In 2004 I packed up & moved to China (I'm from Australia). I was very fortunate that my work over the previous year had stuffed up my tax & I got a lot more tax back than expected, so it paid for all my immediate expenses, airfare etc. At the time I was only doing casual child care work, with a couple of side 'hustles' like working at our federal election, promotions for a government department etc so was in no way rich. 1 year in China ended up turning into 10, with my salary increasing with my experience & extra training I did (I was teaching English, and got my CELTA only in year 6 there). I returned to Australia 18 months ago & walked into work within 3 weeks (!) & now looking at purchasing my first home. That 10 years abroad is the most priceless thing I have done, learning about myself, the travel I did etc. Maybe I'll go back & do it all again?!
can you do a more in depth video about living abroad? like what did you take with you? (furniture, clothing, beauty tools etc) did you have to put your money into a france based bank? how did you find an apartnent? and other things abouy how you got settled etc.
SUCH great tips. I definitely agree on the "you don't have to be rich to live abroad" thing-- I lived in Florence for a year and I lived a pretty lovely life without spending much on rent, food, going out, etc. It made me into a better spender, for sure, because I realized I didn't need much to live well.
Swedish universities are free for European citizens. So European citizens can just go and study in Sweden for free. Also, if you're a student at a Swedish university and go on an exchange to any other country, since you're still signed up as a student of your Swedish home university during your exchange, your education in your other country is also free. So, you could study at super expensive foreign universities for free. It's great! (But sorry Americans, since you're not Europeans citizens, this won't apply to you.)
I think the studying for free thing is basically possible all-over Europe. I got my exchange semester place in England through Erasmus and they will be paying for the fees and even providing me with ~160€ a month. I will be signed in in my German university but only have to pay about 18€ instead of about 420€ for the semester (this fee includes a bus ticket for the whole city area and a train ticket for the state I'm living in, so it is actually quite cheap)
I am amused by reading these comments. Some of you are complaining it's American-centric. Well, Chelsea is an American. She can't talk from the perspective of other nationalities. She may not be helpful to an Australian, a Russian, or a Spaniard. She's American and was born that way.
Actually, I think this should be helpful to anyone living in the west. The visa procedure is pretty similar for all of us, if anything it is even easier for Europeans because of shengen. I'm surprised to see so many people complain about it.
Well, technically Brits are Europeans too, but they might not have Schengen soon anymore, that's why I asked :) Hopefully we (I'm an European too) will be able to go to the UK without the visa still..

Depending on what citizen you are in a country, for me, its easy to get my working holiday visa but for others, maybe not so much. Research goes along way to finding information so things like this :)

It is relevant considering some of the myths they "debunk" are directly contradicted in other contexts. The fact that you compare this comment to asking about laundry on a cake video is ludicrous. You guys might want to do an update on this video because Brexit has been throwing everything about visas and EU tax laws for a loop. You should also caution people to check the labor laws of the country they're moving in; I know that I needed to register as a freelancer with the chamber of commerce before I could send invoices, and if you're getting wire transfers the tax laws can get kinda hairy.

Chelsea I LOVE that you lived in Paris!! That's my hometown and I miss it so much... I've thought a lot about trying to move back, but since I don't have my citizenship (don't even get me started on that, ugh), I dunno, I've always heard horror stories about trying to get a Visa. And Paris of all is just SO EXPENSIVE. I could maybe try to transfer to a french Starbucks... and I might have some friends I could live with until I find my own place. I dunno. I had a few friends in the Montrouge area and since we just lived at Alésia I'd go down there and visit them sometimes. I don't think it's a dangerous area, but I'll double check for sure.
In Denmark there are tons of master programs in English (i am even not sure if they have any that are not in English :D ). The same applies to Sweden and Finland (not mentioning Norway, 'cause it's just crazy expensive xD )
I have a wish to live in Berlin, because it's the city of art, design and strong underground culture, but I'd like to either study my masters there or work within my field. I have noticed there are no state recognized academies for animation and I don't have enough money to even save up for a year on the cheapest one so now I don't know what to do. To delay that dream of living there like a student or go right in like a worker. Currently I am finishing my bachelor studies in Belgrade so time is ticking...

Very helpful video, but I agree that it's focused on western countries. I am an American expat living in Japan, and it is more difficult to get a visa to stay here (probably applies to a lot of Asian countries). The easiest is a student visa, but there are working visas, etc. To get a working visa you need to prove to immigration that you are doing a job that a Japanese person would not be able to do, which limits your options significantly.

i started teaching English in Japan I had about $1000 dollars speanding money till I got paid but I didnt use it all(although my school loaned me money for my apartment deposit and car insurance about $1500) and I paid for flights separately so You dont really need that much especially if youre generally a frugal person

I'm spending my last undergrad quarter in London next year and I totally agree with all of your points. I think a lot of people limit themselves thinking Study Abroad is the only option. I was in Argentina last year through AIESEC (student-run organization that I was part of) and I got to go for a discounted price too. I volunteered over there for a month and it was a great experience! Now I'm excited to try out Study Abroad from my school
Well, if you can keep your job and work remote, normally live in New York and can temporarily rent out your place to someone else, it should be pretty easy to finance living pretty much everywhere else. That, however, is a very privileged and rare situation. Not so easy when you try this from Slovenia or the Philippines. Having said that, there are "Work and Travel" programmes accessible from many countries, where you hop from short time job to short time job on specific visas, thereby traveling the world.
The myths listed can be true to an extent.The key is to prepare, one is through researching the many online sources from that countries government website for education, tourism and even the school of your choice about employment, travel, lodging and of course the paperwork to make it legal. Also seek out reputable people who have done same thing, preferably to the same country that your headed (and a bigger plus, same locality) for tips and advise.

Great video! Really articulate and informative and, although obviously america-central, the basics can be applied to anyone for sure. I would advise anyone thinking of living in the UK for a while to talk to someone from the country about where to live both from a lifestyle and a money perspective.Some places (London) are dangerously expensive (you actually get paid higher wages for the same job if you live in and around London because of the astronomical costs) and there are other places too where prices are usually high and it's easy to get sucked into thinking a certain price tag is the norm if you're only looking in one area. Also be careful with conversion rates between currencies!

Love this! I happend to go through a study abroad program but was not living lavishly by any means. In fact I talked to local students when in Belgium and their tuition was only a small fraction of what I was paying to to study at their university. Living abroad (even studying abroad) CAN be cheap! How do you spot an American expat? They only speak English and complain that the people around them don't. I get that it's hard to learn a language but you could at least make an effort. French is not so hard.
I think you misunderstood the video. When exactly did she say that people around her should speak english? She encouraged her viewers to learn the language of the country and even gave tips how to do so.
You need to start from somewhere. Only tourists that never been outside the country think this way, not all. The video she encouraged learning in real life settings
If you choose an European country for living abroad, then you have to take into consideration that language will be a limiting factor in finding a job. For example, many places require even dishwashers to know Danish :D which is kinda silly, because everyone EVERYONE speaks English in Denmark! :D

Just buy a plane ticket and fly over there if you wanna live abroad..ofcourse have spending $$ saved up too.

Having said that, there are "Work and Travel" programmes accessible from many countries, where you hop from short time job to short time job on specific visas, thereby traveling the world.
The myths listed can be true to an extent.The key is to prepare, one is through researching the many online sources from that countries government website for education, tourism and even the school of your choice about employment, travel, lodging and of course the paperwork to make it legal. Also seek out reputable people who have done same thing, preferably to the same country that your headed (and a bigger plus, same locality) for tips and advise.

I was wondering how you found work during July and August as being an au pair is basically off the books (kids often on holiday and non-dependable income). The thing that sucks is I'd always planned on doing my masters/PhD abroad (in France) and then I decided to go into English academics so my options for studying abroad became very limited
Great video! Really articulate and informative and, although obviously america-central, the basics can be applied to anyone for sure. I would advise anyone thinking of living in the UK for a while to talk to someone from the country about where to live both from a lifestyle and a money perspective.Some places (London) are dangerously expensive (you actually get paid higher wages for the same job if you live in and around London because of the astronomical costs) and there are other places too where prices are usually high and it's easy to get sucked into thinking a certain price tag is the norm if you're only looking in one area. Also be careful with conversion rates between currencies!

Actually in all european countries there are english-taught programs. Also, there are countries like Denmark where there's no tuition fee
Love this! I happend to go through a study abroad program but was not living lavishly by any means. In fact I talked to local students when in Belgium and their tuition was only a small fraction of what I was paying to to study at their university. Living abroad (even studying abroad) CAN be cheap! How do you spot an American expat? They only speak English and complain that the people around them don't. I get that it's hard to learn a language but you could at least make an effort. French is not so hard.
I think you misunderstood the video. When exactly did she say that people around her should speak english? She encouraged her viewers to learn the language of the country and even gave tips how to do so.
You need to start from somewhere. Only tourists that never been outside the country think this way, not all. The video she encouraged learning in real life settings

If you choose an European country for living abroad, then you have to take into consideration that language will be a limiting factor in finding a job. For example, many places require even dishwashers to know Danish :D which is kinda silly, because everyone EVERYONE speaks English in Denmark! :D
