Inside a Drill Press

  • Restoring and upgrading the drill press from my grandpa was a fun project exactly to my liking. The variable speed is incredibly useful, and I can finally run all tools at the right rpm.
The VFD is a Sourcetronic ST 500 400v 1,5kW for the 1kW motor. It's not sponsored, and I paid about 260€ for it. You can get much cheaper ones, but I had a bad experience with one of them and decided that investing a bit more into a quality one made in Germany is a good idea. I have no regrets.
Same with bearings and belt, which I got for 60€ total. I used cheap bearings for different projects, and they broke way too early. This nice drill press deserves nice hardware, so I went with SKF bearings.

to install bearings without hammering on them , get an electric hotplate and heat the bearings on it , basicly , a bit of spit on youre finger touching the bearing should sizzle on it a little then its hot enough , grab the bearing with a welding glove and the bearing just drops over the axle
to fit the same bearings in the quill housing put the quill housing on the hotplate and wait a while then drop axle with bearing in
worked at a company that build and repaired electric motors and that was the way we did it

And you know that when that drill was made, it was of way better quality than those today. Much respect for you doing all this work to revive Grandpa's drill press and improve upon it. I, too, had been give a hand electric drill from my late paternal grandfather, a Craftsman as was the drill. All metal frame from the late '50s. User is for many years despite the weight of it, but had to retire it due to electrical hazards that cropped up. I wish I had kept it as I have learned so much about reviving old quality tools and would have LOVED to have been able to do so for Grandpa's drill.

    • @MariusHornberger
      @MariusHornberger  ปีที่แล้ว +1

You can buy similar and better quality today too. It's just more expensive. This drill new today would also be in the range of 1000-2000€. Today's market also offers more of the cheaper stuff that isn't good

I echo the comments below regarding your grandfather... When rebuilding industrial pumps years ago we used to warm our bearings in mild oven. They would then just drop over the shaft and lock on when they cooled. Don't know if that process would have an adverse effect on sealed bearings. With your skills and experience you should consider establishing yourself as a design consultant to companies building industrial machinery. Your insights, attention to detail, creative problem solving and passion for simple yet extremely accurate operation are sorely needed. Good job.....

I have exacly same drill press that i have obtained at the scrapyard, only it was sigle phase and table was broken.
Sometimes i repair mehatronics on scrapyard machines and i am allowed to take everything i want.
I have replaced all the bearings, machined middle pulley to accept two bearings instead of one, installed 1,1kw 3 phase motor, Installed 1,6m high column out of stainless so now is free standing instead of table standing.
I have filled column with scrap metal and concrete, installed 60kg 30mm thick steele plate under the stand.
Installed used Yaskawa inverter and Eaton (Moeller) buttons and pot.
I have made new table and table arm out of thick steele, table and arm was cold blued.
I have purchased only bearings, belts and Eaton buttons, everything else is from scrap, for example, stainless column is from brewery, i have only made new bottom flange and polished it in lathe.
One other thing, Yaskawa is programed with DC breaking function so quill stops in 1/3 of second when you press stop.
There are more of us who want to pimp our tools🙂

I had one very similar, Hare and Forbes, maybe only 10 years old. I felt exactly the same as you about the changing of belts and it was a blessing in disguise when the tensioning lever sheared off. Pulled it apart to salvage whatever useful bits there were (so many parts look identical to yours) and bought a direct variable speed drive Nova Voyager to replace it. Excellent tool, worlds apart from what I had.
Looks like a great conversation you've done, nice job!
