I have heard that there is not much correlation between grades and placement. How true is that

There is a correlation, at least among the top recruiters - grades and acads are one of the most important indicators for a person's ability to power through a curriculum. It is also important to note that participation in events, organizing events (extra curricular bracket) also amps up the chances at bagging a great offer.
