Maggie Smith in her memoir: You could make this place beautiful… brought me here 💜
This song has been a comfort through breakup and job loss. So thanks TMG. :)
This may be the last mountain goats album that I'm here on this earth to witness. I'm so glad that it's the best one.
Hope you're still around to have heard Dark in Here too ❤️
Hope you're still with us brother
This makes me nostalgic for something I have never experienced.
I feel this comment so often when listening to Darnielle ruminate on any given topic.
@@michaeldanielpaisleyhender399 Honestly, same. All Hail West Texas does that to me. And so does some of All Eternals Deck, but in a way that makes me more actively sad lmao
Is that "nostalgia" feeling similar at all to a hopeful misery? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm sincerely curious. I mean... the driving force behind embarking on this sort of painful & lonesome journey because... fuck it? Ya know? The impetus is so hopeful, but the reality can feel so miserable. I guess that's why it's possible to turn on a dime, make the decision to cross the country with a car, a dress and a camera. Especially if anything seems better than the literal "here and now" after a failed relationship and such a momentous let-down.
Saudade is a longing for things that can no longer be experienced. Like a favorite drink that's been discontinued. Nostalgia is a longing for an idealized past experience. Like that time you went camping and you remember it being more fun than it was. Sehnsucht is a longing for experiences you've never had. Like wishing you had been born in another place.
👗 LYRICS
Here at a truck stop in New Mexico just before dawn
Somebody's grandma behind the wheel of a big rig
Pulling in with her headlights on
We smoke a cigarette as the sunrise runs riot
Someone's got to break the quiet
And she says, "What are you doing here anyway?"
And I smile and say, "You'd never guess"
She holds it up for me by its skinny white shoulder straps
[Refrain]
While I, I take a picture of my dress
I take a picture of my dress
[Verse 2]
I'm in the bathroom of a Dallas Texas Burger King
Mr. Steven Tyler is on the overhead speakers
He doesn't want to miss a thing
Out there at the counter
I blend in with the lunchtime crowd
Try not to laugh out loud
I eat half my crispy chicken club
I get extra mayonnaise, it's a mess
I take the other half out to the parking lot with me
[Refrain]
Pop the trunk and take a picture of my dress
I take a picture of my dress
[Bridge]
It still looks good, I only wore it once
Nine years ago, nine years and seven months
It may be a long time before the highway
Decides to finally set me free
I'm going to have to chase down the remnants
Of something special that you stole from me
It may be hiding in the sunset, or in distant corners of the dawn
Or maybe it's gone
[Verse 3]
But I say some prayers above the engine
I bless everything there is to bless
Run out of gas in the middle of nowhere anyway
Stand by the roadside smiling
[Refrain]
And take a picture of my dress
I take a picture of my dress
I take a picture of my dress
I take a picture of my dress

It has such a haunting quality that I love 🥰❤️
I heard this at one of the solo shows in San Francisco right before the pandemic and it was one of my favorites of the night. It is such an incredibly special song. I'm so happy others get to hear it now. Thank you for all you do!
What?! He did new music? I was there on the 21st. Amazing show but I didn't hear any new tunes.
@@loganpeters7543 Yeah, there were 2 or 3 songs that he asked folks not to record or share the were new. This was one of them.
Reminds me of San Bernardino in a strange way
this is every road trip i've ever been on in a song and it delights me
gosh i love how this catpures the preciousness of that one piece of clothing, having it again
We love country tinged Mountain Goats. We had no choice but to stan.
This song is so wonderful.
All of your music is, please never stop. ❤️
Could fit snugly amongst the songs and themes on "Transcendental Youth"
This album is gonna be a BANGER
This album so far slaps
Loving this new album. I can't wait!!
another great song! believe this might be a new fav
so hyped for the new album, everything thus far has been stellar. you can hear how much fun they’re having with each track.
Love this! Can't wait to see them in concert 💚
This and never quite free in my mind have some sort of connection, idk why
Let's get high and listen to the cure.
With this and SfPC, I’d say John and MG Crew win Music for the year 2020. 🙌🏼🐏
This song is beautiful, just keeps reminding me of some scenes deep in my dreams
YES!!!!
So good dang
This is beautiful!!
god this is gorgeous
i am so very excited. absolutely enchanted and ebullient
im so excited for this album, I'm really loving the stuff so far! I was really not into the album In League With Dragons, but this one sounds like its gonna be amazing.
Same here. In League With Dragons was the first tMG album that didn't fit with me but this one... Hell yes.
Such a cool idea for a song
What a fucking lovely song
It almost sounds like a weird combo of blood Bank and Waylon Jennings
Thank you I couldn't figure out what it reminded me of!!!!
Its definitely got that middle period tMG feel where he was heavily influenced by old country music.
Take a walk in the park, take a valium pill
Read the letter you got from the memory girl
But it takes more than this to make sense of the day
Yeah it takes more than milk to get rid of the taste
And you trusted to this, and you trusted to that
And when you saw it all come, it was waving the flag
Of the United States of Calamity, hey!
After all that you've done boy, I'm sure you're going to pay
"Getting into Truckers"
I dunno guys. I love this mf song.
~ Mellow ~
Imma slap whoever disliked

It speaks volumes about the type of band this is and the fans were are that there are, at least presently 342 upvotes and no downvotes.
“I take a picture of my ass” are not the lyrics. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Who else is here after the Anthropocene Reviewed 💫
Do you think this is from the perspective of a crossdresser?
I think it references the book “The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things” which features a boy forced into cross dressing and turning tricks for truckers by his mother
We don't use that term anymore.
@@whorianzyprexa5028 given John's intense dislike of JT LeRoy/Laura Albert (she tried to befriend him somewhat aggressively) and her treatment of other people, I highly highly highly doubt John would write a song inspired by anything she wrote.
@@medes5597 whoa what happened there?
@@whorianzyprexa5028 Laura Albert, back when she was pretending JT LeRoy was real and not her, would try and befriend "indie celebrities" she considered literary. This included everyone from Winona Ryder and John Cusack to Julian Casablancas and Conor Oberst. John was one she tried it with and he was not particularly taken in by it but he did try and help "JT" and spoke to him about his alleged abuse, etc. When it came out that she'd made everything up, that JT wasn't even real, the child abuse thing was completely made up, that the books weren't inspired by a true story and that Laura Albert was behind the whole thing and was basically little more than a pathological liar obsessed with celebrity, John was incredibly unhappy. When it turned out that she'd abused and forced her boyfriends niece Savannah Knoop into playing JT in public and mistreated her quite badly, John was even less impressed and wrote about it on his old blog. When they made a documentary about it a few years ago, they asked John to provide an interview and he refused and called Laura Albert "an abusive figure in too many lives".
This feels like a buzzfeed article written by an entitled middle aged white woman who calls herself "left" or "woke" ... Fan since Tallahassee and I haven't liked anything since Goths. This is not hitting and neither was the last song released - it can't just be me not feeling this.
ok boomer
Fans Since Tallahassee and I
This comment bothers me so much. Feel free to have an opinion, but own it as your own. Don't ascribe it to other people as if you speak for all the fans. Just share your own opinion, it's okay. I promise you, there are even older fans that would very much disagree with you, including the man who bought me my first TMG album.
that's a big fat pot of Buzzword Alphabet Soup ya got there babe 👍
Where's the pathos?
No, this is just pop.
