I always thought that I could only be happy buying a traditional full keeled boat, but after watching your videos, and hearing advice from an experienced skipper who counseled Sailing Nervous, faster / more maneuverable hull designs, i.e., cruiser / racers are the way I want to go now. * So happy to hear that you are a 30 year cancer survivor. I'm a kidney cancer survivor since 2006. *
I think that we are very adaptable and I used to think a full keel heavy boat would be the only way too. I tried living aboard this boat because it was the boat I had at the time I made the decision to try living aboard. I love the boat and it has been great for living aboard! Super glad to hear you are also a survivor and ten years is a great milestone!! :) I know you will find the boat that will be perfect for what you need no matter if it is full keel or a racer / cruiser! :)
Alfy, I am about 1 - 1.5 years away from a boat buy, plan to live aboard, and because you seem to love your C&C 34 so much, that model is on the inner ring of my radar screen. QUESTION: Do you have any problems with water leaks around your keel stepped mast? Or does a new mast boot eliminate those concerns? And can you get boots specifically designed to fit your mast type, or do you have to use a universal boot? Thanks...
Daniel Berry That time will go fast and before you know it you'll be on the water! :) I wrap the base of the mast with mast tape and I have no water leaking issues around the exterior of the mast getting into the interior of the boat. I do get a little water in the inside of the mast somehow, but I don't see it and it goes directly to the bilge. That only happens in heavy rainfalls, so not that often. :)
Appreciate the quick feedback, and encouragement Alfie, and when I do make my purchase, my homeport might very well be in WA State because, 1) the PNW is gorgeous, 2) I will not have to pay state income tax, and 3) I avoid the bone chilling winters in the NE, and the ridiculously hot / humid summers in Florida. Now, it is time for me to get busy decluttering / downsizing my life, and prepping my house for sale.
It's good to have a boat, or two, on You Tube that are based in the North West. I've been considering liveaboard around the San Juan Islands after my son graduates from college next year. Your videos give me a great glimpse at the area. You may also be a good resource for a list of well made boats--those made by shipwrights, not on assembly lines. I think that's how you put it in one video. Is your boat a C & C like one you toured? They seem like "real" boats. Sorry, I'm a shameless snob about quality not just for its beauty, but also for safety and reliability. Please respond regarding a short list of good boats as well as anything you can tell me about liveaboard in the North West. Thanks tons.

I've been thinking about relocating somewhere I can go sailing. Make a fresh-start of things... And I can get and maintain a nice-sized cutter for less than a condo-apartment would cost me. Definitely less than the condo AND a cutter would cost. I remembered that you relocated Moonshine from Vancouver to Shelter Island when you started living FT on the boat. This was to be closer to Richmond, or few convenient places to live-aboard year-round in Vancouver? Most marinas here on the Delaware River are only seasonal and discourage living-aboard even in the Summer. You commute into Vancouver or Richmond is actually closer to work?
That sounds like you have a good plan! I moved the boat to Richmond because finding a liveaboard marina is difficult in Vancouver, plus I work in Richmond so it was a good move anyways. Good luck with the transition!!
Shelter Island? I had a week long conference at Harvey's in October of 14. Caught KC and the Sunshine Band as well. Maybe I saw you chilling down there. Beautiful spots!

That was a wonderful video, Thanks for that. I've watched most of your videos but haven't commented before. Not sure why I didn't notice this before, but you have a very unique bimini frame. I'm a marine fabricator and have made many biminis but have never seen one like that. You must have to remove the forward/aft struts to fold it up. Is that true? Anyway happiest of new years to you! I look forward to more insights into your live-aboard life.
+Thatcher Rose Thank you and glad you enjoyed the video! Yes the frame work at the back is pretty sturdy, but it can be folded by removing and putting a couple of the support pieces down below. They are straight so there is no storage issue for them. Happy New Year and fair winds in 2016!

I was just saying to my wife today how much I enjoy yours and about another half dozen or so channels. I have got more enjoyment and information out of yours and similar channels in the last 2 years than I have over the last 20 years of Sailing Magazines. Once my last Magazine subscription expiries I wont be renewing to see the same out tripe and rehashed stories... I get so much more from yours and other channels - I love TH-cam. If you are interested in some Highlights of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race Start last week ( Boxing Day) click on Wilsnich02 (warning it is a little long - I must re-edit it properly) we were doing 26kts down the coast in 2 to 3 m seas to catch US Maxi Comanche and if you watch carefully you will see the local TV Network Camera Person stepping off the back over the yacht into the drink to be picked up by the chase boat. Once again thankyou for a fabulous year......

So I never have to detach myself from the boat when I need to pass inboard shrouds.

I always thought that I could only be happy buying a traditional full keeled boat, but after watching your videos, and hearing advice from an experienced skipper who counseled Sailing Nervous, faster / more maneuverable hull designs, i.e., cruiser / racers are the way I want to go now. * So happy to hear that you are a 30 year cancer survivor. I'm a kidney cancer survivor since 2006. *
I think that we are very adaptable and I used to think a full keel heavy boat would be the only way too. I tried living aboard this boat because it was the boat I had at the time I made the decision to try living aboard. I love the boat and it has been great for living aboard! Super glad to hear you are also a survivor and ten years is a great milestone!! :) I know you will find the boat that will be perfect for what you need no matter if it is full keel or a racer / cruiser! :)
Alfy, I am about 1 - 1.5 years away from a boat buy, plan to live aboard, and because you seem to love your C&C 34 so much, that model is on the inner ring of my radar screen.
QUESTION: Do you have any problems with water leaks around your keel stepped mast? Or does a new mast boot eliminate those concerns? And can you get boots specifically designed to fit your mast type, or do you have to use a universal boot? Thanks...
Daniel Berry That time will go fast and before you know it you'll be on the water! :) I wrap the base of the mast with mast tape and I have no water leaking issues around the exterior of the mast getting into the interior of the boat. I do get a little water in the inside of the mast somehow, but I don't see it and it goes directly to the bilge. That only happens in heavy rainfalls, so not that often. :)
Appreciate the quick feedback, and encouragement Alfie, and when I do make my purchase, my homeport might very well be in WA State because, 1) the PNW is gorgeous, 2) I will not have to pay state income tax, and 3) I avoid the bone chilling winters in the NE, and the ridiculously hot / humid summers in Florida.
Now, it is time for me to get busy decluttering / downsizing my life, and prepping my house for sale.

It's good to have a boat, or two, on You Tube that are based in the North West. I've been considering liveaboard around the San Juan Islands after my son graduates from college next year. Your videos give me a great glimpse at the area. You may also be a good resource for a list of well made boats--those made by shipwrights, not on assembly lines. I think that's how you put it in one video. Is your boat a C & C like one you toured? They seem like "real" boats. Sorry, I'm a shameless snob about quality not just for its beauty, but also for safety and reliability. Please respond regarding a short list of good boats as well as anything you can tell me about liveaboard in the North West. Thanks tons.

I've been thinking about relocating somewhere I can go sailing. Make a fresh-start of things... And I can get and maintain a nice-sized cutter for less than a condo-apartment would cost me. Definitely less than the condo AND a cutter would cost.
I remembered that you relocated Moonshine from Vancouver to Shelter Island when you started living FT on the boat. This was to be closer to Richmond, or few convenient places to live-aboard year-round in Vancouver? Most marinas here on the Delaware River are only seasonal and discourage living-aboard even in the Summer. You commute into Vancouver or Richmond is actually closer to work?
That sounds like you have a good plan! I moved the boat to Richmond because finding a liveaboard marina is difficult in Vancouver, plus I work in Richmond so it was a good move anyways. Good luck with the transition!!
Shelter Island? I had a week long conference at Harvey's in October of 14. Caught KC and the Sunshine Band as well. Maybe I saw you chilling down there. Beautiful spots!

That was a wonderful video, Thanks for that. I've watched most of your videos but haven't commented before. Not sure why I didn't notice this before, but you have a very unique bimini frame. I'm a marine fabricator and have made many biminis but have never seen one like that. You must have to remove the forward/aft struts to fold it up. Is that true? Anyway happiest of new years to you! I look forward to more insights into your live-aboard life.

Hi Alfy, what a wonderful year..... thankyou so much for sharing your life and a special congrats to that life changing anniversary (I can't imagine what it would have been like for yourself or family at the time - it must have been horrid). I was just saying to my wife today how much I enjoy yours and about another half dozen or so channels. I have got more enjoyment and information out of yours and similar channels in the last 2 years than I have over the last 20 years of Sailing Magazines. Once my last Magazine subscription expiries I wont be renewing to see the same out tripe and rehashed stories... I get so much more from yours and other channels - I love TH-cam. Happy New Year to yourself and family. If you are interested in some Highlights of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race Start last week ( Boxing Day) click on Wilsnich02 (warning it is a little long - I must re-edit it properly) we were doing 26kts down the coast in 2 to 3 m seas to catch US Maxi Comanche and if you watch carefully you will see the local TV Network Camera Person stepping off the back over the yacht into the drink to be picked up by the chase boat. Once again thankyou for a fabulous year......

Happy New Year! Thanks for the nice video. Canada seems like a very nice area for sailing. I'm usually in the British Channel, the Mediterranean Sea and North Sea but your videos make me really like to go to Canada one day!
BTW: I'm using a "Y" shapend lanjard. So I never have to detach myself from the boat when I need to pass inboard shrouds.
