I was so lucky to be there for this performance. Of course, I'd never heard this music - it was before her commercial release of the MONTEZUMA highlights. Glorious. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Just a piece at a concert. She also sang "Dove sono" (Figaro), Mad Scene (Hamlet), Bell Song (Lakme) and as an encore, "Io sono non piu l'Annetta" (Crispino). It was the first time I ever saw her. The last time was her last NYC recital, which she also ended with the Crispino aria.
Ooo. This is RARE and wonderful. Thanks so much for posting it. I had no idea she sang it “live”. The studio performance of this aria from the previous year is one of her greatest recordings. It’s slightly faster and absolutely dazzling in the rapid scale passages (as is her Martern aller Arten from The Art of the Prima Donna set, also a stunner). She was one of the greatest sopranos in history.
She simply could do more with her voice than anybody else in music history.....SO ACCURATE!!! (the fast notes)
All her performances sound like studio recordings. It's insane.
I envy anyone who heard her singing live.
Perfection

Was it the whole opera, or just a piece at a concert?
A concert. She later issued a magnificent disc of "Montezuma' highlights ... do look for it, for it is astonishing!
