Basic Russian 2: Verbal Aspect: Imperfective Present vs. Perfective Future

- In this series of video tutorials, you will learn about the verbal aspect by comparing and contrasting different forms of the verb in context. You will also learn how to differentiate and use imperfective and perfective verbs by practicing them through short stories and exercises. There are several video tutorials on this grammar concept. It’s recommended to start from the very beginning to get the whole picture.

First off, thank you Olga for making these videos. I have been studying Russian for almost 7 years, and your videos are helping me understand things that were never clear to me before.
Can I just make sure one thing is clear. If I use the perfective form of the verb to describe a future action, is there an expectation that that action will be completed in the future or am I simply describing what I plan on doing? I ask because I know you can also use "быть" along with the non-perfective to describe future actions. Or maybe I just need to watch the next video for my answer? :)
Dean Eden , thank you for your feedback. If you use the perfective future, with most of the verbs, it means a completed action.

Here I compare “today” and “tomorrow”.
All of the examples are clear to me except for the very first one, because isn't it also meant to be a process if Lena is reading the newspaper later, albeit a future one? Like, the guy is currently reading, that is a process, I get that. But I would have used "будет читать" for Lena in this case because I would imply it to be the process of her starting to read after her coffee.
I am confused... :(
Destiny .. , it is because I am comparing these two tenses. Of course, you can say: Лена будет читать газету with your focus on the progress.

Алина Бисенгалиева , лучше запоминать на практике. Невозможно запомнить все глаголы сразу. Запоминание списков глаголов обычно ничего не дает.
9.14 The answer is "I really want to drink / I'm thirsty. I am drinking and drinking". However could the other option "Я выпью, Я выпью" also be correct? So it would say I really want to drink so I will drink and drink? But the first option is chosen as the picture suggests she is in the process of drinking? Is that correct?
Matt Richards , no, it is not correct. We do not use the perfective form to show present. The perfective form is for the future. So to say “ I am drinking and drinking”, you use imperfective: Я пью и пью. Hope it makes sense.
@@AmazingRussian Hi Olga. Thanks for your reply. I agree and understand that we do not use perfective to show the present. It can only be past and future but in english it would sound totally fine to me to say I'm really thirsty, so I will drink and I will drink. Meaning because I feel thirsty in the present now, in the immediate future/very soon/in a minute I will drink and drink (complete the action of drinking / complete the one time action of drinking) until I no longer feel thirsty. So could Я выпью, Я выпью also sound correct in this example?
