal what happens to her now. Other players learn more about Iga Swiatek. This does not mean Elena Rybakina didn't play well. Never underestimate someone who was able to win a Grand Slam, although she didn't get points for it! She may be young but Elena Rybakina is a smart player.

This year's AO shows how much of an impact had point changes from last year Rybakina would've been ranked in top 10 with Wimbledon points and she would've probably meet Iga in quarters
She won only Wimbledon. Apart from this, she was losing a whole year. She might lose the next match. She is very far from being number 1. But of course, it is possible sometimes.

I won’t even call this an upset at all. Everyone who knows a bit about IGA‘s game, knows, that she has at least 3 weaknesses in her game. Second serve, defense skills against more aggressive opponents then herself and mental toughness in serious moments. This all happened today. To loose the first set wasn’t the problem, to loose the second and in fact the match after beeing 3:0 up as the world number one was The key moment. After that moment, she was just able to put one more game on the board. I just hope that she will be able to fix the above mentioned lacks in her game, otherwise, it could be a very special / though year for her. Good luck for the further season, I hope this loss will not effect her that much from the mental perspective 🙏🍀
Mental toughness is her weakness? Quite a statement. But that's ok, it's very human to focus on those kind of stuff when people are in their down moments. I can only recommend to try to be a world number one in anything you choose and being mentally weak.
You can't make the "history" with one single battle; The WTA ranking says Iga has more than 5200 points over the number 2 in the World(Ons Jabeur). Iga is only 21 years old, she is not a robot, and things like this might happen to the best players in the World, this always happens and happened since the Tennis started ;)
Vey well played by Rybakina. Iga is a very tactically sound player but I’ve noticed her main weakness is still her mental strength. She seems to just give up when she doesn’t have a direct plan.

I'm a firm believer that politics and sports should be separate especially in this situation where there's none stop media bias. How would you feel if the Russian girls wore a Russian ribbon. They would be thrown out of the WTA for sure. I’ve always said that. If you play first strike tennis then you will be able to trouble iga swiatek(look at her against ostapenko) . She’s not that tough mentally and has a weak second serve,even her first serve is questionable . Her dominance is mostly cause the rest of the tour is inconsistent. I’m not a fan of rybakina either but it’s good to see a player use the right tactics against her.

Rybakina won in an exhibition match against Iga Swiatek. This was a similar match. Although at 3-0 in the 2nd set I thought Iga was going to win. I think it's a mental issue.
What hurts the most is losing when you were on top 40:1540:0 and in second set 3:0. Iga lost today because of herself. But don't worry there will be another wins.
She lost because Rybakina played much better than her. Doesn't matter if she was up momentarily in 2nd set, Rybakina still looked in control of the match.
I agree with the rest. Rybakina has gained some control of the match after 5th game. It might have and should have been 5:0 for Iga up to this moment so it would enforce 3-set match, but still Iga even playing really great, she wouldn't be a favorite, although she made a huge progress playing on fast surfaces as her control of the ball despite her extreme western grip and going really low on legs this year are much better than year before. But Rybakina hitting flat and serving strong is still out of her reach. And that's good for Iga to have that much to improve.
It seems that Rybakina's long limbs give her a very strong serve and deep return which gives her the aggressive upper hand. I think Swiatek should have aimed more on her body when serving.
