This song is telling his love how important she is to his life and has NOTHING to do with missing anyone or break ups. I watched this very show on television when it first aired in 1980 with my wife.

I heard Kenny Rogers sing live in the 80s. He shocked me because it was clear when I was in his concert that I had never heard a recording that did justice to his voice. Live, his voice was simply at another level. Other artists did not seem to me so extremely different from recording to live.
I was very young, and went with my parents. It was a family show anyways, but yeah, I have to say he sounded much better live.
Lionel Ritchie wrote this song and there is a video on TH-cam of them both performing it together. Kenny died at the age of 81 in 2020.

I loved that performance with Lionel Ritchie and Kenny you could just see the love and respect they had for each other.
I love so many things about that video. One great example is when Kenny is trying to get Lionel to do the reverb technique. You can just tell the friendship chemistry between the 2. Lionel stayed in Kenny's like poolhouse or whatever for it is called for those "spare" small mother-in-law-type livable buildings.

Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lucille", "Through the Years", "She Believes In Me" etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.
He is singing to his "Lady". He sorta feels sorta like a fool for falling so fully in love with her. But he and his lady are totally in love and he is singing this song to her.
No reverb, it's called talent. Something todays singers don't have without their autotune and tricks of the trade.
Kenny was in his fourties’ when this was done and the ladies loved his silver hair.
Kenny was 42 in this video... it was 1980. Unfortunately, he isn't with us anymore. He passed in March of 2020 at the age of 81.

First time watching your channel. I have been listening to Kenny since I was a child, so I am a diehard fan. So glad you picked up the gist of the song at the end. Please do more Kenny he is a diverse and talented artist who has a lot of fans. It broke my heart when he passed. And don't worry about folks who complain you stop to much. 2 duets you just have to listen to are: Kenny and Lionel Richie singing "Lady" together some 30 years after the song came out. (TH-cam video) Lady was Kenny's cross over from Country to R&B song and was a huge success. It changed Kenny's career, brought it up to the superstar level.
You must also listen to Kenny and Dolly Parton singing "Islands In The Stream" ( TH-cam video). They are delightful together.

This is a beautiful song & Kenny released this in 1980 & Lionel Richie also released it a few years later. They were friends until Kenny died in 2020. After he died Lionel did a tribute show to him, which was perfect, because in 2012 Kenny honored Lionel. It was in Las Vegas in 2012 & they sang this together & it was amazing. The friendship & love between them was such a beautiful thing to see & a must watch. Check it out. Kenny has another beautiful song called 'Through the years' which is especially wonderful for married couples & longtime partners. There is nothing cliche about a love song like this. We felt this song deep in our hearts in a time when men could express their feelings in a song for a woman they love. These were REAL FEELINGS, not FAKE like today. There is something that has disconnected younger people to their emotions and feelings in today's world. It is sad. The song is purely about him proclaiming his love in words and song to his woman. People all over the world said their wedding vows to this song. Where is the heart of music today??? Gone forever???

Okay…Lady is in his life. He’s not feigning for her. He is paying homage to his woman. He’s singing a tribute to his lady. Where in any of the lyrics has his lady left him? She hasn’t gone anywhere. Basically he just is telling her how much she means to him. What her love means to him and how her love has affected his life (something your generation is not used to). Also when he says “you have gone and made me such s fool. I’m so lost in your love” merely means he’s so in love with his Lady….a fool in love. She’s not gone anywhere. This is a true true love song. This man would never throw his woman on a grill.(words taken from today’s so called love songs). Most women would rather their man hold up a boom box at her window “80’s” style than throw them on a grill, basically being violent. Just saying. U missed the mark on this one. Play this song for your “Lady” and see how she reacts. Better yet sing it to her with or without auto tune.
