    I’m not a fan of show-ey pocket clips, hence the Spyderco wire clip is my favorite.
    However, It’s not a Chaves without the clip. It’s also very well executed, with your jeans peaking through the eyes when pocketed. I love the Chaves clip on a Chaves knife only! And I wouldn’t have a Chaves any other way.

    I am in love as well - a big 229 deal. I'm 76 yrs. old; love the clip.

    I know this is an old video, but I am currently in the market for one of these and after having watched about 5 video reviews on this model, yours is hands down the best. You don’t ramble (unnecessarily), and you handle the knife enough to provide good visual presence. Lastly, and most importantly, you deliver the right balance of quantitative AND qualitative info on the knife (hard specs vs personal feedback). Fantastic review.

    I just bought one of these 229 Ultramar’s directly through Chaves in the Chaves Facebook group. He is doing a special group knife. Same knife but with a special laser engraving on the show side done by Ramone. I paid $375 for the belt satin version of the 229 group knife. Can’t wait to get it!

    I love the Chaves clip . I also really like that he puts it on everything he makes never compromising his design .

    The thing is what it is. You get what you see and you see what you get. It’s not hiding anything, or trying to be something it’s not. It’s not a safe queen or jewelry.. It is solid, heavy, bold, bad, and unapologetic. I Love this thing

    I was also put off by the clip but loved everything else. Came across a decent deal so I pulled the trigger... I gotta say, I’ve completely changed my mind on the clip. It actually sits much deeper in the pocket than I imagined. Its also very comfortable in hand where I imagined the clip would be a terrible hot spot. And lastly it does really look good and very fitting with the knife, I thought it was going to look tacky but I was complete wrong full circle!

    Just bought the very last one thru
    URBAN EDC here in 7/22. Some designs don’t need modifications.
    I know I’m gonna love it!!

    Such a beautiful knife ... but I’m not a skull guy. I feel like the clip is an adolescent touch on an otherwise super-classy design.

    Love this knife. To me a very comparable knife to the CRK Inkosi. I dont know why, other than I like it that much! Do the comparison between the Ad10 and this knife. The weight is fine, in fact I love heavier knifes, dont change it. If you can't handle it but a Spyderco frn something and be happy.

    Got one today. The action and blade are sooooo good that I can overlook the clip. At least the clip does have good retention. But the blade may be the best I've found. Beautiful and functional. I agree that the grind lines on the machine rub satin add to its aesthetic.

    100% agree with that and the AD-10. To me they are both the best looking production knives out there.

    Hi Kevin, great video. Quick question: My ultramar's handle digs into the web of my hand badly. The 228 is more rounded off. Does the 229 have the same problem (hard edges)?

  • @Forrest_Gee
    @Forrest_Gee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It absolutely can go on the 2019 list. It’s a 2019 knife. A 229 Ultramar was never released until 2019. This is its own separate entity from the older customs.

  • @KnifeCursed
    @KnifeCursed 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve got the CKG 2019 version of this knife and love it overall. It’s very comfortable, has a nice thin hollow grind, good solid feeling weight, perfect lock up, and fantastic action. I do have a few gripes though. I’d much prefer a lighter detent (maybe half the current tension). The thumb studs could also use more contouring. They’re a bit painful when combined with the heavy detent. The blade also needs a smaller choil for a bit more edge.

    • @Kevinclearysharpstuff
      @Kevinclearysharpstuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I liked the stiff detent but found you do need to keep your fingers of the lock bar I totally agree on the choil it could have been smaller

    • @KnifeCursed
      @KnifeCursed 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin cleary Yeah, fingers on lockbar results in painful no open on my example. Detent is purely personal preference of course. I’d prefer to be able to slow roll it is all. This one is a hard flick only affair.

      I don’t want my wife to open my knife. I don’t want my kids to open my knife. This knife was designed by men, for men. If your little thumb hurts, buy something else.

    • @KnifeCursed

      @@musicbox4022 Lolol. Timing couldn’t be more perfect. Married 14 years (today) with 3 children. I quite literally just got done with having my ankle rebuilt after walking and working on it broken for years. I don’t need thumb studs on a knife to prove to myself that I’m manly enough. I got that shit on lockdown man. 👊🏻
      BTW- Ramon and Lorrie were absolutely class acts and tuned the detent to my perfection. Customer service was exemplary and I still hope to buy an American made Chaves one day. @chavesamericanmade

    I have Ultramar 229 G10smaller spanto (there is a wharncliffe option that’s awesome looking I’m not a huge wharncliffe style fan but I understand its desire to me it looks like a very large razor blade but the version on the Chavez there is just something different it looks great) to me all Chavez knives are perfect i love the clip yes if you going somewhere where a skull is inappropriate then carry something else problem solved but over all the clip is the knife its his logo winers need to gets some balls it’s bad ass they complain about the clip need to just move on then.i love how you like them like I do now the Curtis F 3 is also just bad ass. I’m liking your style Kevin. I am saving for a custom Koenig Arius it’s going to be about 3 months of savings of what I type of custom I want to get it’s not going to be Crazy but I can tell it’s going to have a super mirror polish finish blade. Good vid bruh

    I can totally relate to having a lighter knife in pocket but you notice it more.. this knife is high performance and feels confidant in pocket. The clip doesn’t bother me at all. It’s a clip. Don’t care what people see. For those that do.. slip it in the waistband

  • @spyderg6509
    @spyderg6509 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awww man I love the Chavez knives the clip is his logo I love the clip the size of the blade and the whole knife every version. I have the 229 Ultramar street belt satin finish drop point. Now the clip is what makes the knife it’s sets it off! I can see a lot of people not liking it but there are a lot of knives with the same o same o clip. So to each there own .now when you have this clip picking out of your pocket it’s kind of a beacon to fellow knife enthusiasts I had a guy I never met we were in elevator I work on 18th floor in office environment he noticed the skull clip and he pulls out his own Chavez it was crazy. We started talking and now good friends we now always see what we carrying that week or day. I absolutely love the clip and the newer Chavez knives there is no other knife someone can tell what exact knife you have with out this clip it’s just fun Ned alone the knifes ergos everything is perfect Mine is black micarta it’s starting to turn more black the more I carry it. Small work when two people in a 20 story building happen to be the only two people in the elevator and have pretty much the exact knife all because he noticed that bad ass clip. Again i understand the clip isn’t for everyone but to me I love it. Yes put it on your list my opinion but I’m a Chavez fan man. Good vid I will subb you know. Thanks ✌️ p.s. I spoke with Mr Chavez he is well aware of the weight he knows if he wanted to mill it out to reduce weight he would have he explained it’s an expression of tough hard word worker knife a mans knife however he is making changes here and there to appease the other masses. he is an artist you either love it or hate it.

      I agree the clip is very cool if you are at all aware of Ramon and his work, I suspect most who are put off by just think its a skull inspired by the Mtech zombie type stuff and I get that but for me it's great and what many don't realize is how highly functional it is. Love the story btw I often meet other knife guys based on them or me recognizing the clip.

    I have the C.H.U.B, I’m between this and the microtech socom. I saw on recent videos the grind stops just shy the butt end of the blade. That could lead to flaring and some ugly sharpening. I also don’t like that this is a cheaper compromise to the American made version. Makes me feel like i wouldn’t be buying a genuine chaves. Other than that everything else is great. The only negatives I have for the socom elite is tip down carry and I wish they had a titanium version. So what should I do?

      Lol wtf? If you look at Chaves’ entire logo there’s a cross in the teeth of the key.. And there isn’t anything particularly anti-god about a skull either.. Maybe if there were a pentagram or something... But a skull? C’mon man.

  • @brianf9619
    @brianf9619 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a really nice knife , I love that blade with the spanto tip. I also love a good hollow grind . I was kinda P.O.ed when Cold Steel changed the hollow grind on the Recon 1 and the Am. Lawman . How did you feel about that Kevin ?? I understand why they did it , I just think it was good the way it was ...

  • @amandeep1420
    @amandeep1420 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can tell you why it carries easy - wide clip with lots of contact area. No idea why the knife industry doesn't make this a standard instead of skinny/thin milled clips that are typically used - wide/fat clips tend to be both more ergonomic and overall more functional, making light knives disappear and heavy knives carry like light ones. Rant over, lol.

  • @markw7303

    I finally got my hands on one. Great great action and styling, but some how too wide for little to no appreciable reason. Also no milling , would I get one yes, am i in any rush ....not so much, might look at the full ti dpx urban instead, but that action whhoowee, blade finish was also kinda mehhh

    Sorry...in my opinion if it didn’t come out in 2019 what’s the point I agree with you I would love to put it on but if your talk knives that came out in 2019 this particular knife unfortunately has to stay off stay off I would love to put it on but it’s not 2019 there are plenty to choose from there are a lot of great knives that came out this year 2019. However there us another way to pay bigger to go about this is You can do best knifes within the last 5 or 10 year type idea that would be cool.if you use my my idea cuz it’s a good one cuz a lot of awesome knives have come out in the last last 5 or 10 years I mean you can use spydercos continued quality control or the spyderco lightweights that have come out cuz it is pretty much new knives they can even be use for 2019 if you like the lightweights I’m not the biggest fan but they did finally come out with my sage 5 lightweight but I will still with my original I’ve carried a couple some lightweights are ok but I like a lil heft in my hand and my sage 5 and manix 2 modded are my main two carries I don’t want it to fill flimsy as I’m working with the knives. If you use my idea throw my a shout out brother I think it’s a good one there are a ton of really really good knives that came out in the last 5 to 10 years. To me the 5 year mark would be better but whatever’s . Peace bruh
