Random thoughts- get the little basket for your counter, and, if the clothes are not really soiled, some can go in the washer on gentle cycle!
If you can ever buy a front load washing machin and dryer, you will find it is much gentler on the clothes, at least in my experience. We bought an LG front load washer/dryer about 10 years ago, and it is so much easier on clothes than a top load washer/dryer.
