I remember so clearly watching this on TV. I was about to go and get a cup of coffee (as one does in the interval) but heard this start and had to come back and watch. I was so gripped, amazed and overwhelmed, just like the audience. Truly an evening never to be forgotten.
Michael Flatley is a legend. He became Lord of the Dance and his show was massive. His show sold out multiple dates in arenas where I lived at the time in the U.S.
He appears to be a legend in the USA. But he is very disliked in Ireland. Americans do not seem to be aware of his despicable behaviour towards the Riverdance company and his fellow dancers.
He really is disliked in Ireland for betraying riverdance by audaciously asking for more pay and he was insufferable to work with he stole the style in order to make himself rich so yeah he’s not well liked at all
@@Rosiecrossley1 Well that is disappointing. Did he steal the style or was he the style? It seems to me that if Flatley wasn't the genius behind the show, Riverdance should have been fine without him. Maybe I have gotten to used to this sort of thing in the U.S. These superstar types can be big pricks with this sense of superiority over others.
This was one of the most beautiful intermission acts ever at a Eurovision Song Contest. The Eurovision Song Contest was organized by Ireland in Dublin at the time. The traditional Irish dance. This has always stayed with me. Greetings from the Netherlands
I was 20 and being a big Eurovision Fan I saw this as it happened. I had never seen anything so gobsmackingly brilliant in all my life! If I remember rightly I had to pull my jaw up off the floor and the next day I ran out and got the soundrack. It still gives me chills now.
It seems that Ms. Baker has branched from reviewing comic acts to reviewing stage dancing. A good choice was made for the initial one. What is noteworthy, in addition to the synchronicity is that the dancers kept their torsos upright and relatively motionless while their limbs were active, especially the legs. Imagine how much discipline and practice it takes to achieve that flawlessly.
Yes 👍🏼 this Riverdance performing by Ireland Dublin was stunning good 1994 a culture Irish chock to the rest of Europe people just because is it 100 % Irish Culture ❤👍🏼 i am a swede and me and my friends look at this on a Saturday evening 👍🏼👍🏼 And the monday when i was going to work ❤ So was people danzing Riverdance on the way to work ha ha ha ha 🤯 And i think the Swedish Brain on EUROVISION Contest change to much higher performance 👍🏼👍🏻🤯 After this good IRISH Eurovision Song Contest 1994 👍🏻🇸🇪❤️🇸🇪❤️👍🏻
It is a testament to the Irish ability to figure out how to dance, with only their lower half, so with the upper half, we could still hold our Pint. We no longer have to put our drinks down in order to go dance. 'Hallelujah'
You'd have to be there to see it. Seriously, it was the only thing you remember about the eurovision 1994. Ireland won that year as well. Amazing made irish dancing look sexy ❤
The Irish dance world basically didn't really differ from what it is today: you had Irish dance competitions all over the world, just like you had World Championships on an annual basis. I don't know about outside the US (and possibly Australia) but the US had a vast number of competitions and though I expect Europe to have a few as well, I can not believe they are as widespread as they are today. But the thing is that you wouldn't normally know about such competitions if you were not 'in to this world'. But basically, there already was a select group of top-level dancers that would win the important competitions and thus would have very little trouble getting to this level, in particular Jean Butler and Michael Flatley, who both already won basically everything they could have won, with Michael being the first American to win the World Championships. The only difference is the length of the performance: traditional Irish dances on competitions usually last something like 30 to 60 seconds, as endurance-wise, anything longer is hardly possible. Paired with the synchronised dancing which is far, far harder than I expected, (I started Irish dance when I was 23 and I'm still dancing now, age 35) is what makes this all the more spectacular to watch.
Thank you Georgia, it's prob. best to watch that video without pausing, pausing this particular video actually takes away from it, however I'm happy to see your reaction, it was great, thank you. Love from Ireland
Georgia , good commentary. The whole performance was based on the old traditional Irish Dance from Jean and the new style from Michael. Traditionally, Irish dancers were always taught to have their arms straight down by their sides. The transformation is in the show.
Georgia "The straight legs are very straight" SHE'IS GOLD!!! I'm supposed to be cleaning my bedroom and stopping to watch this. How about you and Gabby do a quick riverdance on your next video. Id pay $$$$ for that 🤣
A fascinating and very entertaining 👏 video beautiful 😍 ❤ Georgia. The singing by the soprano and the chior was magnificent. I was amazed at the beauty of her voice. The dancing 🕺 was brilliant. Fantastic energy and skill. I loved 😍 ♥ your comments - you deliver them with such wit and enthusiasm.
You should watch the entire Riverdance show and Lord of the Dance. I saw Riverdance at Radio City Musid Hall. I saw Lord of the Dance live. It took someone as good as Jean Butler to match Michael Flatley.
Hey Georgia, little info for you, might have been said already, but michael flatly had the world record for taps in 1 second, yes 1 second, it was 35 taps in 1 second, his feet were insured at one point for 56 million, great reaction as usual, your a star, love your content
I think pausing it and missing the huge crowd’s reaction at the end took away from it as this performance had a huge impact in Ireland. I was working in a very busy pub on the night and didn’t appreciate what was going on until the end when everybody in the packed pub jumped up and started clapping and cheering. Unreal. It was so big that, RTE, the state broadcaster, had to repeat the performance due to demand the next night.
makes me smile when i see your infectious smile, always a joy to see. video is very entertaining to watch. cool to see the way they can move like that, good choice.
I’ve seen the full show live three times over the years, it never gets old. A lot of people think it’s the same as tap, there are differences. Unlike Irish dancers, tappers tend to dance on the melody of a song rather than the downbeat, and while a tap dancer definitely uses their heels, they do not rely on them quite as heavily as Irish dancers do. Tappers also often dance solo; and Irish dancers more often dance in groups. Getting the synchronization with other dancers in your group correct is definitely one of the harder parts of step dancing. Tap is believed to have been born from a combination of step dancing and African American slaves dances.
Whether an Irish dancer more often dances in groups is slightly debatable: though you can dance in a group in school, this does not mean you interact with eachother: usually everyone dances for themselves (especially at competitions). Only ceili's (look up the word for pronounciation) (groupdances) are dances where dancers interact with eachother, the rest is all solo. The major difference is that a tap dancer uses the whole body, while an Irish dancer is not allowed to move the arms at all and they should be kept rigid, next to the torso, with clenched fists.
I really liked that the main frame was the subject and modesty a smaller box for yourself. As an Irish man, I have watched many reviews of Riverdance at Eurovision and to date, your one is the best.

Same! At home, even here in Dublin we were shocked, proud - just blown away!
Micheal Flatley became really famous for this and indeed Riverdance went on to perform hundreds of shows worldwide.
This video inspired me to add a splash of Bailey's to my coffee.

Little known fact: there were 59 marriages between company members.
Unfortunately their were also 59 divorces. You know yourself about show biz marriages, they never last.
