It might be a bit dated now but in my youth it was said that the highest office in Australia was being the PM, second was being the the Australian Cricket Captain. To be that representative on the world stage was hugely important and Warney, love him or hate him, was not that guy. In his later years he was fantastic but his bombastic nature as a player and as a person in his prime playing years was not conducive to being a great representative of the ACB and what they saw as Australian cricket as a whole.
Agreed. Warne was a different character as a young player. It was in last third of his career you could say he had the potential to be a captain. Worst thing IMO was that it wasn’t because he lacked a cricket brain or ability to lead men but his playboy lifestyle off the pitch. He took fame in full swing and a captain can’t really succeed and do that at the same time.
Steve Waugh was the most successful test cricket captain and Ricky Ponting matched his run of wins. With respect to Shane's memory it is hard to complain about the performance of the captains picked ahead of him.
This is nonsense. Waugh was always going to be captain after Taylor's retirement, so Warne's opportunity came when Waugh gave it away. At that time he had injury problems, had misbehaved with the doping thing etc. & Ponting was going to be a longer term leader. Ponting, too, had a couple of issues off-field & he was told to pull his head in & he did so. Also, there's a bias against having bowlers lead the side; Cummins is the first to do so since Richie Benaud. The captain is picked by the CA directors with input from the selectors, so it wasn't really really down to James Sutherland. It's simply a case of things not aligning for Warne, had a few things gone differently he would've been captain. Some people assume there was some intrigue & people trying to keep him away from the job when it was more a case of happenstance.
Darren 'Chuck' Berry was Warnes best mate and his WK. Warne wanted him to succeed Healy but wasn't a very good Bat. Warne did what Warne does and showed loyalty to his mate, calling Gilly an arselicker during a game and told him that's why he was in the team and not the better wk.

You only have to look at Cummins,a yes man,Warnie would've if given the opportunity made a fantastic Çaptain,his knowledge and his cricketing brain was exceptional. But his bad boy image didn't fit in with what the prawn sandwich brigade at the ACB wanted as a captain. Warnie liked one of his best mates in Vic who was a keeper and thought he should have gotten Gilchrist's job then didn't like that Gilchrist got made captain over him when Ponting was out. His mate was a better keeper but couldn't bat.

The greatest test spinner of all time....and played hard off the field like a real man should..parties and birds galore and he liked a laugh as well..iam an England cricket fan..but still miss 😢the Warnie terribly..he'd would have been funny as captain..sat in match referees room with a ciggie and his favourite cheese sandwich 😅
You summed it up pretty well Jarrod. Off the field he would have been terrible. On the field he would have had some good strategies but I'm not convinced, many of his ideas would have imploded in the longer format. As for his personality, it's not even just the cigarettes or late nights - he just said dumb things - constantly.

And won 10 out of those.
It was exciting to watch him as captain in those matches. He was prepared to take risks.

It's a travesty that Warne wasn't Test Captain. Fairplay to Australia they chose leaders based on self control.

The Late great Warne had a fantastic cricket brain 🧠...only reason he wasn't picked was because of his bad boy image.

I think we got to see the best of Warne as a cricketer and after hours specialist as a result.
Ironically I've played against Sutherland and his son and it was the worst behaved team I've ever played against, so his criticism of Warne is ironic
