    So different, so brilliant and utterly enjoyable, so Steve O'nions. When most of the other You tubers, are either brandishing zillion MP imaging computers, or are trying to look credible by flashing their Leica M6 or Hasselblads, Mr O'nions goes completely the opposite way, and shoots those lovely images using a camera that retails for less than £20.00 on the Bay. As Ansel Adams once put it, the most important part of a camera is six inches behind it. Thank you.

      I’m going out today with something even more basic and cheap, it is the best tool for the job in a location where sharpness would ruin the effect I’m after.

      I remember the fine shots Steve got with the cheap plastic Holga camera. Just proves again what you are stating here. The artist, not the brush, makes the art.

    5:32 The serene ambient music combined with the toppling B-roll camera... Classic and subtle Steve O'Nions self-deprecation that ends up much funnier than most TH-cam try-hards.

    I agree that the first two had lots of atmosphere. They almost looked like something that would have been included in Stieglitz's Camera Work journal. Regarding the long lens, is it possible that was just a bad copy? Perhaps you could track down another one to see if it was better. I also really like the one at 4:10. Great foreground/background contrast.

      You’re right Bob, they are very ‘Camera work’, late pictorialism indeed.
      I also have the far superior Nikkor 70-300 af-s VR which works well with my F80 and F100 so the basic one is going back into the box for now 😀

    Nice work. I love my Nikon F60 and it was so cheap. Lately I have been shooting it in landscape mode for architecture and urban landscapes type work. That way I get the depth of field I’m after without having to think and I can focus on the photos and composition. 👍🏻

    I bought an F55 body about 6 months ago for 99p on eBay (only bidder, so lucky me). When I tried using older AI-S lenses although they fitted I discovered you get no light metering. So one roll of film and then into the cupboard. I resurrected when I read a Ken Rockwell review of the lens - he really rated it well for it's build and price. So I got a 28-80mm kit lens a couple of weeks ago for about £25 and suddenly had quite a nice plastic fantastic, for very little dosh (and nearly as cheap as the slightly superior Mintolta Dynax 505si).
    It's annoying about not being able to set ISO. Glad you pointed this out as I roll my own film so don't have DX codes on the cartridges. Luckily, I roll Fomapan 100 and the F55 defaults to 100 ISO in the absence of a DX code.
    Great vid, thanks

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      99p - bargain! I also miss the lack of metering with older lenses and everything up to the F80 suffers this omission sadly.

    The excitement and drama of literally not knowing, but kind of having an idea what the image might be like.
    Probably irrelevant, I do own a mint Olympus OM system with grip..... I really have to get it out and take photographs and more importantly try and find the time to make a video.

      Very true John, I can never be certain what I've got (that's part of the fun) but this allows me to get on with the job and not be distracted such as when constantly checking the LCD on a digital camera. When I'm out it's all about seeing and shooting, the camera is not in between me and the shot, I just see the image I want and the camera does it's job unobtrusively.

    As mentioned on your previous F55 video, I ordered a boxed, new body and lense as a present which arrived this week. In comparison with my Canon FT QL, which is fully manual, aside from the match-needle meter, this has a nice modern selection of features making taking photos very easy. The one thing that struck me is how light/cheap/plasticy the lenses are in comparison to my old FD lenses. As you said, there's pros and cons to that. But, as for a general day-to day camera which you're not worried about , it's great. I'm just thinking that I need to "test it to make sure everything is working" before handing it over for Christmas....

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad it’s all working Martin. The FD lenses are a much higher build quality but not necessarily sharper. I had a full range some years ago and like older Nikkors they love f8-f11. The F55 is the ideal camera for times when you don’t want to carry a camera 🙂

    I enjoy your views of Wales. Gorgeous countryside and landscapes! I can see why the Celts fought so hard against the Romans and then the Anglo-Saxon, Vikings and Normans. Who wouldn't want to keep that land for themselves! Enjoyed the photos and the setup discussions. I was surprised that some photos seemed to show more grain at 800 while others seems to have grain pretty much the same as if they had been shot at 400. I suspect that is primarily just that contrasty scenes always exhibit it more or at least one can see it more.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The grain issue partly comes down to exposure I think, I was generous with those shots that had good light but others barely received enough for EI 800.

    Really enjoyed this video. I have bought an F65 as a camera to take out as it is light, and easy to use. Quick question, and pardon if obvious: If you have a 400 speed film and dial -1 for exposure compensation as you did would you be increasing your development time, or would you just develop as you would for a 400 speed film?

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d increased the development time to compensate for the under exposure. At 800 it doesn’t need much extra and it will also increase the contrast so you have to watch out for bright scenes with deep shadows, these can quickly get hard to process and print.

      The F65 (have it here, too) does have the most sluggish, slowish AF, compared to the F55, F75 and F80. Sad, but true. The good thing is, if the (serial failure, Nikon issued a service statement back into it's heyday) F55 Autofocus dies, one could get easily a replacement on ebay or elsewhere. Plus, nobody, absolute none does take you seriously - with a champagner beginners SLR body, and/or especially same colored 28-80G Kitlens.

      They really dropped the build quality in the 90’s Cameron to attract a larger audience. Used within their limits though the results can be spectacular.

      @@SteveONions looks like there was quite a bit of competition between canon and Nikon in the entry level SLR market. The specs and build quality in that segment are almost identical

    70-300 not good over 200mm. Who really needs the newest gear. Shots are good. 28-80 not great for manual focusing. Good images though.
